                                                    The guy at the beginning is the smoke monster who has been able to control anyone who is "dead" on the Island - but the only person who could kill Jacob is the leader - so it appears the "loophole" was the smoke monster finally being able to be the leader of the others.

                                                        So when Ben couldn't call the smoke monster at the barracks it's because Smokey was already there (as Locke). But appeared as Alex when Ben proceeeded down the temple because Smokey(as Locke) stayed behind.

                                                            So when Jacob was stabbed and says "They are coming" who is coming? The good guys?
