Re: Official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Discussion

To anyone who has the "game of the year" edition...

is there 2 discs? I just bought a used copy for cheap(beat the game and traded it in way too early a long time ago) and there seems to be only one disk.

I just want to know if there is 2 for sure, otherwise I'm not sure how I'd get the shivering isles and knights content.

I'm thinking someone had the original - bought the goty edition - returned the game without the other disc and they didn't notice.

      for 360? or PC?
I know for sure PC has 2 discs. But 360 I think it would just be one, as there would be no reason to have 2 for the 360.

thanks for answering...I've been looking online and saw a few people talking about 2 discs. I took the disc out of my xbox and didn't notice when I put it in that it says "disc 1" right on it lol.

so there are for sure 2, ...I'm just pissed now because future shop only had that one used copy. I'm going to try and demand they give me a new one since they screwed up, but they don't give a ****.

the thing is the box doesn't even look like it should fit 2 discs...it would just be one on top of the other unlike most 2 disc things where the other one is on the back.

yeah it's a 2-disc game, but you never switch discs. the 2nd disc is the Knights of the Nine and the X-pack(shivering Isles). you have to install the 2nd disc to your hard drive to use it.

most multi-disc games on 360(that I know of anyway) stack the discs up on one side. Lost Odyssey is a 4-disc game, and you have to switch them out too. all 4 were stacked on one side. needless to say, they don't usually like to stay in their place. lol

that sucks that it didn't have the 2nd disc. you would think they would check things like that.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Discussion

There's one thing that drives me crazy about this game. I have both it and Fallout 3, and Fallout runs so much better on basically the same settings. I don't have the constant stuttering problems a lot of people seem to have, but what I do get is the game dropping into slow motion (because of low FPS). I identified the problem as being related to the shadow and specular lighting, and it gets a lot better when I turn both down/off. But I don't have to do that for Fallout - It runs the High graphic configuration flawlessly.

Is it as simple as Fallout just being better optimized than Oblivion?

                  My specs, FWIW:

                  Vista 32-bit
                  Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 Ghz
                  2 GB RAM
                  NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT

And again, I rarely if ever see a frame drop in Fallout with this same system and game settings. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Follow-up: I remember what caused the slowdowns now. It was from changing the ifpsclamp setting to 60, which smooths out the games' microstuttering that I get hit HARD with on the default setting. Problem is, when the game's FPS drops below 60, you get the slow motion gameplay.

The reason I couldn't figure out what was going on at first is that I still had my tweaked Oblivion .ini file from several months ago (when I discovered the fpsclamp thing) despite uninstalling and reinstalling Oblivion several times. This is the key - uninstalling didn't delete or modify that file in anyway. It's even in an entirely different folder that the Bethesda one, off in the user/documents section. Same for Fallout, which I changed the same setting on. When I deleted the .ini's yesterday to send everything back to default (trying to figure out the slow motion thing), I once again got the terrible microstuttering and didn't know why.

So at least now I'm back to square one - after making that change again to the new .ini. Unfortunately that doesn't help with the slo-mo though - It's just about impossible to keep Oblivion running at 60 FPS all the time. All I know is that I can't play with the fpsclamp at anything but 60 - I can't stand that microstuttering. It looks something like this (Fallout of course, but same diff):

^^IDK if you did this, but when editing .ini files or any game files at all, make sure you back it up in case you mess up or something. that way you can go back to defaults if necessary.
just advice. maybe you already know that.

Reminds me why I don't miss PC gaming. Yes, I miss the free mods, but I still put over 150 hours in on Oblivion and am now playing through Shivering Isles (which is excellent).

I just beat Shivering Isles today for the whole 100% in the game, and it was pretty good.

I really had more fun with this game once I beat Fallout 3.
