Saw Bridge Of Spies. Hanks is once again great, and the film delivers. There was great rapport and chemistry between him and the Russian spy he's assigned to defend.

On a side note Amy Ryan looked particularly delectable.

        Jurassic World.

I felt underwhelmed by it. I guess I was never too high on the Jurassic Park series, but I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed. Still a cool flick but I'm glad I didn't shell out to see it in theaters.

The older brother and aunt both annoyed me. Pratt was about the only character I cared about. Him and the other raptor handler.

The movie was trash. I did pay to see it on the theater, unfortunately.

Scream 2 - I don't have much hope for most sequels being good so this one is definitely surprising. It hits the same high marks that the first one etched out and ratchets up the crazy by several levels. The story may seem out of left field, but the way it pokes fun at itself and other movies for suspension of belief it somehow works in the universe. Plus, the scares are still crafted masterfully and have stayed true to the minimalist approach of the first rather than going into elaborate sequences that sequels often fall victim to.

I enjoyed the movie, but I felt that Pratt and the aunt (Ron Howard's daughter) had some chemistry that wasn't capitalized on by the writing.

                ______rtian

So I was finally able to finish watching it in theater last night. Here were my impressions through the first half of the film:

Got about halfway through Matt Damon's flick on the ol' red planet until a power outage occurred. I don't know when I'll be able to continue it, but I guess it will happen some time within the next week or two.

I liked what I saw so far. In fact, it really left me at a cliffhanger moment (and it was actually a really strange coincidence that the power went out at the same time that something happened in the film, almost as if it made the outage happen haha). I could tell that it was going at a very brisk pace, and I don't really think it was going to let up anytime soon. The film had this strangely good balance of telling us everything that it needs to for us to make sense of the science, yet left a lot of the story elements to unfolding in front of us before we were told. Very smart writing, and a very witty film so far as well.

Never knew this was a 3D release, though I was watching the 2D I think it would be very cool to see how they made everything appear the way it did (shooting it to make it look like he's actually on Mars, etc.). I'm looking forward to going back and finishing it out, though I feel like I won't need to re-watch the first half again to make it happen, so maybe I'll jump right in the middle of a screening to catch the last half.

The second half was more of one-beat march, basically feeling like one long scene within itself if you will. It made for an epic first ride, but I won't be jumping on the Blu-ray for I feel that re-watches would get somewhat tedious. That's really interesting I say that though, because I find Nolan's Interstellar (about 20 minutes longer) to be completely rewatchable. And I'm not saying The Martian drags at all, either. In fact, it drags much less than most 140 minute films. I just think that its beat was so instilled on anticipation with every little moment, that once it's revealed you lose that freshness of it all. The first half has less of that.

Anyway, I loved the movie. A much better effort from Ridley Scott than Prometheus, IMO. Matt Damon was stellar, but I think his wit doesn't work without the supporting cast on Earth (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, and new guys for me Benedict Wong and Donald Glover). As much as I like Jessica Chastain, Michael Peña and Kate Mara, I don't think their inclusion as actors/actresses provided as much as a part of Matt Damon's fellow crew members. I almost feel their support would have been stronger if more of them were no-names, if that makes sense. But that beat of the drum remained steady, allowing great timing of comic relief from scene to scene so we weren't holding our breath every time we saw Mars again.

These films have a tendency to either do one of two things: be predictable or had a bad ending. I don't think this film did either of those two things. I say that's an achievement in itself. It's not too sci-fi for a casual moviegoer to go see either, I'd say it's just a straight up drama. Also, any technical lingo that they state doesn't really seem to go over people's heads; they all know what's going on at any point during the film. I think it helps when, as I was saying earlier, Matt Damon's character spends a lot of time explaining things without it sounding like expositional dialogue. I highly recommend this film, but at the same time the only thing that would bring me back to see it again during its theater run is catching the 3D presentation.

I just have one thing left to say. I'm not a sensitive foe by any means, but given how the MPAA conducts business... how the hell was this film rated PG-13?

                  Anybody seen Schindler's List?

I'm thinking I want to watch it; without any spoilers, would any of you recommend it? Note that I do NOT like watching movies with cursing in it. Also, I've read a bit on it and I know there's a couple of scenes where the characters have no clothes (one running thru a street and the other where women are in the concentration camp's shower) but hopefully there's no nudity (or it's masked well)?

I refer you to this page for the nudity as it is against the TOS. And also talks about the profanity used. There are parts that are covered spoilers on there. And DON'T scroll over them as they will show.

It was obviously an incredibly rough and horrible time depicted. Spielberg, in an effort to convey a fairly strong reality, would have to include nudity and language. But certainly not out of context with what most likely truly happened at the time. I appreciate your position, but some movies have nudity and profanity in the forefront, driving the movie for the shock or the laugh or whatever the motivation. Others like this bring it in to keep the authenticity.

I'm not sure how I let this one go. This certainly was the "good" Nicholas Cage actor who showed up and you just can't go wrong with Sam Rockwell of course. If you've never caught it, it's well worth the watch. Also, I just read about Alison Lohman who played the 14 year old. Hard to believe that in real life she was 23 years old at the time!

Our command rented out the theater on base for a movie day and this won the vote. I thought it was an exceptional movie... definitely worth watching.

I'm a big fan of movies based on historical events so it was right up my alley.

                                I'd give it a 7
