Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

    The Invention of Lying.

Not bad, and nothing special. It's just a mediocre, cliche romantic movie... The idea was pretty good, but after a while it gets a little silly and when it boils down to it, it's just another sappy, cliched romance movie - although there are some laugh out loud moments in which I had to try to cover my mouth I was laughing so hard.

I wouldn't see it again, and I won't be surprised if it's out of theaters within 2 weeks. I don't see many people going to it, or many people recommending it. However, it was an enjoyable movie.

City of Men - Not the classic that City of God was, but a good flick nevertheless. It had the same type of look and feel to the movie, but the plot went in another direction. Don't watch the dubbed version, go for the subtitles. 8.5/10

Blood and Bone - If you like action flicks you should dig this one. Hot fight scenes and a solid story that really took me by surprise. Watching Michael Jai White beat down people in a pair of Timbs is pure entertainment. Can't wait for Black Dynamite! 8.5/10

King of Kong - Documentary about two guys and their quest for the top score in Donkey Kong. I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did, but it was pretty well done. Billy Mitchell is an ******* lol. 8/10

Apocalypto - I thought this movie was going to be about the end of the Mayan civilization, but it ended up being an action/adventure flick centered around one man and his quest to protect his family and way of life. This movie had a bit of everything. Strong characters, beautiful scenery, brutality, excitement... I enjoyed it, but at the same time I felt like it was missing something that I just can't put a finger on. 8.5/10

Shadowboxer - Cuba Gooding Jr. plays an assassin who is a partner/lover to a woman who is ill with cancer. On her last job they spare a woman who is pregnant with a child and the story takes off from there. I thought Cuba and the majority of the cast did a good job (With the exception of ******** Macy Gray who sucks). Better than I expected and quite original 7.5/10

Super High Me - Some comic stops smoking weed for 30 days, and then smokes for 30 days straight.
      Spoiler
      It was alright. 6.5/10

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

Over the weekend I saw a couple old tension filled/"horror" type movies. One was called The Ghost Ship (1943) which was produced by the great Val Lewton. The movie stars Richard Dix as a sea captain slowly losing his mind and it's up to the new 3rd officer of the ship to convince everyone that the capt. is an insane killer. It's actually quite good as the captain is a likable enough guy and he doesn't go into a full blown MUAHAHAHAHAHA rage but rather he questions his own sanity as he does the things he does in the movie. There's also a message hidden in the movie that blind obedience to authority is not always the best thing. If you're interested this is included in the Val Lewton Horror collection.

The second film is a lesser known Boris Karloff effort called The Walking Dead (1936) where he plays an ex con who's framed by a bunch of racketeers led by a sleazy lawyer played by Ricardo Cortez. There's also another familiar face in the WB crime/gangster flicks of the day involved in this and that would be Barton MacLane. Actually, the movie is directed by Michael Curtiz who cut his teeth on the WB gangster movies but who also tried his hand at horror as well. Anyways, a young couple who happens to work for a scientist interested in reviving dead people witness the aftermath of the murder Karloff is framed for but by the time they contact the governor Karloff has been put to the chair. Oh btw did I mention Cortez was his lawyer? Nice scheme eh?

Anyways Karloff is back from the dead but is not quite himself. He has a halting gait, can't speak as well as before and is more or less in a zombie like state. The doctor tries to find out how Karloff knows who killed him because now Karloff fingers Cortez and his gang as the people that got him killed. The doctor never quite finds out but Karloff goes on a killing spree, but one that is very creative in that all he does is stare down his enemies and they do themselves in.

and so on and so on......It was quite a good little film and it's a strange mix of the gangster milieu with horror elements.

Quarantine-8/10. I heard a lot of bad reviews on this but overall I thought it was a good horror film. A few things I didnt like were the main girl. Her screaming and bitching made me wish she would die within a half hour of the movie and it got worse. A few pot holes, like right when the firefighters realized they were locked in the building why didnt they use their Axe and tools to break down the door or break the windows. Instead they waited til it was too late and was barricaded in the building by time they acted on it.

Anyways I loved the camera work ala Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity.

Transsiberian-3/10..Thriller starting Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer. I was disappointed. I was good reviews on it on Netflix and it was really long and boring. A ton of plot holes also. This girl was trying to get rid of a book bag full of drugs in a busy train station. Instead of just simply leaving the bag on the ground somewhere she is completely incompetent and is unable to do that. I couldnt wait til the film ended.

I got this as a blind buy after reading good reviews on Amazon.com
Fell asleep twice and finally cut it off 3/4 of the way through. Long and boring pretty much sums it up.

Yeah, I watched Quarantine on Blu Ray last weekend. It was much better than the reviews it received but, I guess that's pretty typical for a horror movie like this...
Also, I agree with you, about the main actress being annoying, her acting also wasn't up to par either, IMO. Which was odd for me because I thought she did a great job in The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Well, flat on my back for three days allowed me to catch up on some movies.

Adventureland I liked the movie. You are going to get exactly what you would expect. What is the deal with Ryan Reynolds and these bit parts? This movie and Wolverine, he has a bit part when I consider him a middle A list actor.

Away We Go Even though I enjoyed the movie, I felt like it was just too analytical. Every scene to me was deep with life-scrutinizing assessment. Maybe I was not in the right mood to be patient and understanding with a movie like this.

Glengarry Glen Ross Finally was able to get my hands on this movie. I had heard of the movie but never had the interest, for some odd reason, to watch it. But, thanks to this thread I had gained the motivation. Super movie. What a powerful all-star cast. Jack Lemon, who is one of my alltime favorites, was unforgettable. The whole cast was special.
                            Spoiler

No Country for Old Men I had seen this before and was disappointed toward the end, but watching it a second time I got it more. Great movie.

Grosse Point Blanke Entertaining movie that I had seen back when it came out. If you have ever read Lawerence Block's Hitman series, it is hard not to invision John Cusak as the John Keller character in those books. I had to laugh at the whole stress involved with Blanke having to attend his 10 year class reunion along with everything else he was experiencing. Having graduated the same year as this character and experiencing those wonderful reunions, I had to laugh. Minnie Driver was a cutie in this movie.

I watched An American Werewolf in London tonight. Awesome film. It was funny in parts, especially the banter between characters and the general situations of the film, but in other parts it was serious, very creepy, and kind of crazy. The make-up is stellar - it still looks good nearly 30 years later and I prefer it over a lot of current day CGI. Just a badass film. Nurse Alex Price is smoking too.

I saw William Castle's 1960 (I think) horror film Mr. Sardonicus. It's not a bad movie tho a little slow at times. I kinda felt for Sardonicus but they made him out to be an ugly person. I can kinda see why he did the things he did to an extent but yeah.....

Anyways Sardonicus is a disfigured baron who seeks the help of a world famous doctor and said doctor goes to Sardonicus' estate where crazy things are happening such as women having their faces eaten off by leeches and luring innocent women to his "lair" so to speak so he can experiment on them in order to heal himself.

                                Pretty good flick overall.
