Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Something is just always off, either his melody, lyrics, or flow are just never where I expect them to be, every time I'm listening to a song with him in it I have to disrupt my head nod and ask "wtf just happened" at some point. He's always getting washed by his features to me, I've got a few A Boogie songs minus A Boogie in my library, Best Friend with Tory comes to mind.

Does remind me I need to listen to Mobb Deep. I meant to say when Pack brought up 1999 but listening to Nas's discog recently was (I think) the first time I'd heard Suspect off of It Was Written. So when I heard Joey's Suspect I had no idea where it was from.

Drake went and got the producer who makes the majority of the Brooklyn Drill I listen to for his new song, small world.

Whoa is definitely up there for me but at least 3 Mobb Deep beats immediately come to mind.

The song is hard but the beat is not really to me. Even for Mobb Deep songs I'd probably take Survival or Quiet Storm. I might take Hell on Earth over it tbh, when I think of the Shook Ones beat I see Eminem on the train.

Underrated beat that never gets talked about: Let’s Get It with Rob, G.Dep and Diddy.

Beats are just so much heavier now, I feel like so many older songs either have weak bass or weak drums. Going from some older instrumentals to Don't Like is like going from The Beatles to Metallica.

Dispet Anthem and I Really Mean It still hold up.

So now that the decade is about over, how do you feel about how hip-hop music has evolved this decade?

I personally hate it and I like to tell myself it's not because of my age...I just hate the emo/lower energy/mumble style that's become so popular.

I just find it funny because in the 00's the critics were always saying how these rappers weren't ever talking about anything in their songs...but if you compare a track from the 00's to the 10's, what do those same critics have to say about it now? Lol.

I like it overall because I can still find stuff in the vein of the old stuff that I liked, but there is just a ton more variety, I can get everything I need from hip hop. The fact that drill came out of this decade is enough for me.

I also don't listen to the radio so critic complaints don't bother me.

Well from a commercial standpoint, I'm just looking at these iTunes playlists where it has the top songs from the decades. I'm looking at this 00's Hip-Hop hits and 10's Hip-Hop hits and when I look/listen to some of these songs from the 10's, my reaction is like "damn, is anyone having fun anymore"? First glance at the 00's list and you see In da Club, Yeah!, Hey Ya!, Party Up, Lean Back, etc. Upbeat, having fun, etc. Then I look at this 10's playlist and it's God's Plan, Mask Off, Ninjas in Paris (this song is the exception but also came out way early in the decade), Bad and Boujee, King's Dead...maybe hip-hop isn't associated with pop as much as it was in the 00's? Dunno man, I know nostalgia plays a big part of the 00's music for me but it just seemed more upbeat and fun. Now everyone sounds mellowed out, depressed and bored.

In Da Club is upbeat to you? Lean Back more fun than Bad and Boujee? None of those songs hold up except for Hey Ya IMO. God's Plan is not upbeat and having fun? I don't see it the way you're describing it at all.

In Da Club isn't upbeat to you? I love Lean Back, especially the remix with Eminem and Lil Jon. But again that's probably nostalgia.

God's Plan is a perfect example of what I meant how these rappers just sound bored and mellowed out. I'm listening to it as I type this and Drake just sounds bored the whole time and I'm bored listening to it.

A big thing for me and how I'm judging this music too is for the gym. My gym playlist is loaded with 00's hip-hop because that stuff gets my hyped and mentally in the zone (a long with hard rock/heavy metal too). But God's Plan, Mask Off, Bad and Boujee, Trap Queen...this **** would never be on my gym playlist. Dreams and Nightmares is on my list though but that was 2012, bunch of good **** from 2010-12 for the gym. I think I may have less than 5-10 hip hop songs I've added to my gym playlist from 2015 onwards. Off the top of my head I know All The Way Up and 679 is on there. Then I see stuff on this list like Broccoli? Mo Bamba? What is this stuff? Lol

I know music is extremely subjective but Idk how anybody would go to the gym and listen to today's hip-hop unless it's not on these hit lists and I'm just missing it.

If you're not listening to mixtapes or at least full albums you missed the entire decade. I feel like Meek has 3 songs on every tape more hype than Dreams and Nightmares but I have a bone to pick with that song (takes way too long to build, **** is like 4 and a half minutes with 2 minutes of build, only song worse is First Day Out by Tee Grizzly). DC4 was 2016, has Way Up, and I think Millidelphia and Trap Vibes came out that year. PRAY FOR EM AND GAVE EM HOPE!! And that's just Meek. Just realized I need a Meek playlist.
I don't disagree that some rappers sound bored, but it doesn't always work against them IMO. 50 is the prime example to me. 21 on Immortal doesn't sound excited but it's his persona, the beat gives the energy. Maxo Kream almost always sounds kinda bored, Thirteen is still one of the hypest songs of the decade to me.
Best song to work out to of the decade might be On the Come Up by Big Sean. Mike Will pulled that beat down from the heavens and gave it to that scrub. As the song goes on and you grow to appreciate the beat, Big Sean's whiny voice will eat at you until the only thing that you feel is anger at the injustice of this wasted instrumental. "Quick to check a bitch, yeah I check her even though life's a game of chess." WHY DID EMINEM ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN? What use is a rap God if these kinds of things continue to happen?
Out of curiosity, how do you feel about Dark Knight Dummo?

On The Come Up is nice, a little too slow for my gym playlist. But a song I would put on a playlist for sure.

Dark Knight Dummo is okay. Just not my style. I had no idea that was this song...I've heard it somewhere before, maybe a 2K game?

Another thing I don't like about this decade is overexposure of autotune...some people gave T-Pain **** for autotune but he seems to be the only one who actually used it correctly.
