Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion discussion Part II

Anyone thats havind a problem with loading times or anything like that heres something I found and posted in another thread. Bethesda apparently built in a way you clear the hard drive cache before playing Oblivion.

"Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360's that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.

To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one. Once you see the “Bethesda Softworks” logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.

Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data."

There is a main story you can follow if you choose to. The game starts off with a cutscene to give you some idea of what's going on and the 1st part of the game is sort of a tutorial as well as set-up for the main story. Once you're done with that part, you can choose to pursue that story or do other things (or both).

The cool thing is, there are also dozens of different books you can find throughout the game. They have pretty cool stories in them and give you a lot background on the world and different races. There's a lot of information. You can choose to read them or not, but reading them definitely gives you a sense that you're truly playing in a fully realized world with a history. One other cool thing is that sometimes just opening up one of the books up some of your stats.

I picked a copy of this up for the 360 yesterday. While the game does look good, I am not sure if I am getting the maximum video quality. It's weird and maybe it's just me. I have my 360 hooked up to a 51" widescreen HDTV. I also verified that the 360 is set to the max video quality (1080I) and that my switch is set to HDTV on the plug on the back side of the system.

Some of the surrounding hills off in the distance and some stuff that is significantly closer to where I'm at just looks more pixelated and less defined than pictures and video I've seen online or even the game on demo at EB.

Like I said, maybe it's just me......can't put my finger on it. Maybe it was just late and my eyes were tired. I was expecting something much better in terms of video quality.

Don't take me wrong here, I'm not bashing the game. From what I've played so far, it's awesome !!! Just puzzled on the video quality.............

The details, like the rings in chainmail armor look awesome when you put the controller down for like a minute or press in both thumb sticks and an moving camera takes over. I think most of the hi-res photo's come for this camera.

Objects are extremely detailed you just need to zoom in to see it.

In thinking about it, I believe I still had my weapon attached which is the reason the torch didn't work. This newbie needs to get his head on straight. Playing this game on little sleep is tough. Thanks for the help guys. I will try again after work.

If you have a shield equipped, the torch won't show up.

OK that makes sense. I had my sword and shield equipped. Thanks Sully!

What's the point in buying a house? I know you can sleep there, but what are the other reasons?

Is it like GTA, in the sense that if you store something in one house, you will have access to it in any house? Or is it if you put something in one house, you will only be able to get it back at that particular house?

Has anyone had a strange echo when dialogue comes out of your rear speakers? I thought Morrowind had some kind of strange Dolby Digital glitch and I am beginning to wonder if Oblivion has the same....not that it will matter since this game has been so enjoyable.
