You're still connecting the flash-sideways with the Island story if you're talking about letting go.

I've moved on from that.

Charles Widmore had his purpose and it was to bring Desmond back to the Island.


As for the Numbers: they do matter but they also don't.

They have a history with DHARMA and the Valenzetti Equation, but beyond that they were a pure coincidence for the series.

Here's some history on the Numbers:

1. Valenzetti devises an equation that explains when the world will end.
2. DHARMA Initiative is formed and upon discovering the Island (yes, I would have liked to have known how they discovered it too) discovered its powers and realized it could use it to change the equation to postpone the end.
3. The Numbers are marked on the hatch that is built over the largest discovered source of the Island's power (because they were not going to find the light source unless Jacob took them to it).
4. Those numbers were transmitted over airwaves.
5. Some nut job heard those Numbers over the airwaves and kept repeating them in the Mental Institute.
6. Hurley heard them and decided to play the Numbers.
7. Hurley wins the Lotto.
8. Hurley has bad luck after winning the Lotto.
9. Hurley flies to Sydney to find out where the crazy guy heard those Numbers.
10. Hurley crash lands on the Island.

Not sure what else is needed there.

Where did you learn points 1-3? I have never heard that...was it in an episode?

I already mentioned it before, but for me it comes down to if you had told me all the stuff I was watching the last 6 years "didn't matter", I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been watching it. There is so much story that we were told that had NOTHING to do with what was going on.

This is going to sound strange I know, but I was never attached to these characters like a lot of you were. I didn't shed a tear once the entire show and it never bothered me when a character died...I think for one to enjoy the way this went/ended, you have to be pretty invested in the characters and I just never got into them like that.

In fact, at the end when Vincent came and laid down next to Jack felt so cheesy to me because Jack had very little if anything to with Vincent the entire show.

No it wasn't.

One thing I will agree with many people on is the poor decision to explain some history outside of the series.

Points 1-2 were explained in several of the outside the show sources produced by Lindelof and Cuse.

I really don't know why they couldn't explain 1-2 in an episode about the DHARMA Initiative (there's an episode that was sorely needed on the series. They missed the boat on that one), but they didn't.

Point #3 was on the show when they were building the hatch. But, yea, a lot of that doesn't make sense if you don't know points 1 and 2.

Ya...I don't do the podcasts, etc. In fact, this forum is the extent of my extra Lost stuff. I've ventured over to Lostepedia a time or two, but it was too crazy over there for me. To me that's poor to release stuff like that, but I guess they figure if you really care about the show you're going to get the info.

Also how did Dharma find the island and was able to leave whenever they want, yet "Jacob doesn't let anyone leave the island"

I feel like 80% of the series had nothing to do with lastnite...

They really need to put out a book or something..

This season had some much flip flopping in it, I wouldn't doubt if they made stuff up on the go.

There was always a way off the Island. Ben told Michael how to get off and the Oceanic 6 followed the same path to get away.

Jacob just didn't share that with anyone.

Now how did DHARMA find this out? Again, I agree that the DHARMA Initiative could have been explained a whole lot more. They needed an episode centered around Alvin Hanso, Pierre Chang and Charles Widmore.

yea, pretty much the only attachment I have with these characters was the good acting...

These guys didn't have the most deep dialogue...

I'm also not buying the reunion, how were they important to each other when they rarely even cared for each other???

I dont see how the years spent on the island was their most important times in their life, cuz it didnt show it in season 1-5

It was coming full circle. It was the same way the show started, sneaker in the tree and all...

The whole "coming full circle" is the one element that you've got to give the fans credit for calling way back in the day. I think it was as early as S2 that I heard rumors about the final scene of the show being the same as the opening scene.

Thanks for posting the video. Although its the same location, its clearly a different time from the plane crash - Jack was wearing a suit when the plane went down. That puts to rest my thinking that maybe the characters never lived on the Island.

1 thing that i cant shake is what is the deal with a few "alternate reality" things: was Jacks kid just there to trick us? What is the deal with the "baby" in the church. Obviously its supposed to be AAron, but it makes no sense as Aaron should have been a grown man.

idk man, DR JONES made some solid points about the "cork" being like the bottle,etc which really had me swinging towards liking the finale, I will quote his post.

I believe they knew the series would end with Jack dying, but I dont believe they knew they would have the alt reality,etc until just before they wrote season 6's script.

Really?? Their lives were a mess before they reached the Island. They were emotionally alone until the relationships they formed with the people they survived and lived with after the crash.

I can't help but smile at all the individuals that feel "cheated" or "duped" by the ending. We all knew there would be people who would bitch and complain after the ending. We even talked about it a little bit ago.

IMO, that was as brilliant as you can get in terms of entertainment. I understood the ending fully and still don't understand how some couldn't grasp how the flashes were an "afterlife."

I'm going to miss this show. I was down on S6 towards the end, but that, IMO, was one of the best wrap-ups I could have wanted for this series. I didn't need an explanation for every little thing unlike some. Hell, I almost gave up when the smoke monster wasn't explained.

But the mysteries are part of the beauty of this whole experience.

Can't wait to get the DVD collection on blu-ray. The pre-order is in. One of the best shows I've seen in my lifetime.

........"wow" is all I find myself saying when I think back about the whole show. Loved it. Loved the characters, loved the acting, loved the story.

That's how I feel as well. Good idea, poor execution. This gets back to my point about the writers wasting so much time with the alt universe just to throw the viewers off. What was the point of us having entire episodes based on Sayid, Jin/Sun, Sawyer, etc in the flash sideways?

It was meant to be Jack's spiritual closure, everything else we saw in the flash sideways was there solely to throw the viewer off. It was a complete waste of time. That's the only thing that really bothers me.

Another important note is the timing of all of this stuff. It was clear from the start of S6 that Island timeline and Alt timeline were not concurrent. They weren't happening at the same time, that was fairly obvious.

The opening scene of S6 with Jack on the plane is what happened right after the final scene of the show with Jack closing his eye and passing away. He then jumped to the scene on the plane - with Rose telling him, "it's okay to let go now." Gotta love it.

I think more people will like the ending as time goes on and they understand it more. The writers threw a TON of stuff at the viewers last night. It's going to take everyone a while to digest it.

Well, let me take that back.

I see that it was about having all of those people realize they were meant to find each other, meant to be together, meant to live life together. All that jazz. A way for the producers to put it all in perspective for the viewers and say: See, this show was really about the characters and look at how they embrace each other.

Cool.

But, it had nothing to do with the story of the characters on the Island. So I just don't care for it at all.

Why should it matter, though?

The show was always about the characters and their journey. The afterlife shows you that, just like when they were alive, they still needed each other to find themselves.

Everyone kept focusing on the island and it's obvious, from the episodes some calling "fillers" or whatever" that it was always about the main characters.
