My dad gave me a copy of an Bill James Baseball Abstract as a surprise gift in 1980 or 1981. I won't say it changed how I looked at sports and baseball, since I was already a Strat player. But it really revealed how much we can learn from stats, and how to distinguish from reliable information from noise.
Joe Morgan is an abomination. He claimed OBP was overrated for leadoff hitters. Speed was the only thing he cared about, as though that speed worked if you didn't get on base.
I think some fans just get confused about what stats are for. If I'm a GM, Wins and RBIs mean nothing to me when evaluating players. I want information that tells me how to predict what they will do on my team, in my stadium, in my division.
But many times fans are discussing what happened. I think Wins and RBIs are perfectly fine for Hall of Fame and MVP discussions. We're not predicting, we are now telling their story. Those Wins and RBIs indicate a big role in the story of a team's season.
Of course, I mostly don't care about MVP, CY Young, and HoF selections. It has no effect on anything, kind of like the Oscars and Grammys have nothing to do with the movies and music I like. It's just a bunch of people voting.
