Finally, the PS3 will also act as a digital video recorder (DVR), therefore replacing the need to buy a separate box such as a TiVo.
Then they must be including at LEAST a 40GB hard drive with it.

If the PSM article is correct, then Sony may have just gone and kicked Xbox Live into second place.
Wow, that sure is assuming alot.

OK I think i'm going to go ahead and ask this question.

If PSP can do that TiVo stuff, why can't PS3 do it w/o a 40GB HDD? Not saying that this info on it having a DVR is true, but if it is.

The best part is the PSP tie-in feature, which allows you to transfer your downloaded digital media onto the handheld for playback.
The PSP is only viewing the recorded material not actually recording.

                maybe I'm an idiot....

but if the cell can handle Blu-Ray, why do those expensive stand alone players just not use the cheaper cell processor, and do the job that way, and keep the stand alone players from costing a grand?

My guess is because Sony is willing to take the big-dollar losses on the PS3 consoles, but not on the standalone machines.

EDIT - Though, I see your point in that maybe the standalones wouldn't be PS3 cheap, but wouldn't be upwards of $1500, either. Hmmmm.

Does'nt bother me. I'll be glad if they get anything comparing to the live service.

ive seen estimates that the ps3 will cost Sony anywhere from 500-800 to produce....

and thats with all the bells whistles. if the Cell can run Blu-Ray, then they could make a stand alone machine use the cell for less than they could create a PS3.

I think everyone is forgetting one important fact here, Blu-Ray ISN'T Sony's property. Sony is on the Blu-Ray board and probably has more control than the other board members, but I doubt its a whatever they say goes situation.

The Cell and RSX doing decoding the PS3 has nothing to do with standalone players made by Panisonic and Samsung; has there even been a price point yet for SONY made Blu-Ray standalone player?

Sony doesn't control what goes into other standalone Blu-Ray players, only their own.

Why? That makes no sense. Perhaps sony won't top it, maybe they will. BUt you make it seem like it isn't POSSIBLE. How come? Sony could easily copy everything XBox live does. I doubt any of the live/marketplace stuff is patented.

From my understand, SONY owns the Blu-Ray technology. They determine who can make players and who cant. I would think if there was a cheaper way to produce Blu-Ray players, SONY would share it with Panisonic and Samsung so the name Blu-Ray could compete with HD-DVD in the price category. SONY wants to get Blu-Ray into as many homes as possible, so they can win the next-gen dvd format war, and rake in the $$$$ from royalities from Hollywood when they make movies for the format.

Nope if they did then there wouldn't have been rumors about MS using it...

                                Who developed Blu-ray?

The Blu-ray Disc format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, with more than 170 member companies from all over the world. The Board of Directors currently consists of:
                                Apple Computer, Inc.
                                Dell Inc.

                                Hitachi, Ltd.
                                LG Electronics Inc.
                                Matsu****a Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
                                Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
                                Pioneer Corporation
                                Royal Philips Electronics
                                Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
                                Sharp Corporation
                                Sony Corporation
                                TDK Corporation
                                Thomson Multimedia

SONY might have the largest stake in Blu-Ray tech, but they don't own it outright
