I know, I still have my serious doubts, because ALL week they said that bg downloading would have limitations and that you cannot download in-game. Now they say you can, but only in their European press release, not the American one. They need to confirm something, but chances are they won't say a word and we will just have to find out ourselves when the firmware is released.

A slight clarification. 1up was also saying in another piece that Sony's initial plan was to do rollout phase one for BG downloading that allowed you to perform BG downloading while being tied to the XMB and listening to music, videos etc. Phase two would allow you to do BG downloading while playing games.

It appears since Europe is getting it with the release of the PS3, they may have decided to do the same here. We'll find out tomorrow.

the beta isn't up until August.... at least that is what I thought. Also, don't you have to sign up to be part of the beta trial?


And if someone knows where to sign up for the trial could you please pass the link. Thanks in advance.

if they don't start adding some decent demos to download.... background downloading isn't going to do a thing for me. At least til they release another online game only that I can't live without.

I believe a 15,000 limit beta trial will be launched in April. Than a 50,000 in August and finally in fall it will be released.

I just finished the download of version 1.60.

I did not see a beta trial for home. The folding@home experiment or what have you is up and running. There are no new demos or trailers or downloadable games in the store... maybe later today that will update. I thought that GRAW2 was supposed to have a demo out today for the PS3 but maybe I am wrong.


And now... drumroll please.... WE HAVE BACKGROUND DOWNLOADING! and yes.... yes.... IT WORKS WHILE YOU ARE PLAYING A GAME FROM A DISK!!!! (pauses for crowd cheers). When you go to download an item it gives you the option to put it in background downloading. Then you can do whatever else that you want to do and check back on the downloading progress by going under the Network tab and scrolling down to Download Management which shows you what you are downloading and at what percentage it has completed. I am very excited to see this, but now just need some downloads to use this with.

Haven't checked what other, if any, new things are also included with this latest update.

Cool news, now I won't mind the 5 1/2 hours it takes to download a 45 MB file

Being able to do it while I watch a movie will be cool.

They've also added an autostart/auto load feature just like on the 360 which is about time.
