Not when the new guy was bringing in crappy ratings; which Conan was doing until recently.

While I don't think Conan's Tonight show was as good as his Late Night show, Leno's failure at 10PM has a big part in Conan's poor ratings on the Tonight Show. NBC 11PM news broadcasts were getting awful ratings (some markets were down near 50%) which gives Conan a terrible lead-in. Plus, Leno at 10 got heavier promotion than Conan at 11:30. In effect, Conan's Tonight Show was always second fiddle to the Jay Leno Show.

I know. I wasn't defending the move, just pointing out NBC's likely position on it. Leno is a proven draw at the timeslot. That is all they're counting on.

(I am entirely aware that NBC gave Conan no time whatsoever to establish his version of the show.)

I'm still disappointed that they didn't always saying "Year 2000." It always cracked me up when it was 2004 or whatever year and he would say "Let's look all the way to the year 2000!"

Conan has been begging Howard Stern to come and be a guest on one of the last shows to substantially boost ratings. Word is, Howard is still mulling a decision.

Potentially good news. It's TMZ so take it with a grain of salt, but Conan may be able to keep intellectual property as long as he doesn't take shots at NBC.

Sources say Conan and NBC are "close" on his "Tonight Show" exit agreement -- but one of the remaining sticking points is intellectual property. Conan's characters -- like Triumph, the Pimpbot 5000 and the Masturbating Bear -- are all legally the property of NBC (Triumph's rights are a little tricky and may be the property of Conan's longtime friend Robert Smigel).

Conan wants to take them with him wherever he lands -- and we're told NBC will ultimately give Conan the right to his characters, in return for conceding other points in the exit deal.

As for what Conan may have to concede ... we're told the non-disparagement clause is still an issue. Specifically, how long will Conan be prohibited from trashing NBC? Conan may have to fold on this point in order to walk the dog.

Bottom line -- looks like the Masturbating Bear will live to self-gratify another day.

To hell with that, come up with something new and roast them with it at every opportunity.

Why cant conan just do a masturbating monkey etc... I would much rather conan have the abiltity to diss leno and nbc. Im hoping conan can get stern to come on to roast leno and nbc for a last hurrah with the tonight show.

If Coco can keep Triumph while letting the other stuff go, I agree with you. Otherwise, Triumph's inclusion is the breaking point for me.

I would assume that Triumph is Smigel's property, but since all of Triumph's appearances have basically been on NBC or one of its affiliates (I think G4 is owned by them and that was one of the more random Triumph sightings, he was on for a whole 30 minutes covering some convention I think). they might have some rights to it as well.

I think Conan should make a clean break and just come up with new stuff so he can retain his ability to say whatever he wants about NBC and the whole situation. Triumph would be the biggest hold-up to that, but again, I think Smigel is mostly confined to NBC, so I don't hold out much hope that he'd get Triumph without giving up his creative freedom re: the NBC situation.

If he couldn't make fun of NBC for a few months, it would be worth it. They could come up with a countdown clock and work it into jokes as the sensors would edit stuff.
