Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

Hey, I'm real serious about buying my first LCD/Plasma. Getting my tax refund check soon so I'm been doing a lot of research lately.

I'm sure these questions have been asked a million times through this thread, but I don't have the patience to look through all 383 pages.

Anyway, I really want a 40 inch, but I'll settle for a 37. My budget is no more than $1100-1200. I really want it to be around 1000. Am I too unrealistic to think that there is a TV like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    DaHokieBird

Visio is okay for the money. I mean, it's a cheaper TV so it's not going to look as good as the more expensive TV's.

I would say that's the "glass half-empty" way of looking at it. Before I settled on my Vizio 50", I saw several sets that looked as good or better. However, all of them cost at least a $1,000.00 more. When I compared it to sets in the same price range, the Vizio won in a landslide.

Imho, in terms of bang for your buck you can't do better.

If it's like mine the set will come with a set of component cables. That's the minimum you'll need to connect your cable box. If the box has an HDMI output, you might want to invest in that type of cable for the best possible picture.

I am looking to get a new DVD player. My old player is ancient and it only plays in 480i. I have a 46 inch widescreen Toshiba DLP that is a native 720p. I'm looking for some advice on what I should look for in a DVD player. I know there is progressive scan and then there is upconvert. In my case of not having a newer DVD player would I be better off getting progressive scan and letting the television upconvert it to 720p or should I get an upconvert DVD player that would take it right to 720p?

                          Thanks for any advice.

I thought you had to buy an upconverting DVD player for that very purpose. I don't think the tv can upconvert the DVD on it's own. I could be wrong though.

Agreed. I got the 32inch Vizio LCD. Easily the best tv of it's size in the $500-650 price range and it has just as many inputs and features as tvs alot more expensive.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

Every HDTV scales the picture to it's native resolution in order to fill the pixels. So technically feeding it a 480i standard DVD from the 360 or what have you will be "upconverted" before it's displayed on your TV.

With an upconverting DVD player, the scaling is done in the player and then sent to your TV...the question is which component does the scaling better? Some also can't see a difference, but a good progressive scan player WILL be better than a crappy upconverting player.

Your best bet, and a highly regarded player for DLP's would be the Oppo 970HD. It connects via HDMI (or upconverts over component with a hack) and Oppo Digital also has a 30-day return policy if you aren't satisfied.

Other popular upconverting players that pass the benchmarks can be had from Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic (don't know the model numbers).
