Contagion - Think this had been in my Netflix queue for the better part of a year. Really liked it, strong cast and really well done overall.

The Place Beyond the Pines - Absolute gem this was. I'd never heard of this movie until a couple weeks ago and not sure how as it's got a great cast and strong reviews. Not sure where I was when this was released but glad I finally came across it.

Her - just...WOW! From a sci-fi standpoint, I like its depiction of the future. Clean cities, technology that's not SO out there, UIs that are sleek, videogames that you interact with and interact with you. Story-wise, this is one of the BEST films about love (and in general) that I've seen - and it's about a man and his "OS". It's funny, it gets a bit weird (but not in a way that makes the audience feel awkward), it's touching, sad and it will make you contemplate exactly what it means to be real. It will challenge your concept of love and what it means to love something/someone.

Aside from the great performance by Joaquin Phoenix, you have to give it up to Scarlett Johansson. She makes you fall in love with her just by talking; the way she learns about this world outside of her own; the way she wants to connect and share in this very organic concept of love and evolve how we think and approach it. "Samantha" (her name in the movie) makes it hard not to think for yourself, if you were in that world, how you can't not form a bond with an "AI".

Considering the technology we see now, we're not too far away from finding out.

      10/10.

        Monsters University (2013)

This was a pleasing return (almost) to form of the classic Pixar. Lately i've noticed Pixar movies have become more and more sweet and saccharine to the point that they've taken a lot of the humor out of their movies. That's not a bad thing per se but sometimes you want a serious story told with more humor than what we've gotten lately.

MU has the funny cranked up to 11 as just about every scene has something you'll either laugh or smile at but even more stunning is just how much of the conventions of the "college/underdog" genre got crammed into a G rated movie. The only thing missing (and understandably so) is the scene of the nerds/outcasts ogling the cheerleaders in the nude.

Now notice I said "almost" to form, well I think they were a little too much into the humor but they did tell the kind of moral/life lesson story they usually tell but you have to dig a little under the superficial surface of the film to find it at times. That being said the characters are very funny especially the Oozma Kappa fraternity brothers. I liked the Don Carlton the best as he's just this old guy who suddenly finds out what it's like to be young and have a purpose in life again. (Okay, I also laughed my butt off over the conclusion of his story arc)

It's a very good film and I enjoyed it immensely. I just hope the folks at Pixar remember that it's this kind of humor that sets up the serious/sentimental side that made the studio so great to begin with and we don't get back to the more "serious" less funnier flicks.

          Great reviews, Leon and SPTO.

As to Pixar...why have they not announced a sequel to The Incredibles? That was a great movie, and having the kids be older (especially Jack-Jack) and helping their parents (or saving them) would be a lot of fun.

Just saw Gravity over the weekend. That was nuts! It's a completely different world in space, literally. I knew it was up for a lot of awards, and I had read here it was more about the filming then the actual story but it kept me engaged throughout. I wasn't expecting too too much having read those comments, so my expectations were exceeded. Really well done.

I own this on Blu-ray and need to re-watch it. I made the mistake of putting it on one night when I was super tired and ended up falling asleep through it.

Finished the original M*A*S*H movie, since it was on Encore. I get that the movie is a more "accurate version", but I'm still a bigger fan of the TV show. It's probably due to getting hooked on the TV when Hallmark Channel ran it, then coming into the movie with a whole different cast except for Radar.

                    Still a good movie.

Delivery Man - I thought the first 90 minutes of the movie had some touching and comedic moments, wasn't anything special but it wasn't terrible either. However, the last 15 minutes of the movie ruined the first 90 minutes and ended badly. If I had to rate the movie I'd give it a 4/10 at best and this now marks the second movie in a row that I've seen with Vince Vaughn in it (The Internship) that left me completely disappointed in the end.

Fruitvale Station. Wow. Not many movies move me, but this one did. Amazing movie to see one time. Knowing the outcome not sure I can watch again anytime soon. Very Powerful and very tragic.

Captain Phiillips. Very good movie. Tom Hanks was great although I think the pirates stole the show. Solid performances across the board. Easy recommendation.

"Vicky Christina Barcelona" the other day. I dont usually like Woody Allen movies at all, but this one was really great. I can see why Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz were nominated for Oscars for their performances in this movie.
