Re: Both PS4 and XBOX3 to be shown at E3
Am I the only one that wouldn't be surprised if PS3 just stuck with what they have for the next generation? I mean...
1. the console itself ISN'T where companies make their profit--it's the games that do that.
2. Assuming that the rumors of Xbox720 having a blu-ray disc are true, PS3 wouldn't be that far behind hardware-wise. It could probably do to add some peripherals, but I don't think the difference in hardware will be THAT drastic.
Those things being said, the current generation is definitely my last on console. I think it's time for me to be a big boy and switch to PC. Upgradable hardware just sounds like a huge advantage to me, especially once companies figure out a way to cut down piracy and start bringing their games back to PC.Texans - Cougars - Astros - Rockets - Dynamo - Chelsea - LightningComment

Yes, you would be the only one. Just having a blu-ray player doesn't knock the next Xbox back a gen, nor does it make the PS3 worth keeping around several more years as your primary platform.Am I the only one that wouldn't be surprised if PS3 just stuck with what they have for the next generation? I think you then contradict yourself by saying you're probably going PC, which is currently being hamstrung by console development on relatively archaic hardware a number of PC graphics card generations old and with a nearly inferior amount of RAM.

Re: Both PS4 and XBOX3 to be shown at E3
How is PC being hamstrung by the consoles? Not all PC titles are ports from console products, so the PC is at the much bigger advantage from both the hardware perspective, the resolution achieved (which these new consoles are touting), graphic fidelity, PC exclusives, RTS's, MMOs, and lastly the ability to swap a part out if something goes out rather than send end entire system. Pay 100+ to have it repaired with same part.Yes, you would be the only one. If anything I see PC's making a return. Isn't the current consoles just a dedicated PC for gaming? Now with the technology finally coming to PC where ease of adding parts for less PC savoy people is here and Console controllers or keyboard mouse as options further closes gap.
I think the only "flaw" in the PC gaming structure is the massive amount of different possible hardware configurations. The ONLY area consoles have the upper hand is developing for one single structure and making it work to the best of that ability. If PC gaming can figure out a solution to this issue then I see zero point for a consoles.
In all honesty PS3 is a old outdated gaming computer. Archaic front end/ web browser, games being installed to HD, downloading patches which must be unzipped and THEN installed. This is all functions we are used to seeing from PC's. Now a PC that playing games straight off the disc like 360 is a winner, but honestly digital playing off HD is still faster and easier (Steam for example).
All in all people have always talked about consoles taking PC's out the equation, I don't see that happening.Comment

Re: Both PS4 and XBOX3 to be shown at E3
Texture resolution. Games made for consoles aren't exactly coming with gigs of additional textures, and even other parts of games are made for consoles and simply ported over to PCs. The audience in NBA2k is a good example of this... thankfully in 2k12 they dumped the 'here's the view from the corner of the stadium... don't look at the 2D crowd (everyone past row ~8)'. This isn't even a texture problem, as it's probably an engine limitation and they have no motivation to fix because they're apparently content porting it from consoles.
Games are made for hardware that's several years old at this point, why improve them so that you eliminate more potential PC customers? As a result consoles will be the lowest common denominator for the foreseeable future, and for many games (there are exceptions) PC hardware is just adding more power to the equation, leveraging some systems that scale with the power, while pushing more FPS and little more.
There are exceptions, but that's what I mean with consoles handicapping PCs. I'm not going to get into the consoles eliminating PCs or vice versa stuff, as I think both will be healthy industries for a long time.Comment

Re: Both PS4 and XBOX3 to be shown at E3
I can see PC gaming making a surge. If I have to put up with the same awful DRM the PC has, can no longer share/rent/buy used games, and have to pay for online play, I might as well go to the PC. That's not even considering the sales Steam has, which I doubt will happen on consoles due to the different business model. If anything I see PC's making a return. Re: Both PS4 and XBOX3 to be shown at E3
Yea but the amount of console ports to PC is relatively small compared to the amount designed separately for PC and specifically for PC.Texture resolution. So while I agree with you that textures and graphic fidelity might suffer on pure ports. While FPS and resolution differences playing more of a role in the PC equation of those titles. I think the number of titles under this mantra is pretty low. You have much more developers looking to really push what the PC hardware is capable of. Plus with the "next-gen" consoles emerging ever so closer, these "texture" limitations will be less noticeable until the PC puts a large gap between them again in 5 years or so after those consoles release.
With that said I don't believe PC's most recognizable advantage is graphics. I believe their advantage lies in Free online play, More exclusives(StarCraft, Diablo 3, ARMA 3, DOTA 2, Guild wars2, Planet Side, Totalwar Shogun, WOW, World of Planes, to name a few), greater control from controllers, keyboard/mice, joysticks, rudders, etc, swappable hardware (if hardware fails), price of games being more reasonable, and lastly being able to do everything a console can do but better. The graphics is one nice perk, but is not the one reason people will switch to PC.Last edited by Phobia; 04-03-2012, 12:17 PM.Comment

Re: Both PS4 and XBOX3 to be shown at E3
PCs still don't have near the plethora of quality first party titles that the PS3 or Xbox do (that people actually care about), nor the 3rd party support. Until that happens, consoles will continue to dominate the gaming market. That said, it won't happen. Our opinions become skewed because we hang out on OS and talk with other people who care as much as we do. The general public wants to go buy a platform that they can hook to a tv and play games on. Doing that with a PC may very well be "easier" now, but it's still not as easy as using a console. And again, there just aren't any games outside of te occasional port, and again, most people dont have the specs at home to play them at their visual best anyway in this world of laptops and iPads.Last edited by DickDalewood; 04-03-2012, 12:20 PM.Comment

Completely disagree. There is way more exclusives on the PC side than there is on the console side. Most consoles games are also on PC, where the PC holds far more exclusives that the console will not ever see.PCs still don't have near the plethora of quality first party titles that the PS3 or Xbox do, nor the 3rd party support. Now you are correct about the "ease of use", to a degree. It is much easier for a 12 year old kid to hook up his xbox 360 and play. But as far as turning a PC on, starting a game, and playing it is no harder on a PC. I understand the mindset people have towards PC's and gaming, but much of the old school mentality is skewed info on the subject.
For instance I could name 3 franchises by themselves that are larger than almost any console audience (call of duty being closest). Starcraft has a HUGE world wide audience and ranks one of the most played games ever. World of Warcraft is another PC exclusive that pulls in larger amounts of players. Lastly DOTA is the largest game played in the world, with numbers estimated in the 15 to 20 million players world wide.
PC is very much still at the forefront of exclusives and large large amount of people play them. PC's will still give consoles a run for their money in the "players amount" range.Comment

I agree with the fanbase of the few you meantioned, but in regards to popular/noteable exclusives, there is no way there are more on PC:
Mario
Uncharted
Gears of War
The Show
Killzone
Hot Shots
God of War
Zelda
Etc, etc, etc
Again, outside of WoW or Starcraft, your average consumer doesn't know the popular PC titles outside of those that are also on consoles. Hell, just go into any chain retailer (ie, Best Buy), and take a walk down the PC aisle... if they even have one depending on the store.
And, as I said, while upgrading PCs may certainly be easier than it used to be, people still a) don't know how to do it and b) don't want to waste the time. Most people get computers for casual use and portability, hence the increase in laptop and tablet sales. And, when they decide they want to play games on their TV, they grab a console that is easy to hookup and does just that; plays games.
I'm not saying that PCs or PC gaming are irrelevent... far from it. What I'm saying is they aren't mainstream, and won't be that way anytime soon.Comment

I agree they are not main stream, any longer. But I think that could change in future.More? Really?

Now as far as exclusive, let me just show you.
Company of Heroes
World of Warcraft
ARMA 3
Starcraft 2
Age of Empires
Sins of Solar empire
Total war series
BlackLight Retribution
Diablo 3
DOTA series
Planetside 2
Titan quest series
The Witcher 2
Starwars Old Republic
Heros Might and Magic 6
End of nations
The Sims
Stronghold 3
League of Legends
Firefall
Tera
Red Orchestra
This is just some of the more known ones. There are dozens of smaller exclusives that are kind of like a "braid" size & style.
The only area where consoles take PCs in terms of exclusives is sports. Shooters to action games almost all transfer over to PC. Such as Batman Arkham city to COD MW3 to BF3. But across the board PC's hold far more exclusives. The reason being is developing on the PC from a small studio to a major one is easier (from resources needed to obtaining engines). This is why minecraft launched on the PC.
I do agree with you though Dale, PC is not mainstream any longer. Not how it was when many of us first got into gaming when Warcraft, Commander and Conquer, Doom, and Wolf 3d were all taking off and creating the "gaming" era. Now consoles are more common but the lines between PC's and consoles are closing as we go forward.
Oh and this looks pretty cool for a free to play MMO, still not as good as Guildwars 2 but still different.

Wait a minute. You're telling me that I can't play if I'm offline? So what if somebody hacks XBOX Live like they did PSN last year? We wouldn't be able to play for a month while they try and get their **** together?Originally posted by slickdtcI'd ride his bus, that's all I'm saying.
