Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I just got an hdtv and what are some accessories that I need. I have my 360 hooked up to the component and my comcast cable box. I just noticed there is a red line going through the middle of my screen. It's very thin and I didn't notice it till now. Any help greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a loose cable connection or a faulty cable. Try unplugging and plugging it back in? And if that don't fix it, maybe try another cable.

Most people recommend a calibration DVD or if you can afford it a technician to come to your house and professionally calibrate your tv for like $350 or so. I've calibrated mine just by using some Xbox 360 game settings that help. One day soon I hope to have the money to get a pro calibration but right now funds are a little tight for that kind of expense.

If I got an LCD vizio, like the ones I am seeing on Ubid. IS it better to use the VGA cable for the xbox360? I already have that. Also, how do you calibrate Lag between the 360 and the tv?

There is no calibrating lag. You either have it or you don't.

oh, because I heard about people buying Guitar Hero and calibrating their TV and the guitar responded better..things like that.

Well I bought the visio VX32L refurb. I hear it is real good for gaming, and I guess it is better if you use the VGA cable..which I have.

Any settings I should know about for this one?

'Guitar Hero' has a built-in lag adjustment, you can check it on the "Audio" settings I believe. It's just an internal delay used by the game, no where else.

As for settings, you probably want to out-of-the-box set it to "Pro" or "Movie", which eliminates the retina frying showroom settings, and then pop in your favorite shooter and randomly fire at boxes to see if you have game lag. If so, turn on any sort of "game mode" on your TV and turn off additional enhancement crap like "SharpEdge" "Dark Detailer", or whatever you have.

You can also look over at avsforum to see what other folks with your model are using for settings.

ok thanks..i see the official thread on my TV on AVS, but have not found any 360 settings yet.

Can you save settings for easy switching from TV to video game to DVD?

For the 360, if you have NHL 07 or FIFA 07 there are brightness and color patterns on the disc. For sharpness on the 360 just reduce it until the "white lines" around the dashboard text are reduced, without making it blurry or out of focus.

As for different settings, most TV's store the settings for each input.

Just picked up a Samsung LN-T4065F (40" 1080p LCD.) Its replacing a 30" Sony HD CRT. WOW!! The Sammy looks awesome. Anyone shopping for a 40/46/52 inch LCD, I'd recommend you check out the 65 series.

I am glad I got the Buell- I love riding it, I love the oddball looks I get on the road- I love people asking "What IS that thing?" I love flying into a corner WAY too hot, scared spitless and sure I'll never hold it at this speed- and hearing the bike whisper "Sissy!"...

I really wanted to try out front projection too, and after a couple months of researching the whole idea, I was still a bit skeptical. So to just get my feet wet I ended up focusing on the lowest cost 720p models out there. I ended up with the Mitsubishi hd1000u, a DLP, that cost me $850. Compared to a 32" Aquos 720p LCD, that cost about the same amount, the overall picture quality is very similar. The 32" LCD is sharper than the projector image, but I actually prefer the projector's slightly softer image as the LCD can get slightly grainy at times. The colors are slightly richer on the LCD. Black levels/shadow detail is slightly better on my projector, though this might be more of a LCD vs DLP issue. Now take into consideration that the projector is throwing an image with an area nearly five times that of the 32" flatscreen, and there's no contest as to which I prefer. The projector is my choice for just about everything I watch, and especially movies.

I won't say that PJs are a great choice for everyone, as they do come with lots of restrictions, and added costs along the way. Before getting a PJ you'll need to make sure you have a room that you can almost completely darken. Additionally, PJs aren't really meant to be used like a normal TV that you turn on and off at a whim as that would shorten the bulb life. Then you'll need to use the online calculators for each model to see how they fit in terms of image size, mounting distance/height, seating distance, lens shift, zoom range etc. etc. Extra costs can include replacement bulbs for $300-400, though I got a 3 year lamp warranty for $99. Screens can cost from $150 and up, depending on screen material and type (electric rolldown, manual rolldown, fixed wall mount). A decent ceiling mount for a projector can be had for around $50. Finally, you'll probably need some longer cabling to run your gear to the PJ.

If I have a 360 Xbox and use it for watching DVDs, Do they look better coming out of the VGA cable into an HDTV? Or does it matter?
