That sums it up form me. There have been countless times this generation where a new feature is touted and followed with..."Ohh wait..it doesn't work..."
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

Plenty of people have before and will again. Heck you have people in the Vita thread spending $400-$500+ for a handheld.

Initial success will be dictated by launch titles and the features of the systems. MS will surely bring Kinect 2 to the table, will Sony abandon Move (maybe the question is have they already)? I am expecting Sony to go with a system that is pretty close to break even if not profitable from launch (but still at the $499+ price point) but that could cause it to be underpowered vs a more agressive Microsoft strategy.

I didn't buy a 360 or PS3, when they first released. I was still in high school and it was out of the question to ask for something that big for Christmas.

I did end up with one by my senior year, though. I saved up and purchased it myself. I'm a little better off financially now and there's a chance I may be willing to spend some money this time around.

          We'll see..

I agree I mainly play sports games and if Madden has a rough transfer to this gen like it did to PS3 and 360 there is no way I am buying this.

I skip the first launch version of sports games as they have sucked, most 3rd party games do also. The only way I buy it any time near launch is if there is a 1st party game that I want to play right away.

                  I will be getting a PS4

I don't know if i will be getting the next xbox3 tho.... it just seems to much focus on Kinect and well i just don't see any exclusives that i would LOVE to play on the Xbox other then Halo (just doesn't justify the console purchase) I will still leave the door open tho incase MS all of a sudden decides to focus on new IP's

Backwards compatibility looking unlikely for PS4?

PlayStation 4 Ditching The Cell Processor, Sources Say, Which Leads to Some Wild Theories.

The PlayStation 4 will not use Sony's Cell processor nor any possible successor to the vaunted chipset that was introduced to the world through the PlayStation 3, gaming industry sources tell Kotaku.

What we're hearing from sources follow a Forbes rumor last week that chip-maker AMD would make the graphics chip for a PS4, a shift from the PS3's use of a graphics chip from AMD rival Nvidia.
Here's where the reporting turns to speculation. One theory I've heard is that AMD will provide both the CPU and GPU for the PS4, meaning that AMD, not Sony, would engineer the main processing and graphics chips for the machine. Should AMD be doing that, they could go with the AMD Fusion architecture, which puts CPU and GPU on the same chip. AMD has already been putting chips like this out (one was considered for the MacBook Air), which would enable Sony to turn to developers and say: you could be working with the PS4 architecture right now; just work on an AMD Llano chip or something. Would developers like that? They'd have to prefer it to Cell and—what do you know—here's one of gaming history's best programmers, id's John Carmack, saying in an interview with PC Perspective last year that AMD Fusion-style chip architecture is "almost a forgone conclusion" for the future of computing.

Sony hasn't even acknowledged the existence of the PlayStation 4 let alone detailed the guts within it. But we're beginning to hear trickles of information about Sony's next gen. It's all vaguer than the talk for next Xbox, code-named Durango, which Microsoft has been showing to publisher and developer partners.

The lack of chatter on PS4 would suggest that Sony will once again put its next console out after Microsoft. But if the chipset for the PS4 is actually one that already exists, then aspiring PS4 developers might find themselves capable of ramping up for this new machine faster than expected. And if that happens, the code-named Durango, probable for 2013, might have a sparring partner from Sony sooner than we thought.

                          /thread.

Sony has already confirmed that we won't be seeing a next-generation PlayStation at this year's E3 trade show, and now Microsoft has also come out and dampened any expectations about a new Xbox possibly making its debut. In a statement published by Kotaku (following a report on Twitter from Bloomberg's Dina Bass), a Microsoft spokesperson says flatly that "while we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon." The statement goes on to say that "2012 is all about Xbox 360," before rattling off a list of milestones and some of the big titles planned for release this year. That leaves Nintendo with the stage to itself hardware-wise, which will presumably be showing off more of its next-generation console, the Wii U.

                              Kotaku Rumor:

The Next PlayStation is Called Orbis, Specs, holiday 2013 release, no backwards compatibility, anti-used games system

Our main source supplied some basic specs for the console, but as the future is always in motion, bear in mind these could easily change between now and the Orbis' retail release. Still, if you'd like to know what developers are being told to plan for now, here you go.

                              AMD x64 CPU
                              AMD Southern Islands GPU

The former, that's largely something we've heard before, but the latter is interesting. That's the name given to many of AMD's 2012 roster of high-end PC cards. The PS4's GPU in particular, we're told, will be capable of displaying Orbis games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets. It'll also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p (the PS3 could only safely manage 3D at 720p).
Just like the next Xbox/Durango, we've heard from multiple sources that the Orbis will likewise have some kind of anti-used games measures built into the console. Here's how our main source says it's currently shaping up: new games for the system will be available one of two ways, either on a Blu-Ray disc or as a PSN download (yes, even full retail titles). If you buy the disc, it must be locked to a single PSN account, after which you can play the game, save the whole thing to your HDD, or peg it as "downloaded" in your account history and be free to download it at a later date.

Don't think you can simply buy the disc and stay offline, though; like many PC games these days, you'll need to have a PSN account and be online to even get the thing started.

If you then decide to trade that disc in, the pre-owned customer picking it up will be limited in what they can do. While our sources were unclear on how exactly the pre-owned customer side of things would work, it's believed used games will be limited to a trial mode or some other form of content restriction, with consumers having to pay a fee to unlock/register the full game.
Sketches of ‘PlayStation Orbis Features’ Surface, Then Disappear

The design firm Coque Design may have worked on illustrations for certain features of the next PlayStation, according to pictures a tipster spotted on its website today.

The pictures, which have since been removed from the site, were labeled "Illustrations & Sketches for new PlayStation Orbis features." Orbis is the codename for Sony's next gaming console, as Kotaku revealed today.

The photos depict several people moving around in front of some sort of Kinect-like motion-sensing device that rests on top of a television. (As a commenter points out, this device also resembles the PlayStation Eye accessory.) One person is using what appears to be an iPhone or iPod to control music that may be linked to the game system as well.

I'm ok with the "anti-used games" thing... just means I'll need to be more selective in my purchasing. As long as I still get physical media, I'm good

Edit: That's pretty badass that once you purchase the disc, you can also download it later for free.
