    Re: Xbox One

It wasn't just the messaging though. It was what they wanted to do.

    - Always online and then changed to 24 hour check in (negative)
    - No discs / digital only (negative)
    - Because of the above, no used games, no swapping, reselling, etc. (negative)
    - Kinect bundled in and forced (negative)
    - $500 price tag, $100 more than the competition (negative)

Sorry but none of the above was innovative at all. If anything, it's going backwards for one main reason - they were eliminating the choice/option to do what YOU (consumer) wants to do and instead, force what they (Microsoft) wanted to do.

You simply can't do that. Majority of gamers and consumers are not going to accept that. Plus, they did it two generations too early. A lot of areas in NA don't have a good internet connection so not only are you forcing stuff, you're also limiting your consumer base.

The media stuff is fine as a secondary focus and there for those who like all that stuff. However, that shouldn't have been focused on any of that and just focus on their games. In fairness though, Sony did the same thing at E3 2014 if I remember correctly. For me, the media stuff wasn't what turned me off. It was the required stuff I listed above.

As someone who preferred Xbox 360 over PlayStation 3, I didn't know which console I was getting first. Both were tied going into E3 2013. Like the majority of gamers, including those who were loyal to Microsoft during Xbox 360, the decisions they were implementing basically made my decision for me.

The Kinect stuff is great for those who use it and/or care about it. For those who don't, it's just a useless peripheral that costs an extra $100. The extra $100 could go towards games or an extra controller or Xbox Live Gold. The rest were just horrible decisions in general. Instead of building on what they built with Xbox 360, Microsoft was trying to change it all and majority of gamers/consumers weren't going to accept it.

Microsoft was arrogant, cocky and full of themselves just like Sony was when they introduced and launched PlayStation 3. It's almost like they take turns screwing up with each generation.

As for now, Microsoft should just stay the course. Phil Spencer has done an amazing job over the last two years and no reason to take a chance hurting the momentum that they have now. Xbox One is outselling Xbox 360 in the same time frame and they should just go the course and ride it out until their next console.

Just my own opinion though. One thing is for sure - E3 2016 will be very interesting. Less than two months to go!!!

There's too much for me to respond to in your post, or maybe even get in trouble with, but let me tell you an interesting story.

Sony was planning on selling PS4 at $500 bundled with the PS Eye camera. They saw our E3 briefing in the AM, cut that, announced it at $400, and destroyed us in other ways. Good business by them. They were all-in on the eye and those stupid wands too, but they had the business sense to make them optional.

My former boss knew so many people in the industry and was at E3, so he got a bunch of this info firsthand.

Just a few corrections on that list...

The always online/24 hour check was because of disks, to eliminate the need to have the disk in to play. So yes there would have been disks. And there would have been trade in at select retailers that would be authorized to recover/resell the license for that disk. And digital game/family sharing.

Like you said great business idea by Sony. I bet 99% of us would do the same thing if we were in that situation as Sony. I know I would.

I already know about the PS4/Camera bundle and that they changed it. Of course, if Xbox One didn't have Kinect bundled in and released at $400, Sony Would have done the exact same thing anyway. Very smart decision by Sony and just a dumb decision by Microsoft to bundle in Kinect. That should have been optional from the start. Knowing PS4 was going to be a $500 bundle, your boss should have removed Kinect and lower the console to $400.

And yeah, Microsoft always being first on the Monday of E3 to have a press conference doesn't help either.

Sorry. I was wrong on the all digital part but none of the above is any better. All of the above sounds like it would have been more complicated and more of a hassle than anything. And not a fan of Microsoft or Sony being the ones that give me credit for my games. Seriously, what will they give me? 10%? $6 for a $60 game? No thanks. Best Buy and even GameStop gives more amazingly.

They said they weren't going to set pricing, just provide a way to manage licensing (Azure services integrated into POS systems at participating retailers, presumably).

This would have allowed any disc to have all the advantages of a digital copy, and then when traded in or given to a friend the the license could be unregistered from your account.

I would have been very interested in seeing what that system would have looked like after it's been iterated on for a few years. I expect the next generation both consoles will have some hybrid of this approach.

All I know is that my xbox white model is sweet looking and it is worth the money to play just one game NBA 2K16

The SimWorld rosters are worth the money alone. I tried to start a season on PS4 with default rosters as there are no good custom ones and it was horrible

I plugged in SIMWORLD and the game plays different and smarter. It is that good. I put their roster over any other roster I ever tried in any sports game.

Exactly. Plus games now require online (Destiny, The Division, etc) and you don't hear everyone complain about that.

It's the future, MS just didn't sell it correctly and Sony capitalized.

I'm just really glad he's around to tell us, and our bosses, what we should and shouldn't do. I was lost before.

Frankly I was super happy with my One. The controller itself is reason for me to play the system. I love that controller. Those sticks, man. I no longer have it but plan on buying whatever the next version is (Slim, upgraded, whatever). I had to sell it out of need, not because I wanted to. I feel like, in my humble opinion, MS has recovered from a bit of a rocky start and seems to be doing fine now.

I don't claim to be a gaming expert and fully admit there are many things I don't know, these are just my opinions. I feel Microsoft tried to do things their way, it backfired a bit, they adjusted and moved forward. I feel the Win10/Xbox 1 cross play/integration is great

I'm really hoping the Win10 apps on Xbox hit huge....that could make it the ultimate streaming box, since if companies make apps on Win10 they can get a bunch of people that also use it on Xbox.

If MS would give me $55 or whatever the number is back if I sell it back to them within weeks of release then I would be all for it. And discounts for buying new games like BB and Amazon Prime. But where I don't have that option I would much rather have discs and have to put it in the system.
