    Sure, I guess

But how do they get growth?

I have to think anyone and everyone possibly interested at all has given the 2k game a try by now

2K has to approach this from a perspective of "how do we get growth here" and unlike their last release, they are competing against EA and their better visuals (I'd say that's a fair and general consensus re: visuals)

    I'm one example player...so an "n of 1", but let's use me..

I will never play another 2k golf game again until we get better visuals. That's just where I'm at as a customer in 2024 and beyond.

    I'm not alone.

You certainly are not alone. I would like to see better graphics. If EA had done a good job with their game it would have forced 2k to get a new engine. EA failed so 2k gets a pass in the short term. That's my opinion. My question is is the golf genre large enough to warrant the expense on the part of 2k. They don't even think the football space is worth it.

You bring up a very very valid point

Also, with the ambiguity around PGA and LIV right now -- I honestly don't expect EA or 2K to do any new major releases anytime soon. If one were setting out to make a new golf game version, it's honestly hard to know what audience exactly to try to target -- especially when the mess of licensing comes into play.

I don't think that'll be forever, but I see both of them keeping their Dev wallets in their pockets for now.

          Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions

2K shelled out what I'd imagine was a fairly large amount of money to get the rights to slap Tiger's face on the box and have him playable in the game, not to mention playable non-golfer characters like John Cena, the Dude Perfect guys, Gareth Bale, etc. Plus, they bought HB Studios themselves and moved them in-house.

Since they seem to have money to add these kinds of things, I'd find it hard to believe they couldn't upgrade to a newer version of Unity.

I think the part about screwing up their shiny new toy is the more likely concern.

My concern is that they'd be apprehensive about more spending ... they've already done a lot of it .. and it's unclear (no way to know) what they think about the returns on it to this point

I still can't believe the 2k commentary about growth and sales numbers from that pandemic anomaly time period. Surely that was just spin and they didn't really think that once in a lifetime (hopefully) strange situation was going to be indicative of the future growth and market size for golf games?

EA has that license exclusively locked up

Not to get too sidetracked... but EA has the exclusive simulation rights. There's actually a 2K arcade NFL game in development, but it's taking its sweet time getting completed: https://insider-gaming.com/what-is-g...e-nfl-2k-game/

Can you clear up for us what the legal distinction is between Simulation and Arcade in this context?

                  That link doesn't cover that

More info/thoughts here, although there's really no cut-and-dry distinction:

"There are entire academic papers attempting to map out the spectrum between "abstraction" and "transformation" in virtual sports, but there's still no one agreed-upon point where a game tips over from "simulation" to "non-simulation."

It'd be interesting to know, legally, what would decide arcade vs simulation if 2k or anyone else tried to test it out.

I'm sure EA has a defined explanation in their contract with the NFL

I have no idea what the total EA game sales are, but if they did poorly with Augusta and the other 3 Majors, 30 courses and counting on Frostbite... it's not looking good for 2K to start coding from scratch with a new engine.

Money. As far as American Football goes I don't like EA's offering but it seems the younger crowd at least tolerates it. I would be fine with a graphical update of APF2k8 but no franchise is death. Do turbo boosts and QB power ups constitute a sim game.

Getting back to the point I think 2k wasted their money paying Woods and the other names in the game but I am in the minority. Besides getting a new engine up and running with similar gameplay and a course creator can't be cheap. Remember this is the company that won't pay to even mo cap a decent Canadian local club champ.

I agree with much of this. I think getting TW was quite a coup, considering EA was gearing up to develop a game of their own. A little bit of a middle finger to them.

But getting the rights to all those other non-golfer playable characters? Yeah, that was an absolute waste.

HB has a track record of being cheap, no doubt. But they are now financially backed by 2K - they aren't indie devs any more. And you can see the money being injected into the last game with all those playable characters, more courses (courses like Pebble Beach and Pinehurst No. 2 probably have high costs attached to them), lots more brands of gear, etc.

I'd just like to see that money, especially the money used to get rights to people from entities like Barstool and "100 Thieves", put into improving the quality of the game and how it looks, bringing it more up to date in a lot of ways.

Odd request here, does anyone know where to buy a legit PC version of this game super cheap? I've been playing the EA game on Playstation the past few months, but my wife has been in the hospital for 2 months now, and I was hoping to find a super cheap PC version of this 2k game and hope it runs on my laptop when I'm in the room with her while she's sleeping. I'm with her day and night and it would help kill some time.

I have a pretty killer laptop, but it wouldn't run the EA game at all, it just kept crashing on startup (the Steam version). I'm willing to risk maybe $20 bucks to see if I can get this one or even 2k21 to run on it. I searched google for a deal on it but all of the sites that came up with low prices look like BS pirate sites.

Also, any other golf game for PC that's decent that works with a gamepad, I'm open to suggestions. I don't like using the keyboard or a mouse for golf games.

Thanks for anything you guys can point me to.

CDKeys and G2A are fine to buy games off of. Never had a problem with them. I wouldn't worry about it. They have it for $14-16.
