Yeah, that's what I meant. I thought they may have left a few too many doors open, but I think they ended it nicely if it had ended up that way.

"They're coming" is entirely too vague without the future episode.

Maybe I'm missing something. What did Walter do that was so out of the ordinary?

I think they knew the show was going to continue, otherwise that episode doesn't make sense at all. I thought when it was shown that it was out of place and if they were going to get cancelled, they wasted an episode. Now it sets up the last season.

That was just following the tradition of crazy episode #19's.

I don't think there was every any intention of jumping the story ahead 20 years permanently. All it serves it to show us what the future is like, what September meant when he said to Walter at the end "They are coming".

There was an interview where they said we would find out more about the future story line. So that wasn't the last we've seen of it.

Well, I don't read any news/interviews etc. because I like to go into each episode "blind" so to speak, so I'm just talking based off what I saw watching and knowing that episode #19 is always crazy/different...

Yes because I really don't see how that ending serves as a series finale without that future episode.

If the show ended with that, everyone would be up in arms. What does "They are coming" mean? Who is coming? I would have been pissed.

The only glimpse we've ever gotten about The Others wanting to use this dimension to house their people is in that future episode. There is no context to the line "They are coming."

That leads me to believe that the ending of this season was rewritten at some point when they found out they'd be allowed a half-season to complete the story.

Otherwise, all they really needed to complete the story was to kill off David Robert Jones and maybe William Bell.

I believe that final scene was filmed with the rest of the stuff but would have been cut if they didn't get renewed for a final season.

That's what I thought was the case.

They wrote/filmed it as if they were going to get renewed (it had become pretty obvious it would be), but "ambiguously" (probably the wrong word) enough so that they could easily chop off the very end in the editing room and have a satisfying series finale, if need be.

                        Re: Fringe anyone?

So I'm rewatching the whole series, and theres a scene in the second to last episode of the first season. They're looking for information about these people who seemed to be spontaneously combusting. They go to the home of a guy who runs a conspiracy website who has a bunch of theories, correct theories, on how it's William Bell who is causing them because he's activating old Cortexiphan trials. In his rant, he goes on and starts talking about a war that's coming. As he rambles, Peter realizes that he's just talking about a story line from Star Trek, and that the guy thinks he's Spock. But he says something interesting. He talks about this coming war, and how there are these people coming back in time to change the timeline. It seemed like it was foreshadowing the Observers who come back and slowly manipulate the world until they can take it over.

There's been a lot of other foreshadowing that's really neat to see after knowing what all happens. There's a ton that refers to Walter taking Peter from the other universe.

I won't rewatch now but I will definitely own the season discs someday. Love this series.

The only thing that could ruin it is if the end is either just Olivia's dream or she finds herself in heaven with her entire family and friends, holding hands as multiple universes becomes one perfect universe.

You guys should check this video out. It has a minor spoiler for next season, but nothing major at all. And they talk about things that happened at the end of season 4, so don't watch if you aren't that far.

The bad news: The end is near for Fringe. The good news: The cast will mark its final season with a ginormous Hall H celebration…
