Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
Well, in the context of the EA game being "a thing" (regardless of what one thinks of the gameplay), I think 2k would have a really hard time selling yet another version on the same graphics engine.
This is why, even though I don't care for it, I'm happy the EA game exists.
I think that if EA had knocked it out of the park with this game it would have forced 2k to upgrade their engine. Since they did not it let 2k off the hook. I think Unity offers an upgraded game engine they might do something like that but they would never put themselves in the position of losing the course designer. Never.Comment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
Everything other than great new courses all the time is subpar in this game. Career is worse than bad and there is nothing else that brings me back to the game. In my case though that's all I want. Play a few rounds and I'm good.Comment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
I agree with ditching last gen. Hopefully that would improve the look of the game on current gen. Tell the truth if 25 or whenever they release the new game isn't a vast improvement over 23 I don't think I would buy it unless they made improvements in the designer that would allow creators more leeway with the planting meter and add more assets.Comment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
I don’t know much of anything about the technicalities of the Unity engine, so is there anyway for them to achieve true next gen graphics staying on Unity or have they completely reached the ceiling and that would only be achievable on a new engine?Comment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
Seems Unity can do some pretty decent "next-gen" landscapes...

This does look very nice. I think that 2k implementing more detailed background landscapes and a larger variety of grass and bunker types and textures would make a massive difference in the graphics alone. I think they already have a solid lighting system and the player models are decent, but there really needs to be a huge update to the landscapes, the courses on the EA game are just so much more detailed and I would love to see that from 2k as well.Comment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
My understanding is and I could be wrong is that HB/2k is not using the most updated version of the Unity engine.Comment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
The other thing is, they changed how the game played quite a bit between 2K21 and 2K23, especially with green speeds and how the golf ball reacts to the turf. So a lot of courses ported from 2K21 had to be adjusted quite a bit to actually play properly in 2K23. They also updated tree and landscape assets between the two games, and some of the new assets made the courses look quite a bit different and even caused issues with things like buried trees now sticking up out of the ground.
All this to say that I think it might not be a bad idea for HB to go ahead and go all "next gen" in 2K25/6 and fully upgrade to a newer version of the Unity engine (if they stay with Unity). Worst case scenario is that they untether the new game from courses in the previous games, which now look kind of repetitive and dated from using the same assets and themes for almost a decade, and kick things up a notch with new fresh assets, themes, backdrops, and more.Last edited by MrArlingtonBeach; 02-09-2024, 11:39 AM.Orbis Non SuficitComment

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
I feel like this is probably the case. I also think it's because 2K23 was still on last-gen consoles. It makes sense why the games were still on PS4 and Xbox One, but we might be getting to the point where last-gen could be left behind.

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions
Even though it would be unfortunate to have to throw out all the courses everyone has made over the past 10 years in order to move to a new or updated engine, I definitely think it would be worth it. We’re four years into this new console generation it’s time they give the users next gen tools to create better courses that we can use for the next 5-10 years or soComment
