Re: Xbox One
There are still a lot of things to be worked out. People will overreact, but the reality is this:
1. The Xbox can't be used for longer than 24 hours without checking in. That is DRM.
2. The PS4 for single player games can be played offline indefinitely.
3. The door is still open for Sony to allow DRM (like online passes and the like) on a per-game basis. That is DRM as well, but I think generally people accept this as a reasonable trade-off, especially since the core disc can be resold/traded/etc.
4. The Xbox (unless they backtrack) has restrictions on core disc re-sale/trades/etc to one other person/retail entity, etc. That is DRM.

Essentially Sony "leaving the door open" is leaving pubs with the same options that they have on PS3 (online pass or creating their own DRM stuff like PC).
MS has made it super easy for pubs to just "turn this on" and require a fee.
Look at Ubisoft's DRM Uplay, it's pretty terrible and they've had issues on PC developing it and not having it crash. Every publisher isn't going to be able to have a good DRM solution if they have to make it. It's a huge investment.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Xbox One
Well put Natural, that pretty much sums it up. The inability to play single player for no longer than 24 hours without logging in, would send shivers down my spine.
Games may be all about multiplayer now, but I couldn't imagine gaming without single player.Comment

Re: Xbox One
Microsoft is investing a lot of money into implementing it console-wide because they think it will be profitable for them on that large scale.
It may be cost-prohibitive for ONE developer or publisher to implement that strict of a DRM on their own, and it may in fact not be profitable at all on this smaller scale.Comment

Re: Xbox One
It's interesting to me that it was MS who actually did it. Sony pushed so hard to make PS3 a Media Center while MS stayed true to the gamer with the 360 being much more focused on being a pure gaming console. If I would've guessed earlier this year on which of the two developers was placing this into their console, I sadly would have guessed Sony. It's surprising to me that it was MS and I do feel a bit for those who have been strictly X-Box over the years.

Re: Xbox One
You will still be able to use your PS4 offline without logging in. The game may require that you play online but it wouldn't be the first game on the Playstation do that (MAG). And you would still be able to trade the game in to Gamestop and etc. At the end of the day, it is a PS4 game. And the PS4 allows you to trade, resell and buy used games.Comment

Re: Xbox One
That publisher could say, even for this single player game, you have to "log in to our online pass first", essentially disabling the folks that have their PS4 off the network. But that exists today in 360 and PS3 land. The point is, Microsoft requires you to phone home, PS4 disc DRM does not.
One thing that maybe someone else might've caught, can you play the PS4 games entirely off the hard drive? Or does it still need to be in to play?Arsenal FC

Re: Xbox One
I think it will depend on how you purchase the game. If it's disc based, you'll probably still need the disc. If not, I would think they would have gone over that in the Conference. But you can always buy the game digitally and download it straight to your system without the need for a disc.Comment
