I have good news then. As long as you do a certain sidequest, you, as a sentinel, will be able to be a medic.

And now that I read their abilities list a little more closely, those classes look like a necessity for the harder difficulty settings...

I'd be interested in seeing if people can beat the game on Hardcore or Insanity without upgrading their squad to the specialized classes

Well I am officially hooked on the game, I love it, it's great. Even if it doesn't win GotY, it's my GotY. Best game I've played all year. The first time I opened the Galaxy Map I was awed at how big the game felt, and I haven't been this interested in a story since MGS: Snake Eater.
        PS: You guys are great.

Only Shepard can be those classes.

              That's what I feared *sigh*

Here's a nugget of info from the guide:

              Landable Planets: 35

Non-Landable Planets/Asteroids: 80 (but surveyable for resources) Some are hidden, and must be found somehow.

Inert Planets: 69 (no elements or mysteries, just there to make the map look good)

                Re: Mass Effect - Impressions

Just completed the game in 29 hours or so. I ended up lvl 49. I did all of the sidequests I could find and explored every planet, but I know I probably missed some since I didn't get all of the codex entries. Either that or it takes multiple playthroughs because of your gender or romance choice.

I would say that the main story and associated combat scenarios surpass KOTOR. Each of the main story areas really deliver. It's a shame the supplemental gameplay pieces (MAKO planetary exploration, that silly, uninspired "Simon" decryption minigame) pale in comparison. It's my GOTY, but it's not Bioware's best.

                  Re: Mass Effect - Impressions

I'm really getting to like combat...I might run with a Biotic guy in a 2nd runthrough, it's been cool using a full Biotic as a teammate. I find I like a full out soldier (Ashley is my Kellen Winslow!), the full biotic I also spec to heal, and then my infiltrator who is good at decrypting and electronics, along with pistol. It just took me a hour or two to get a team I liked and use their abilities wisely. I kinda ignore the other characters I don't use (combat wise, I talk to them to go through conversation arcs), but oh well. My 2nd time through (with a completely evil male Shepard) will be different because I'll be Biotic and need to compensate otherwise.

I'm totally addicted now, and I've been doing mostly side quests until I started the 2nd of the 3 main quest stuff you get earlier on.

I do agree with the comments on planetary stuff and the minigame. Look at Bioshock, the hacking minigame was the game "Pipe Dream" from Game Boy and PC back in the day. That was a lot of fun and remarkably intricate given it's a mini game. Simon just doesn't cut it. I'm sure there's a lot of hidden things you can find on the planets if you drive enough, but it does get kinda old, most of the planetary stuff is somewhat repetitive. Still fun though, I really like leveling up my guy, and with downloadable content we might get a whole new chapter or two (something similar to Oblivion).

I want to play through the whole thing before commenting on GOTY, but I'm over 20 hours in and not near done yet...any game that has me playing that much over the first 2 days is damn good!

I meant to stop playing about 4 hours ago. Once I got out of the citadel, I couldn't stop playing because it was too much fun exploring planets. It's sleepy time now.

Mhmmm. I started playing at roughly 7, and before I knew it it was 1. I love this game.

I spent about an hour trying to get him to look like me, and for the most part that's pretty accurate. I just wish the goat-tee color was darker because you can barely see it.

                          um... I beat it.

17 hours... in two days. Don't know what to tell you guys, I don't usually play a game for about 6 hours straight, but time goes by hella fast when you play Mass Effect.

I know I usually don't rush through games. The reason so many people are beating it so quick though is because they become addicted to it. After awhile I said "Screw the side, quest, I got to find out whats going on."

                          Great story BTW.

Its good I beat it before Thanksgiving. Now I can ignore it for a day knowing my duty is done

I did start a female character up, and I played the first part with her and it almost seemed like it was my first time playing the game.

This is my game of the year until I play Mario. Otherwise, IMO no other game accomplishes what this game does. A few tech issues sure, Vehicle combat could be better yea, but other than that, the game is fantastic and I don't know how Gamespot could give it anything lower than a 9.

Found that out mashing buttons during my 10th time through a cutscene, lol

Definitely taking a little getting used to with the "Save, die die die die die die die die die finally not die" gameplay again lol
Thanks for that, I saw one cutscene what like 8 times. I knew they couldn't forget something like this.

I think holding down the X button specifically will skip through parts of dialogue.
