Re: What movies have you seen recently?

    Star Wars Saga

I'll just do them all here. First of all, my order:

    Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
    Episode IV: A New Hope
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
    Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Second of all, "machete order" really feels like the way to go. Everything felt natural, and I liked the time in which things were revealed. I also think Episode I was quite needed to get me grounded with characters like Anakin, Jar Jar, etc. I don't really feel it was unneeded, and the pod races were sweet. Still fell on the back end of things when all was said and done, though.

Thirdly, I liked what J.J. Abrams did with this series. I don't know if "modernizing it" is the term that I'm looking for, but he definitely brought proper film-making out of it that I think Lucas, Kershner, and Marquand could not do. The storytelling was right, and it captured what it wanted to in the lens with less instances needing to be told strictly through dialogue. Abrams revived Star Trek the same way, and he was the right man for the job in The Force Awakens.

Though all told, I can now say that I could have gone without seeing these films in my lifetime. If it seems most just that you should see Episode VII only after at least seeing IV, V, and VI, it requires a lot for a newcomer to get caught up just to get to one that they might be more interested in. Meaning... I personally thought the series was a little too weird. There were some things I could go with that I thought I never could, but there was too much involved with weird aliens and such that it was just not my preferred flavor. I like how VII toned it down a lot, but man VI was a struggle to get through with Jabba and those furry guys. Either way, now that I'm literally invested, I will continue with the saga for episodes VIII and IX. As I said, I'm content with where it is at now, but it was a strange journey to get through that I wouldn't necessarily go in with blindly again, all depending on how skeptical I am.

I can only blame myself, though. I wasn't alive in the 70s when they first came out, where they obviously spawned something of a culture and a movement, for whatever reason it may have been (visual effects, outer space, light sabers, Vader, mythical gravitational force, etc.). Something made people excited about it, and Lucas had a big story to tell. People jumped on board and stuck to it. Then the prequels came out, and people wanted their kids involved with something, so they stuck onto it as well. I can't have my Star Wars cherry popped a week in and tell everyone about how it should be, so my opinion actually deserved to be less valid than others who "grew up with it," and I believe that.

In all, it wasn't bad, but I didn't find anything groundbreaking. Again though, I'm jumping into it in 2015 and 27 years young. At least I'm caught up, and will still venture off into what else has been churned out from this franchise. Parodies, video games, all that. But coming out of the theater, I'll say I had a more fond experience with Star Trek (2009) than The Force Awakens. However, looking ahead, I am more excited about seeing Episodes VIII and IX than seeing Star Trek: Beyond. Either way, Abrams did his part to make these things something that I know I would be proud to say that I saw and others should see.

If you're on the fence about jumping in though, I can't just pull you in on this one. The force is not strong enough with me to say any of these films are "must sees," and even if Episode VII was exactly that, I would ask they see IV - VI first at the very least. Episode III was almost as good though, and was worth seeing Episodes I & II to get there. So, in all... if you do watch, do machete order. Boom.

      3. The Martian
      4. Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation
      5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
      6. Kingsman: The Secret Service
      7. Inside Out
      8. Staight Outta Compton
      9. Ex-Machina
      10. Sicario

Surprised that no comicbook movies cracked my top ten as I did enjoy them but didn't think they were great.
      Mine so far:

      1. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
      2. It Follows
      3. Ted 2
      4. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
      5. The Martian
      6. Jurassic World
      7. Inside Out
      8. Avengers: Age of Ultron
      9. Kingsman: The Secret Service
      10. The Gift

I've missed out on a bunch of movies. Other potential films to select from were Furious 7, Spy, Sinister 2, Spectre, Unfriended, Mad Max: Fury Road, Insidious: Chapter 3, Pitch Perfect 2, San Andreas, and Trainwreck. There were other ones that I saw that released on Blu-ray this year but released in theaters at the tail-end of last year (Whiplash, Nightcrawler, John Wick, Big Hero 6) that would have cracked this list.

Looking forward to seeing Creed at some point, and The Big Short within the next week.

Sicario. Wanted to like this more as I was looking forward to it. Like the major cast members in this, but I don't know.... it felt like a version of "The Shield Goes to the Movies". I thought the ending left a lot to be desired as well.

I posted in the actual movies thread already, but if your looking for an amazing Cinematic Experience go see The Revenant once it hits theaters.

Simply amazing. Great cinematography,. Great directing. Great acting.

This is a Masterpiece. The brutality and resiliency is like no other I've seen in a movie.

It looks awesome as hell. It sells so much more when guys like DiCaprio and Hardy are doing it all.

Blzer you will appreciate every bit of this movie from beginning to end. Trust me. You are as much of a purist as I am when it comes to cinema.

This movie, still 1 week later is on my mind. So much that I will see it again, once it hits theaters nation wide.

That's how much I enjoyed this movie

Reverent and revenant are two different things. Is there another movie with a coincidentally close sounding title that you saw?

No no, I was legit curious whether or not you were talking about another movie. I was also curious which word you actually looked up if it was The Revenant that you saw (say you still looked up "reverent," or heck "reverend" haha wouldn't that be interesting).

It's like when I was telling my dad about The Conjuring, and the whole time he heard "The Conjecturing" in his head. Would certainly make about a lot of confusion for everybody involved in that conversation.

Oh ooooo.... sorry, didn't know. Now that you mention it, there was some kind of horror movie with a similar name...sorry about that. I don't do horror any longer.

                            The Ugly Dauschund
A fun movie, especially if you're a dog person. I was really struck by the small cast size and minimal sets used in the film. That's one of the things I enjoy about older films is that everyone and everything used, was for a purpose.

                            The Bourne Legacy
I'm a fan of the Damon-led Jason Bourne trilogy, and I thought this film was a nice extension of that world, although the ending seemed to come about suddenly. Jeremy Renner was solid as Aaron Cross.

                            St. Elmo's Fire
I'm a sucker for 80's movies, especially ones with member of the Brat Pack, but this one is a grind to watch from beginning to end. Not a lot happens and the storylines feel overly contrived. Hard to believe that everyone is all best buds by the end of the film after the things they do to one another during the 100 minutes of the movie. When a stalker is one of your more redeemable characters, your group of friends has issues.

Joy Definitely not what it seemed in the trailer, which I really liked as the plot lines were a surprise as you get into the story. The manner in which this was displayed/portrayed is very unique refreshing. I like Lawrence in these kinds of roles (not a Hunger Games fan at all) and look forward to seeing her in more of this type of flick. She was clearly the far and away top actor in this film versus it being more of an ensemble starring cast as in her other non-HG movies.

A great date type movie. Also a good. inspiring movie to show the young women in your life.
