Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Alright, I have been watching some movies lately. I may or may not leave impressions on some of these because it's kind of a lot to absorb and recollect after having watched all of them, though I do have opinions on most of them that I'd like to share at some point. It's so long I have to alphabetize it, heh (the first three get a break since I have to list them in movie order).
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
Before Midnight
Begin Again
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
The Green Inferno
Keeping the Faith
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Point Break (2015)
Sully

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I actually really liked Man from UNCLE, it showed a different side to Henry Cavill.
I really need to see the Before trilogy, I always hear great things from it.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I guess I can do small bits at a time.
I'm assuming a sequel is in the works?

Definitely not spoiling anything, but don't expect anything in the three films other than mostly two people engaging in conversation. Their past, present, and future, hopes and dreams, talk of love, family, religion, ideologies, etc. I think it might have jumped on a bit too fast in the beginning and Ethan Hawke played a bit too much of a "glass-half-full" in Before Sunrise, but he dialed it down by the next two films.
Before Sunset does a bit more of the same as Before Sunrise, only less engagement with the environments around them and a much shorter film. The last act of the film finally takes a bit of a... not a turn, but finally something that's different from Before Sunrise, and it finally made the film.
I won't say much on Before Midnight, only it is the most different of the three (starts off the same though). Sunrise ended so damn strongly that you are somewhat underwhelmed on how Sunset begins, and I think I'm still too young to appreciate everything that Midnight has to offer since it is now two individuals in their 40s.
I do wonder if Linklater would ever consider doing more of these.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Caught a pre-screening. After all, there was an NLCS game on tonight and my Giants weren't one of the teams playing.
I definitely enjoyed it, though I would be remiss to say that I do not remember very much about the first film. I even read my impressions on it, and honestly a lot of it doesn't ring a bell. Some scenes here and there do, but I won't be able to draw any real comparisons for anybody. Not remembering it much though, I think it's safe to say you can see this one without seeing the first one if that's what suits you. Any connection that might have been there flew right by me, and everything is plenty coherent without it.
Now, if I felt the first film was strong enough despite its flaws, I think I can say the same for this one as well. I think the first one was more of Tom Cruise playing a more impenetrable character, whereas you get him only slightly more grounded this time around. There are reasons for his shield to be a bit lowered though, and I thought those aspects of the film worked out great. I didn't think this movie felt drawn out at all, and any "baddies" were serviceable that I wouldn't be repeating what I said about the first film.
It wasn't riddled with far too many laughs and there wasn't anything in the action that will separate itself from the pack, so it's just a matter of whether the story will pull you in enough. I'll just bite and say that Cruise was my major draw. Without him I'm sure the film would be just fine (and as I said about the first one, I would have almost preferred seeing it without him in a way), but he's a likable action star and is in that last decade of not getting a little more on the senior side of things, so let's enjoy every bit he has to offer until then!
The end credits music felt a bit out of place and gave me a laugh. Didn't stick around to see if there were any after-credit things, but I don't know if this film franchise would be pushing for that kind of thing anyway. I don't know who asked for a sequel, but whoever did I'd say they certainly answered. Will you be alright missing this from your catalog someday? I think you'll be fine; it's good even though it's not the most original thing done. But I liked what was brought to the character (never read the books) and I think that kind of element is perfect for cinema. It worked, and it worked well.
EDIT: And as good trailers do, it mostly sticks to content in the beginning and does not show a lot of plot elements. Go ahead and watch the theatrical trailer; I promise that it is leaving out the majority of this film's story.Last edited by Blzer; 10-19-2016, 02:41 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Hologram for the King (Tom Hanks)
Acts 1 and 2 were very good. I was having trouble piecing the symbolism together. Act 3 brought it to a screeching halt though. The guy playing the driver was great with the subtle humor. I just didn't understand the direction it took.
I guess it's ....
Spoileranother "America bad so let's go global" push. Dunno. Didn't understand the chairs breaking other than simply his life was crashing down. Then to develop the cyst AND the panic attack seemed curious. The female doctor who was also in Homeland ends up in a curious scene with Hanks. And the Embassy party left me scratching my head too.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched In a Valley of Violence. Ethan Hawke and John Travolta star in it. Directed by Ti West.
Pretty good Western. Had a spaghetti western feel, which I enjoyed ala Clint Eastwood.
Good action and decent storyline

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
For The Love of Spock (Documentary). Trekkies need to see this. Others would be intrigued. Much more to Leonard Nimoy than I ever knew.
It even speaks to the origin of the Vulcan greeting. Pretty cool stuff.Last edited by daflyboys; 10-29-2016, 11:12 PM.Comment
