      Scrap Metal Announced For XBLA

      Gamerbytes

Slick Entertainment, the development team behind N+ for the Xbox Live Arcade, have announced their newest title Scrap Metal for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Scrap Metal is in essence Super Off Road but with guns - or more specifically the old Apogee game Death Rally, which can only be a good thing.

This two man team (two people? crazy...) are hard at work on this game right now, and will be showing off the game at the Penny Arcade Expo at booth #3106, so if you're going next weekend give the game a look.

1UP: The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom Preview

With a black-and-white, silent-film aesthetic (including tinkling piano music and the appropriate film grain), The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom brims with humor and style. And it has an objective of which I truly approve: collecting pie. What started as a student thesis flash game that a group of students (now known as The Odd Gentlemen) submitted to the Independent Games Festival during Game Developers Conference 2008 has now become a full-fledged, honest-to-goodness Xbox Live downloadable game. Backed by 2K and set to release in early 2010, this 2D platform/puzzle title takes a time-manipulating concept, which involves creating time-looped clones to reach each stage's goal, and packages it all in a whimsical world Charlie Chaplin would find familiar.

The titular, top-hatted P.B. Winterbottom is a straightforward fellow, with only one thing on his mind: catching up with the elusive, and quite mischievous, Chronoberry Pie. It's a giant pastry that floats menacingly in the sky, ever-watchful, as Winterbottom wanders through the game's different worlds, each of which introduces its own time-manipulating mechanic. For instance, in the Clock Tower world, Winterbottom needs to collect a set number of pies strategically placed in each level -- the catch is that these pies are out of phase, so he'll have to step on a trigger to make them corporeal, and thus obtainable. This is a timed trigger, however, so he'll have to figure out a way to get all the pies at once before they disappear again, meaning he needs to be in more than one place at a time.

The controls are simple -- the left analog stick moves Winterbottom around, one button makes him jump, and the other button makes him smack things with his umbrella (which he can also use to slowly float down from high places). It's the cloning process that brings out the game's complexity and creative freedom. While you hold down RT, you are able to record every action you perform -- when you let go of RT, Winterbottom's clone performs your recording on an infinite loop. The clones and Winterbottom can all interact with one another, so you're able to build large complex, reactionary machines in order to obtain your pie-goals. You can use your umbrella to smack a clone across the screen, or use a clone to launch you on a seesaw. You can also stack clones on top of one another to build floating platforms. To make things a bit trickier, each stage has a cap on the number of clones you can have on-screen at once, so you really have to use some creative thinking.

Obviously, on a very basic level, it's easy to compare Winterbottom to Braid, another Xbox Live downloadable title that used time manipulation to solve platforming puzzles. But the wonderful thing about Winterbottom, besides its terrific art and music, is that the game is open to multiple solutions. The designer built the stages in such a way that you can use the mechanics any way you wish -- you aren't locked into figuring out that "one magical solution." Like Winterbottom's need for that special taste of pie, I'm eagerly waiting for this game to scratch that time-manipulating, platform-puzzling itch.

Re: Xbox Live Marketplace and Live Arcade discussion Part III

              sega sucks.

Not only do they celebrate 9/9/09 (the dreamcast release day) with a XBLA release of Sonic and Knuckles, but...

Sonic & Knuckles — sequel/counterpart to Sonic 3 for SEGA Genesis — is due out this September 9th for XBox Live Arcade. The best news? The game will emulate the “lock-on” technology available in the original. This means that it will work with previous XBLA releases of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3.

Here’s how it works: If you have any of the previous XBLA Sonic games (1, 2, or 3) , Sonic and Knuckles will detect this and unlock additional options for play. Here’s what you can get:

Sonic the Hedgehog: Unlocks the game “Blue Sphere”, the bonus/Chaos Emerald level from Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Lets you play as Knuckles, complete with the ability to get to previously inaccessible areas of the game, and new power-ups added for playingas Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Play as Knuckles in Sonic 3, and also changes the flow of the game and connects it directly to Sonic & Knuckles, so that you can play the two seamlessly!
They left this ability off of the Ultimate Genesis collection they only released in February.

                  PAX 09: Comic Jumper Revealed

Twisted Pixel, the crazy group behind the XBLA hits 'Splosion Man and The Maw, has revealed its next project. Judging by the trailer, this one looks to be inspired by the classic SEGA game, Comix Zone. It goes by the name of Comic Jumper, and it stars a pinheaded hero that has a grumpy star-shaped character stuck on his chest. In traditional super-hero fashion, this hero and his side-kick have a bit of a love-hate relationship.

Sound weird? Well, watch the trailer for yourself and you'll see what we're talking about.

Based on the trailer, Comic Jumper is going to be an action-side scroller that allows players to jump into various comic books to take part in and alter their stories. Different comic books will have different art styles, which will alter the appearance of the main character. Also, there will be jokes.

The latest episode of Gametrailers TV has lifted the lid on a new, original game from LucasArts' internal studios called Lucidity. The game will be released on Xbox Live Arcade "later this month".

A PC version of Lucidity has previously been rumoured, but no mention was made of it in the Gametrailers show.

Lucidity is a 2D, side-scrolling "puzzle platform game" with in which the heroine, a young girl called Sophie, moves of her own accord and the player places pieces in front of her to create safe passage through an abstract dream-world. It will have 30 levels in its main story, and 15 unlockable bonus levels.

"We're super-inspired by games like Braid, or any of the games that are coming out there in the indie scene," said project lead David Nottingham. The art style was influenced by the cut-paper look of children's pop-up books and classical hand-drawn feature animation, he said.
