    I'm stuck on:

"**** it's a reason it took like two hundred years for our ancestors just to get freed
These shackles be locking the mental way more than the physical
I look at freedom like trees, can't grow a forest like overnight
Hit the ghetto and slowly start plantin' your seeds"

I get the second half, but the first half is giving me TMZ Kanye vibes.

What's the connection with Noname? I haven't ventured into any comments sections and am not on Twitter (though I keep thinking I need to sign up to follow grass roots news/media).

She's just a comrade, she spazzes on Twitter sometimes. People were freaking out not that long ago because she was saying she didn't want to perform her music live anymore, she felt uncomfortable dancing for White people basically. She tweeted after **** kicked off that top selling rappers were nowhere to be found.

Pretty much everything they put out is good, but WWCD is a good group introduction. For Benny, Tana Talk 3 and the Plugs I Met, also Stabbed & Shot with 38 Spesh. For Conway, I'd say Reject 2 and More Steroids. For Westside, Flygod, Pray for Paris, Supreme Blientele, all of the Hitler Wears Hermes (there's 7 but 2 and 4 are my personal favorites). Then they just signed Boldy James from Detroit who put out The Price of Tea in China, also with Alchemist earlier this year if you haven't heard that one yet.
Been playing Tana Talk 3, A Friend of Ours, The Plugs I Met and LULU.

Benny and Tiny Desk, two things I definitely did not think would get put together.

I understand her point, but then again in the back of my head there's a library of rap songs (and two notable albums that just released) that clearly talk about all this ****. I get both camps. Don't really like the in-fighting rather than coming together, but I'm enjoying the music.

Never would have expected a J. Cole and Noname beef, but 2020.

I've enjoyed her previous work & don't get her point(s).

She questions artists commitment to the cause or visibility (because Twitter is the ONLY platform), not realizing they had already both (Kendrick & Cole) attended protests.

I think the real issue is that she has become more radicalized (or that is what the internet says) and expects that from other "top selling rappers" that have constantly spoken on these very issues.

Unfortunately, like with many people that have knowledge of self or are well read, she has a "tone" of being condescending or belittling instead of informing (because we all have ignorance just to different degrees) & educating.

Now, I understand why she is frustrated & impatient because this has been reality of black people in America for far too long. Still, she needs to have private conversations with individuals, realize that not everyone will be as radicalized as her & that this isn'ta fight that will be won posting some bull**** on Twitter. Those are great gestures, especially from allies showing solidarity, but gestures all the same.

The interjecting of her gender (his choice of words was poor) and calling Cole a "misogynist" is pure virtue signaling.

Cancel culture & Twitter with it's hive mentality is/are beyond stupid, but I don't want to get too off topic.

Last point, and of course Chance has to be the White Knight and try to side with Noname. Just my opinion, but he has gotten really, really annoying with the jumping to defend his "friends" act.

This isn't a fight that can be won at all, especially not with people more concerned about tone of arguments than content. I think she just realizes that and is moving the best way she can. She started a book club to help people get educated on the issues, Cole showed up to a protest and then put out a song saying she needs to be nicer, and she's the one who needs to be having private conversations with individuals?

It’s not just Chance btw, that whole generation of Chicago (affiliates for Smi) kids is going up for her. Mick, Smino, Saba, you love to see it.

Thing is Cole has been out there and on the front lines since Trayvon and Michael Brown so it was just odd to come at him about not speaking out when he has and still is out there.

And I’m sure she knew that but then you wanna go at people and not say names and basically accuse them of writing about issues in the Black Community and making a dollar off of them but not speaking out on Twitter(Which is the reason why this is even going on)?

At the end of the day, this is not what we as community need right now, where we’re attacking each other for no reason at all. The whole thing is just silly and pointless because it benefits no one and nothing is gained from it either. Chance white knighting is funny considering his R.Kelly comments and subsequent backlash he took from it.

Kind of like when he defended Kanye and his love/support of Trump & his comments on slavery?

Seems like he'll just defend any of his partners without thought of how/what they say reflects upon him or them.

Which is entirely his right. I just find him annoying at times and contridractory at others.

What is her argument? That they are using only one platform, but that they are using that platform (their music) which is also self serving?

So, I guess PE, X Clan, BlackStar (Mos Def & Talib Kweli), Rage Against the Machine, Bob Marley, etc. were also self serving because they included politics in their art too? Or do they not count because Twitter didn't exist and now that corporately owned platform is the be all, end all?

I **** with all the young, "conscious" MC's out of the Chi, but this is really a two - person issue.

There isn't any need for any of the other MC's, although she is their friend and collaborator, to attempt to defender her "honor." Especially when Cole was never disrespectful to begin with. I'd love to see all those young brothers and NoName link up with Cole or whomever to create a dialogue. Then continue to lend their voices to attack these issues that affect all of us.

His need for her to "be gentle" came across poorly, but to me it signifies that a conversation could've been had.

As people of color or black people we shouldn't be attacking each other's right to fight this issue in our own way. The risk is the same for all of us & unity is our greatest strength. Plus, posting stuff on Twitter won't bring the legislative & systemic changes any faster.

I mostly agree. To me it’s like man was really that offended over a tweet? Cole is generally quiet, not even saying that’s a bad thing, but his platform is huge. So this is how you utilize it? All the stuff she tweets, good, bad, or indifferent, and this is the thing you choose to highlight? Right now? All the **** to talk about, and your song is about her tone?

There isn't any need for any of the other MC's, although she is their friend and collaborator, to attempt to defender her "honor." Especially when Cole was never disrespectful to begin with.

What is your opinion on Cole's song? Do you think this was a better route than DMing her or texting/calling as I'm sure he could've gotten her number?
