The Observer just observed. He didn't interact with anyone.
WAlternate kidnapped Bolivia and expedited the birth. He was behind everything we saw in that episode.
I don't think Walternate is going to experiment on his grandson the way Alternate Brandon suggested they experiment with other children. Remember, Brandon wanted to run field tests and subject children to experiments the way Prime Walter did along with William Bell so they could move through universes.
WAlternate has no desire to do that. I think his plan with the grandson is to run the machine. He took a blood sample so he could be using that blood to run tests. He probably figures if he can't jump universes, he can find a replacement for Peter to run the machine. Or maybe he has another plan. But whatever it is, it isn't the same as the experiments he was against with children.
The ending with Lincoln and Charlie is important because it will likely lead to them discovering what Walternate is planning. Walternate went through the trouble of abducting Olivia because had he told her what he was going to do, she'd have knowledge of whatever his plan is.
Also, alternate Brandon expressed surprise in how much Walternate revealed to Lincoln, but Walternate quickly dismisses those facts as important to his bigger plan. He said he had to reveal some truths or they would grow suspicious, meaning he has bigger plans than they or us could suspect.
I thought his motivation and actions made a lot of sense.

Re: Fringe anyone?
Sure looks that way.
He already has, using some questionable methods to try and expedite his birth, all while working on long shot postulation.I don't think Walternate is going to experiment on his grandson the way Alternate Brandon suggested they experiment with other children. Remember, Brandon wanted to run field tests and subject children to experiments the way Prime Walter did along with William Bell so they could move through universes.
Exactly, he experimented on his fetal grandson to run tests while being so adamant of not experimenting on children.WAlternate has no desire to do that.
Since we are lead to believe Walternate is highly scheming and making sure to know everything, he would have known Bolivia's sister died of VPE and that Bolivia has an 80% chance of having it, making her desperate to find any way of saving her son. That means Walternate could have waited for her to get the news, then avoided the kidnapping, info leak and (future) suspicions. The ending with Lincoln and Charlie is important because it will likely lead to them discovering what Walternate is planning. Walternate went through the trouble of abducting Olivia because had he told her what he was going to do, she'd have knowledge of whatever his plan is.
Unimportant or not, it could have been avoided with a lot less chances taken with the health of Bolivia and the baby. Also, alternate Brandon expressed surprise in how much Walternate revealed to Lincoln, but Walternate quickly dismisses those facts as important to his bigger plan. He said he had to reveal some truths or they would grow suspicious, meaning he has bigger plans than they or us could suspect.Comment

Re: Fringe anyone?
There was no long shot experimentation or health concerns. That's why I brought up the second episode of season one with the aging embryo. Walternate already knew how to work the process. The tests Brandon wants him to perform on children would be similar to what Walter and William Bell performed on children in Jacksonville. There are no similarities between fact (the aging process working) and theory (putting kids through grueling tests just to see if maybe they could travel through dimensions).
Running blood samples on a newborn child is not the equivalent of taking eight-year-old kids through the things Olivia and others went through as children.
I'm also not following what you expect Walternate to do once Bolivia knew she had VPE. It's a reach to assume Bolivia would be willing to let Walternate speed the baby's development. We don't know what her decision would be at that point. What we do know is that once she was faced with delivering the child, she accepted that death was a reality as Lincoln held her and Henry helped her deliver the child.
If Bolivia did allow for Walternate to speed the delivery, then Bolivia would have to know he is capable of doing that, Lincoln would find out, Charlie would find out. Lots of people would know just how deep his power goes. As it is right now, they can only assume that The Secretary is working with them to stop people that possess this knowledge and abilities.
And what secrets did he really reveal to Lincoln? That the child is his grandson and Bolivia was switched? Those are her secrets. He revealed nothing about himself or his true schemes."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Fringe anyone?
In that episode someone was forcing pregnant women to accelerate development to birth so he could steal their pituitary (?) glands because without them he would die. Once he was caught, he rapidly aged and died. Sounds safe to me.
That's a huge assumption. If he did, they would have had to have previously experimented on children to perfect the process, again going against this staunch "no experimentation on children" stance.
They have proof that the "theory" works: Olivia. But again, how many children did they experiment on before supposedly perfecting this miraculous gestation acceleration? The tests Brandon wants him to perform on children would be similar to what Walter and William Bell performed on children in Jacksonville. There are no similarities between fact (the aging process working) and theory (putting kids through grueling tests just to see if maybe they could travel through dimensions).
No clue why you are even bringing this up.
They made it sound like VPE was all but a death knell, no doubt any mother would do anything they could to save the baby and herself and she trusted Walternate. I can't see any way Bolivia would deny the baby's grandfather, that she trusts as well, when he tells her a way that both her and the child can survive thus saving the stress and danger of a kidnapping.I'm also not following what you expect Walternate to do once Bolivia knew she had VPE. It's a reach to assume Bolivia would be willing to let Walternate speed the baby's development. We don't know what her decision would be at that point. What we do know is that once she was faced with delivering the child, she accepted that death was a reality as Lincoln held her and Henry helped her deliver the child.
As opposed to Bolivia knowing he has synthetic shape shifters, trans-dimensional typewriters, the ability to encase large areas in amber, near limitless government authority, Orwellian tracking systems, etc? Yeah, better keep her in the dark about accelerated gestation or shemight think something is up.
He revealed a lot about sending people back and forth, they now know he can alter people's memories and minds, they now suspect Broyles was sacrificed, that someone inside Fringe Division released information about the trackers, etc. There was a lot more damaging info he loosed there than would have been if he had waited and tried to convince Bolivia first so only Bolivia would have known about the gestation acceleration.Comment

Re: Fringe anyone?
We know that Walternate is a very egotistical guy. I think he knows that there was a certain amount of risk in telling Lincoln as much as he did, but I bet he believes that he can still totally control or manage the situation despite Lincoln's, and now Charlie's, new found knowledge and suspicions
I think that he is grossly underestimating them, and that it will come back to bite him big time, but his superior intellect and Machiavellian tendencies may be able to still allow him to manipulate things to his advantage even if they begin working against him. Especially since he has Brandonate with him, that dude is even more ruthless then Walternate.
We'll see. It's going to be very interesting.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Re: Fringe anyone?
Burns,
We won't change each other's mind so we can just move on. I know we're both just looking forward to seeing what happens from here on out.
Having a fourth season guaranteed is reason enough to celebrate."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. I really, really like what Fringe has done with the character of Olivia Dunham.
I didn't mind so much that she was inhabited by William Bell but I can see where the entire thing was a bit hokey (also seeing Torv talk like that was so freaking creepy and disturbing. How could Peter get intimate with her after that?).
But her character development has been phenomenal. I recall an old interview with a Fringe producer, probably Pinkner, and he said Anna Torv was getting ripped apart in season one by critics because she seemed unsure in her role. Pinkner defended her saying she was playing the character as it was written. And you can tell because Torv just owns her role.
Early on I really loved Walter Bishop. Great character. Great acting. And doubly hard for every actor to play two characters on a series. But Anna Torv has made Olivia Dunham so damn interesting to me.
I hate that little side smirk she always has anytime she says something funny or witty, but forget it, the actual character has grown leaps and bounds. Fringe is about Olivia more than it has ever been.
Now as for the episode, loved it. Might be one of my favorites ever in the series. Honestly, I thought the animation was dumb when I first saw it, but I was more disappointed when it was gone.
The ending, the final line spit out by Olivia makes me want to ask a new set of questions.
"I've never seen him before. But I think that's the man that's going to kill me."
What?! And why does she say it so nonchalant?

Re: Fringe anyone?
That's the same thing I was thinking when she said that.
The guy who sabotaged the blimp had a symbol on his shirt. Was that the first time we've seen it? Also when Walter was falling out of the blimp it looked like he was falling into Raiden Lake (probably a MAJOR stretch but here's a screen).

So many questions!
Peter and Broyles on LSD were both hilarious.

Re: Fringe anyone?
Oh, Peter and Broyles. On LSD. Hilarious.
Peter: "You're bald! I think he's an Observer."
I don't think anyone could watch Olivia recite that line without feeling it was weird. I'm sure it is intentional, but it's just so creepy. That whole episode was a trip and then Olivia put a stamp on it.
Perhaps Olivia has overcome her fears so much that nothing scares her. I mean, for Olivia, when you really think about it, a guy trying to kill her is like a pop quiz. She's been through much worse.
As for Raiden Lake. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it was supposed to be."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Still an episode behind because of travel but I can't wait to find out what that trailer has in store for me."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied.
