The food drops came from the island. I think there was a cache somewhere and the food drops launched when something triggered them. the only time a drop happened is when they put the hatch in lockdown mode, there were no signs of aircraft or anything.
The food drop had a parachute attached to it like it came from a Cargo Plane I thought. Can anyone check that episode?

The other thing is that if they have their own Dharma food and supply chain, this has to be a pretty big operation. I would have to imagine that once Dharma found out that the island was compromised, they would go full force to get it back.

Brings up an interesting thought though. Hawking was part of the Hostiles. I wonder if she gets banished like Widmore and tells some scientists of the special properties of the island and Dharma is formed.

Been a while since we've seen a food drop, no?

Been a while, but the food drop showed that they had constant contact with the outside. The other thing about the food drop is didn't we really only see 90 days on the island in 2004?

Who knows how long that crate of food was intended to last, but I would say a month or so. So we'd have only seen 3 or so total if thats the case.

But either way, it showed that in 2004, Dharma still believed the program was active. And Dharma is a pretty big operation, after all they have their own brand of food, air drops, got heavy earth moving equipment to the island, etc.

I would imagine, once the island was moved, all heck would have broke loose at the Dharma headquarters in the outside world. There was alot invested into that project and to have it disappear............

Right! And now they have Dharma Lime.

But anyway, wasn't Hanso behind Dharma. Trying to remember all of the facts, but there are billion dollar companies backing Dharma.

I mean at one point they owned a submarine.....Seriously, the cost of a submarine is around the $100 Million mark, a nuclear submarine cost $4.4 Billion in 1996.

This whole thing seems odd. 1/2 off the time this seems like a very expensive high tech operation.....

And then you are telling me the only way back to the island is to charter a commercial plane that might just happen to fly over?

Or hire a rickety old freighter and a drunk helicoptor pilot.

Where are the Dharma people who invested millions into this project?

there was just 1 drop, and it happened when they accidentally set the hatch in lockdown mode, the door came down on lockes leg and ben helped him. then the food drop happened outside. there was no plane or anything that flew over.

I dont think dharma had contact with the island for some time before the losties even got there.

I mean look at the hard time they gave sawyer and them at first. Basically we see the importance of "the hatch" to dharma. So who is the guy running it when the losties show up? Desmond Hume? Dharma just lets a random guy run their "prized hatch". I think that proves that the hopeless guy who was there, lost contact with dharma and wanted someone there so he was willing to let anyone do it.

Also, if the losties thought a plane dropped the food, they would have went into some type of plane watch mode or gone crazy trying to figure out how the food got there, etc. I think it was design to look like a drop, but came from somewhere else on the island. and I think it came pretty much by accident when they accidentally put the hatch in lockedown.

this was also the time where we saw the blast door map with the tunnels for smokie, etc.

Re: *** LOST: Season 5 Discussion***

All good questions. I'm not sure. Been too long for me to recall what happened with that food drop.

I do remember someone either asking if anyone saw a plane or suggesting that there should have been one. But, after that, I think they were too happy to have food to even care.

A lot of this will be answered if we get episodes taking place in the late 80's and early 90's. Not sure how that'll happen unless there's another time jump. Maybe Faraday coming back will cause that.

I'm beginning to think that Faraday is going to do some crazy stuff that's going to change things. That's gotta be his purpose, right? Why else have this man that's so obsessed with time travel and fixing things?

Honestly, I think they showed the food drop because Hurley wasn't losing any weight and people were questioning it so they wrote in the mysterious food drop so they could show him guzzling ranch dressing.

Either way, with Millions of dollars invested, Idon't think Dharma would just let their project die out.

I think Ben had it rigged to send signals in that water hatch, so up until the point that Charlie and the 1 eyed Russian blew it up, Dharma thought Dharma was still running as it should.

The one problem that comes up for me is Desmond's replacement. He or she never came.

If DHARMA is still running the place, what happened to that fellow? Or does Ben's great talents also reach those people and he either kills them or makes them Others?

Part of me thinks they work with Eloise because she told them that the flight had to be recreated as close as the original as possible. Well, they had no way of getting Sayid on the plane, so Eloise makes (what's her face) kidnap Sayid so not only do you get him on the plane, but you get a "fugitive" with handcuffs.

Is there a picture of the patch?

Problem with the food always being on the Island would be freshness. If that food has been there all that time, it would be old, stale,or just rotten.

I know they drank really old beer, but after drinking nothing but water for 3-4 months straight, Im sure I would welcome anything to drink with a lil bit of flavor, even if it wasn't my type of drink
