Like I said earlier, I'll have an issue with the Kinect if I get a XBox One because all my living room entertainment equipment is across the room from my TV in a closet, so connecting the Kinect will be an issue. I'm hoping that I can just hook up the Kinect but leave it in the closet. I don't care to use any of its functions anyway, so who cares if it can't see or hear me. Hopefully the XBox will still function that way.

It's there for the purpose of programming. Having it mandatory allows developers to develop for it if they choose to. I understand people's frustration with their ability to choose what they "Want" and "Don't Want"

I just think Microsoft is trying to take the technology to the next level. Both within gaming & in other area's of Home entertainment

That's a valid concern I didn't even think of. You have many probabilities that can go wrong that could knock out the system. Take your cable box or DTV system. If cable is out does X1 even work?

In this instance, yes the kinect will function without your cable box, but the tv options won't be available. The xbox one is like a receiver in this instance and doesn't rely on your cable box for anything other than audio and video input. Think of the xbox one and kinect as a wireless tv remote.

I'm still not following how that makes sense though. Were devs not able to develop for the Kinect if they wanted to previously? 2K managed to develop for it without it being a mandatory piece of my 360.

MS has been very scattered and vague with their explanations. I'm wondering if that quote means the Kinect itself, in order to function, has to be connected to the Xbox One.
Still, if a company is striving to reach a goal, with the Xbox this would be an all in one console, they do have to do what they feel works best. What they are saying now is that gaming is part of the Xbox experience, not the core. Overall entertainment is now at the core.

They dont need to explain it to you. The reasons are OBVIOUS...they want to constantly watch/listen and monitor you. This will give them unlimited and updated data on every gamer/household an XBone sits inside. The reasons for this are only limited by the imagination of their marketing team.
For instance, you play alot of Call of Duty, and u arent particularly healthy or "in shape" so as u are playing its detecting your heart rate (by the change in hue in ur face color) and reading that your heart rate is much higher than it should.
So now they can use that data to send you prompts for kinect excercise games etc. now this example is only the tip of the iceberg. U can let ur imagination do the rest relative to nefarious ways any info can be shared or SURRENDERED to whatever entity decides they "Need" all the conversations and biometric camera data that ur Xbone or microsofts Cloud has stored.
This is what cracks me up...the vast difference in philosophies regarding us Americans and the Japanese. If Sony had all these requirements in their hardware, Im willing to bet they would crash and burn in their own country.
But so may here are willing to completely open up themselves, thier families and ther homes to a gaming system no less, just to play a video game...Ridiculous.

No it means the xbox one console won't function without the kinect attacthed to the console...I've been all over and the quotes are the same. Think about it, they could have two different consoles one with and one without like the 360, but they don't. The only thing the have is the one console and to ease the conversion a consignment plan that you can pay as you go for the console and live (rumor). No we don't know all of the facts but the fact that the quote was made and not retracted speaks volumes...Larry Herb did knock down the always on flop so why wouldn't they clean up this little misconception if that's what it is.

You all are on point about the Kinect thing as it is my major issue now with this console. Major privacy questions with it. One other that is a concern is the reliability of the console itself. I went thru 6 360s and 2 of them the new type, so I have to question it for the new ONE as well, especially if this thing is rushed out to meet a Holiday deadline.

The Internet thing doesn't bother me, my XBOX is always connected to Live and even when I'm playing games alone I'm in a party with friends shooting the breeze.

The HDD bit kind of sucks, but I've been using a 60 GB HDD for years now and I'm nowhere near full.

The only thing that really stings is the secondary games issue. I don't borrow games much from friends, but I do buy pre-owned quite a bit and that will really hurt. However, if they can drive down the cost of initial purchase of a new game with this system, I'll be fine with that. 60$ for some games is too much, but I'm a player at the 40$ range.

Hmm, let me see....

I was in the military for quite some time and have been deployed several times. Unless you are stationed in war zones such as Afghanistan or Iraq, then soldiers do in fact have internet access. I was part of the initial surge into Iraq and AT&T, Yahoo, and MSFT donated equipment enough to get soliders online what little opportunity they could via Yahoo Chat back in 03-04.

Right now even remote FOB, PB, and Camps inside of Iraq and Afghan do in fact have internet access in the recreation areas. Maybe there isnt a wired connection in each quansa hut, but there is internet access.

Sure, not every soldier will have internet at every post and every camp in every warzone, but the amount of soliders that are actually in places like this is very minor even compared to the number of deployed soliders currently.

You're not going to last much longer, just stop. Just so you know, my friend just got back from overseas. They had internet for a couple hours a day. I would just quit while you're not ahead, (maybe)? lol

I'm going to force abbreviating this console the 'X1'. Hopefully it catches on, and it's notably shorter than "Xbone." Seriously, "Ex-Bone"?

The Kinect thing might be something of a security fail-safe. Many hackers these days are attacking and crippling systems that they're not even in front of; the Kinect might be a way of figuring out if someone is in the room at the time an Xbox Live transaction is being made or account info is being changed, etc. Then there's the creepier option that CCB stated...

I personally like the design look, but I've thrown myself out as an Xbox fan a little bit since the 360. There are things that I liked about it, but I just loved PlayStation too much to say I could enjoy it. Given my PS library, I must compel myself to go straight to PS4 without hesitation.

Of course, there will still be hesitation, since I won't buy one of these guys for a while.

This isn't how people are hacking live accounts. They do it through doxing and social engineering. The kinect is not a anti theft device...that's just silly (sorry).

But the entire install base of Xbox 360's cannot be assumed to have Kinect. When you require it for the console (like requiring a Hard Drive) it allows the devs to know 100% that it'll be there.

I understand the frustration, but with peripherals like Kinect or Move they have to guarantee it'll be there to make it worthwhile for everyone.

I personally find Kinect way more useful than Move, I never really understood or liked Sony's motion technology, and didn't seem like any games used it either. That's a side note I just thought about as I was typing this.

Kind of expecting the PS4's version of kinect to be required too, it just can't do as much so less concern about it.

Would seem strange for it to not be required when they are putting a move sensor on every controller, being able to mandate it available for every title will either lead to people getting it out for some games (not required to have connected all the time) or it actually needing to be plugged in all the time.

Either way, is there anything about that re: PS4?

In the end, this is MS's vision, if you don't buy into it just yet because there's only so much concrete information and a mountain of FUD, that's OK.
