    Mary Poppins Returns

I can't remember the original all l that well so I don't really have a base to judge the new off of. Either way this was really good if a bit long in the tooth for me. The visuals were splendid and everything popped right off the screen. The performances were great and I loved Emily Blunt.

Replicas. If you were confused if Keanu Reeves might be about the worst actor out there, this will pretty much cinch it for ya. This had it all: bad script, bad dialogue, bad acting, outlandish premise and execution. Avoid at all costs.

Totally agree. This was as bad as it gets.

Now from my experience, very strangely my eyes got glassy time and again. I honestly don't even know if it was the story, or the beautiful execution by Aneesh Chaganty. The opening to the film alone made we want to just stand up, applaud, and say: "Bravo." I just can't believe how well done it was. And then there were a lot of familial undertones that I always get me in films that I can't ever not get emotional for, of course.

Finally watched Searching tonight and I thought it was great. It was suspenseful and really made you think hard about where it was going which I like in a movie. Twist was quite unexpected. Had no problem with the way it was filmed. Really added to the whole concept IMO. Good call on this one Blzer.

A Simple Favor with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.

Really liked this movie, its similar to Gone Girl with a little comedy thrown in. Blake Lively is so fine in this movie too. Pretty much she is anywhere

I liked it, but I think with the Gone Girl vibes (plus other films) I wasn't giving the story a chance to become its own, or at least to let me go along with its ride without me second-guessing every action as if I've seen it before. Nevertheless, I liked the actresses in it almost too much to care.

On that note, I just saw Thoroughbreds, which very well may have been Anton Yelchin's last shot film. Loved the casting in this one as well with Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy as the two leads. Much like A Simple Favor, it's a little screwball-ish in its canter (pun intended?) and gives you a nice mental ride down psychopathic lane, something that could only be handled by "the young rich white girl" and yet still come off as slightly sane. It helped having a short run time and the chapter split-ups were a nice touch to look back at to see character arcs evolve over time, and I thought the directing and score complemented the plot and dialogue flow so well. It's funny how the first-billed genre DirecTV gives it is comedy. It is definitely a psychological drama through and through.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Managed to watch a few movies over my holiday break. Won't do full reviews, but will offer some thoughts.

                Solo
It bums me out this movie wasn't given a fair chance to succeed in theaters and is being blamed for the oversaturation of the Star Wars franchise. Is Solo an all-time classic? No, but it is a good movie. Story is well paced and does a good job in providing a solid origin story for an iconic character.

                Blazing Saddles
No way a film like this gets made today, although if you actually pay attention, all of the racial/ethnic insults are done in a way to show you how silly those, in fact, are. The ending of the film still cracks me up.

                Bohemian Rhapsody
Rami Malek was simply amazing as Freddie Mercury. The filmmakers were a little loose with the true story of Mercury and Queen, but I completely understand why they went that route; otherwise we would've had a 4-hour film. The Live Aid re-creation was incredible.

                Bridesmaids
I've seen this a few times now (one of my wife's favorite movies) and I really enjoy the first hour or so, but the last 30 minutes drags.

Bad Times at the El Royale

Much better movie than a google search and rotten tomatoes score had me expecting.

I wouldn't call it great or anything, but I rather enjoyed it.

Used AMC A-list for first time today. Didn't read fine print that the week is from Friday to Friday. Could have watched 2-3 flicks Thursday. Saw these...
The Mule. Best of the 3. Clint Eastwood was great. Even the screen time of him just driving around was entertaining.

Escape room. Actually liked it. Had an interesting plot--albeit pretty cookie cutter in execution.

If Beale Street Could Talk. Good story, but I found myself getting bored and checking my watch a few times.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Having a few days off for the holidays, you'd think I would have caught up on newer movies, but I ended up watching movies I'd seen before back in the day.

                        Some thoughts about these movies:

Shame on me for saying this, but Tommyboy was a pretty sloppy movie. It's a good thing Chris Farley was at his best.

There was a fun run of movies through the late 80's with a common theme. The plots weren't deep, but solid, they were light, and wholesome: Baby Boom, Working Girl, Funny Farm to name 3. Speaking of Funny Farm, I wonder why Madolyn Smith didn't become bigger. What a beautiful woman and not a bad actress at all.

The one new-to-me movie I did watch was Chuck, the Liev Schreiber movie about Chuck Wepner. I went back and forth between the movie and You Tube. Not a bad movie, but the 30 for 30 on him was better. I couldn't help seeing Ray Donovan playing a boxer. The timeline and circumstances of his fight career are played out rather sloppily. Holy smokes though, Morgan Spector who played Sylvester Stallone was dead on.

Minor note but I didn't realize that Viggo Mortensen's character in Green Book was Tony Lipp who played the older Carmine in The Sopranos.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I watched a very good war movie (well it's in a war setting but i'd call it more of a drama than anything else) from 1958 called China Doll starring Victor Mature with Ward Bond having a pretty prominent role as a priest running an orphanage in China.

Essentially Mature is the captain of a cargo aircraft outfit sending out supplies for the military. He's a tough one, always driving his men to the brink in training and who gets drunk night after night in a cafe. One night he's so plastered that he buys himself the services of a poor farmer's daughter and has to live with the consequences. Love blooms between the burly captain and the young lady but it's in an organic and delicate way. There's also a young boy who's basically his interpreter and helper as well and by the end of the film they're pretty much a family unit.

Over time Mature becomes less demanding of his men though he still demands a lot from them. The crew grows to respect him as well. The love story between Mature and Li Li Hua who plays the girl Shu-Jen is played out beautifully and while I won't spoil the movie I will say this, I was a little damp in the eyes after watching this.

The movie is available on Amazon streaming to buy or rent. It's a quiet film for the most part but it's a well acted and well done film.

                              First Man

I'm a bit of a NASA junkie, especially for the Apollo program, so I had to see this.

The performances were extremely good. Gosling and Claire Foy in particular were wonderful. Gosling was fine casting for this part, though I still salute the gentlemen who played Armstrong in 'From the Earth to the Moon' as he seemed to capture Armstrong's stoicism to a T.

Incredible effects and production design, oh yes! Fantastic sound too....really captured the rough ride those guys endured during launches and test flights.

This film also tackled a big subject (Neil's space career for a ten year span) but did it on such an intimate level. Amazingly focused film/storytelling, and to top it off, Mark Armstrong (one of Neil's sons) declared it as extremely accurate, as did many astronauts who also were on set tech advisors. It's wonderfully immersive.

It's like a personal docu-drama more than a movie, we don't have character arcs (at least conventional or big ones) or over-romanticizing of anything, and I loved how peacefully it ended.

                              Good stuff!

......as opposed to 'The Right Stuff'!
