A list of all the Batman trades are here with short descriptions about most of them: http://tplist.millarworld.net/batman.html

    The must reads are probably:
    Year One
    The Long Halloween
    Dark Victory
    A Death in the Family

Arkham Asylum is a one-shot graphic novel that is definitely one to read.
Other one-shots that are essential are
    The Killing Joke
    The Man Who Laughs
    Son of the Demon

Other favorites of mine that aren't on the must read lists are:
    Hush (2 volumes)
    War Crimes
    Haunted Knight
    Knightfall (3 volumes)
    Prodigal
    No Man's Land (5 volumes)

The Killing Joke is probably my favorite read of all time, not just comics or anything. That's how good it was.

Thanks for the list, Kev. I'll probably throw a few of those on my birthday/christmas list.

Meh, I hated how Year One ended.... Way too open ended IMO. Otherwise it was one of the best stuff i've ever read. Too bad Miller's current Batman stuff is a little er, too different for my tastes.

BTW a great place to buy comics and GNs is Mile High Comics. I've dealt with them numerous times without any problems. Since I live so far from Colorado it takes about a week and a half or 2 full weeks to get to me.

Your welcome. The Killing Joke is classic, that's for sure. You won't be disappointed with The Long Halloween and Dark Victory (they go together), I promise. Do you like Heroes, the guy who does the paintings in that show is the artist on those two (Tim Sale).

yeah... All-Star Batman and Robin is just a parody. I read it when it comes out (and it is actually much better on schedule now) but I laugh way to much for a Batman book. Morrison's been disappointing on Batman as well, but the big Bat-books crossover for the return of Ras A'-Ghul is starting up, I'm really looking forward to that.

Damn, I'll have to make sure to get my hand on those two, then. His paintings on the show are ridiculous.

I'm really enjoying the Dark Knight Returns. The dark, gritty feeling is the reason I like Batman hundreds of times more than any other superhero story.

Just started getting into the "Y" series....really good. Kinda sounded a little goofy when it was recomended to me, but I really like the story, and it really seems like "it could be real".

That's the comic by Brian K Vaughan right? Y: The Last Man by Vertigo? I've heard that is really good, I just have never read it.

For me, the past few weeks in the DC Comics world has really been putting out some good stuff. I was starting to get a little bored with some of the stories like the Bizarro one in Action, and the Batman book, but now there are like 5 super good stories going on.

First off, Action Comics just kicked off the Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes arc. I love the LOSH, and having them reconnect with Superman is awesome since that history was done away with 20 years ago. The art in this story is awesome too.

Batman has really been disappointing me even though Grant Morrison has been doing the work. But a big crossover between all the Bat-books (Nightwing, Robin, etc) just kicked off with the return of Ra's Al Ghul, so I'm really hoping this will be good. I liked the first issue of it. A Batman comic that just popped up out of nowhere to me is this Batman Underground one. It looks like it will have all the Bat-family in it as well as a lot of the big villains, so maybe that will be fun. It is a tie-in with the weekly Countdown comics and deals with the Underground network of villians trying to save their fellow convicts from the Suicide Squad who is capturing them.

The Justice Society comic just kicked off their sequel to the big Kingdom Come series from the past. The Kingdom Come reality has been placed as one of the Earths in DC's new Multiverse, so those characters are now real to the DC world and in this new story, the Kingdom Come Superman gets sent somehow to the main Earth and the Justice Society is concerned what the meaning of him being there is.

The Justice League comic is doing a throwback to the old Superfriends cartoon where it is the Justice League vs the Legion of Doom. All the old villains have once again teamed up and are taking on the JLA.

The Green Arrow: Year One story just ended and it was really good too. GA has always been off and on for me and where the monthly comic was kinda dragging, this Year One story was great. Now the monthly comic has ended and has evolved into a Black Canary/Green Arrow monthly taking place after the crazy events of the Black Canary/Green Arrow wedding. The first issue of this new monthly was really good. I liked the art in it a lot by Cliff Chiang who I am not too familiar with, but I did look up his work and I've seen his stuff before. I will definitely remember his name now.

Countdown has been entertaining as well each week, but nothing compares to the Sinestro Corps War going on in the two Green Lantern books. This is one of the best written, most intriguing stories I've read. I think there are three more parts to it, and I hope it finishes just as great as it has been so far. I definitely recommend people picking this story up when it is collected.

Sadly, just like TV shows I love that get canceled, a comic book I really liked, Stormwatch PHD, just had its 12th and final issue. This was a comic I really had no interest in until I read the enthusiasm of the writer of the comic over at CBR's forums. So I picked it up and all 12 issues of this comic were great, there were no off months, just top quality all the way through. Unfortunately, not enough people knew how good it was and it got the axe. The writer, Christos Gage, is doing a couple other stories now and I'm not too interested in them, but I'm giving them a chance just because I was so happy I did with Stormwatch PHD.

                  Re: Comic Book Fans....

I've really fallen back on my pull list. I only get my comics about every 2-3 weeks. At least it leads me to read multi-part stories as more then just one issue.

I'm not a big fan of the whole Superman and the LOSH stuff but hopefully this upcoming arc will be good.

After being so geeked up for Morrison's run on Batman i've been totally disappointed. It just doesn't impress me much. Oh well....

I got four Batman novels today:

Year One, Long Halloween, Death in the Family and Dark Victory.

I'll probably have them all done by Monday.

Year One and The Long Halloween are amazing. Dark Victory is really great and Death in the Family ain't too shabby either. Pick up the HUSH story arc if you haven't yet, thats pretty good too.

Even though you hate Superman, try and get your hands on Superman For All Seasons. Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb are terrific together.

Man I've been missing my comic books

First of all, my father got let go from his job so he can't go to the comic shop near him (that's how I got all my comics) so I just had to cancel my pull list and i'm going to a place closer to here.

OTOH since the Canadian dollar is so strong i'm definitely thinking of using any Christmas money I get to buy a few GNs from Mile High Comics.

<img src ="http://www.tantor.com/BookImage/0544_LastDaysKrypton_D.jpg" align="left"> It's not a comic, but I just finished reading the novel "The Last Days of Krypton" by Kevin J. Anderson (an awesome sci-fi novelist). It was outstanding. The novel was a tad over 400 pages and very fast paced. It covered roughly the last year and a half of Krypton's existance. The story chronicles the lives of Jor-El and Lara and Jor-El's quest to save the planet, Jor-El's brother Zor-El and Argo City, and the main plot of the novel is the rise and fall of General Zod in his attempts to rule Krypton. Also tied into the book is the well known stories and characters like Brainiac and the bottled Kryptonian city of Kandor as well as Martian Manhunter.

Here's the book description from Amazon:
                              Book Description

Everyone knows how Kal-El—Superman—was sent to Earth just before his planet exploded. But what led to such a disaster? Now, in The Last Days of Krypton, Kevin J. Anderson presents a sweeping tale of the pomp and grandeur, the intrigue and passion, and the politics and betrayals of a doomed world filled with brave heroes and cruel traitors.

Against the spectacular backdrop of Krypton's waning halcyon days, there is the courtship and marriage of Kal-El's parents, the brilliant scientist Jor-El and his historian wife, Lara. Together they fight to convince a stagnant, disbelieving society that their world is about to end. Jor-El's brother, Zor-El, leader of the fabled Argo City, joins the struggle not only to save the planet but also to fight against the menace of the ruthless and cunning General Zod.

The diabolical Zod, future archenemy of Superman, avails himself of a golden opportunity to seize power when the android Brainiac captures the capital city of Kandor. As Zod's grip on the populace tightens and his power grows, he too is blind to all the signs that point to the death of the very civilization he is trying to rule.

Through all of this, Jor-El and Lara's love for each other, their history, and their son allows for Krypton to live on even as the planet is torn apart around them. For in the escape of their baby lies Krypton's greatest gift—and Earth's greatest hero.

The Last Days of Krypton is a timeless, ground-breaking exploration of a world that has never been fully defined, and reveals the extraordinary origins of a legend that has never ceased to amaze and astound generation after generation.
                              I highly recommend it.
