One thing I wondered about is why Sony or Microsoft hasn't announced any deals where their console was included with a new HDTV purchase.

With this being such a war for the living room media center, why not give the consoles away like cell-phones and make a killing on the games.

I would think that the manufacturing costs of both consoles would be way too steep right now to make a package like that. The 360 is already losing $100+ at the current selling price and god knows what the loss will be at the initial price of the PS3. That would be a huge chunk of change for both companies to lose, especially when MS doesn't have many 1st party titles on the market right now.

I agree with you all. I'd love to have a PS3 as well, to coincide with my 360. However, if the price is indeed above $499, then I will have to opt out. It's nothing against the PS3, but they are throwing in things that I do not want/need, instead of the bare essentials allowing me to play the games. The price will not be justifiable to me. Hopefully it comes in at $449 or below, but it's highly doubtful in my eyes.

We'll have to see how this plays out.

Yep. I remember reading the manufacturing cost is around $900. After that, I changed my belief that it will be above $500. Anything between $500-$700 seems possible to me. If it ends up being higher, I'd still buy it, but by doing so Sony would turn off some people in the general public in the process.

Agreed. I think anything over $499 becomes a bit tougher to sell.
Sure, $550 is only a little more, for example, but consumers are sort of trained to think in certain ways... and anything over $499 just sounds really expensive for a console - and I do think they'd lose some sales from that.

But it seems as if it's going to cost more (maybe a lot more) than $499 at this point.

You'd think that with a stated goal of a spring launch, that Sony would have released some information by now. It's odd.

count me out if the ps3 is 500 bones or above!!!!!!! I won't spend 200 more dollars on the ps3 rather then the xbox. Besides it would work in Xbox360's favor. Think about it if the Ps3 sells for 500 bones and the 360 premium drops even 50 bucks. Wow. No comparison for me. The thing is for me though I just play games on my console and that's all I want. That's why I buy a VIDEOGAME SYSTEM..... Oh well some people just have to have it all.

Something else to consider....MS will probably launch the add-on HDVD player this holiday season. If they make it very affordable for those that own a 360..sayy $100...and package it as a bundle with a new 360 for say $450...that could be a killer blow....Sony has too much to lose if they miss 2006, but their arrogance might be their downfall..which is a funny thing to say since they are going up against one of the more arrogant companies on earth MS..

I gotta agree with you on everything you said until you mentioned MS as the most arrogant company on earth. I have never felt that way about them in fact I always felt just the opposite. IMO I beleive they just try harder to out do the competition and have more cash as well. MS is just real good at listening to their customers and giving them what they want. The S Controller was a good example, gamers b*tched and MS came out with a smaller controller.

I'm pretty keen to pick up on arragoance and that's one of the things I have always disliked about Sony. The ONE THING that will get Sony is the 10 year PS3 plan. Because we all know that whatever the PS3 turns out to be in another 4 years the Xbox 480 or whatever it's called will probably be out and it will trump whatever slight performance gap the PS3 may have over the 360.

Add to the fact that anything with the name Sony on it adds 100 bucks to a retail price. Even when it does the exact same thing as its competitors.

That's from a gaming perspective...I used to be a technology headhunter so I know them from a different perspective....a lot of I.T. people used to (and probably still) feel that they are the most arrogant company on Earth...as a gaming company I have enjoyed their products and I liked the bigger controllers
