A little embarrassed to post this but does anyone else come up with a back story for their character before starting? I find that I have a much easier time getting into a character and sticking with him if I have some back story, traits and specific goals vs a go everywhere, do everything type of character.

That's why I went with an Imperial again. Some sort of convoluted story of my guy being related to my Oblivion character.

I have a good and evil character.

Good=Nord, main quest, liberator of skyrim, companions quests.

Evil=Elf, Dark Brotherhood, Thievs Guild, create general madness and mayhem.

Pretty much identical to my main two characters.

I do that in all of these games and create a super good guy and then a real POS who is an evil as can be. Probably says something about me that I usually prefer playing as the evil one.

First of all, it's completely okay to come up with a back story for your character. Anything that makes you care more about your character or gets you into the game even more is good. Plus, you're among gaming friends. You won't get judged by some idiot who doesn't "get it."

I never really thought about doing that with Skyrim. I think it would be cool if the actually implement that (like Mass Effect's pre-service history/reputation feature) in the next Elder Scrolls game, or whatever RPG Bethesda may be working on (Fallout 4, anyone?).

I usually just end up being a go everywhere, do everything kind of guy, but I do specifically make my guy completely good or totally evil. On my first play through, I was completely good, and then I got caught up in the Dark Brotherhood. I guess I got seduced by their armor. lol

in my opinion, your approach is the best way.

if you play a "jack-of-all-trades, do everything" character the game can become stale and you lose a sense of what your character is supposed to be about. I've never liked the idea of joining every faction with a character just for the purpose of doing all the faction quest lines...

They removed the article from the blog since I guess the beta has been delayed a bit, but here is some news about the 1.5 update:

Today on Steam we've released a new beta update that gives you a first
look at what's we'll be bringing to PS3, 360, and PC in the
                      forthcoming 1.5 update.

In addition to a number of new bug fixes, we're now using title
updates as an opportunity to add new features to the game. Included
in this update, players will be able to enjoy all-new kill cameras,
including ones specific to ranged combat and magic.

Sound familar? That's probably because they had a cameo in the Game
Jam video [1] shown during Todd Howard's DICE keynoteTodd Howard
                      presented at DICE.
Nice. Here's a refresher of the game jam video and all that's possible in this game:

SSX and ME2/ME3 have put a major damper on my progress in this game unfortunately.

Anyone try the Armed to the Teeth mod yet? Takes a little bit of work but you can make your character look badass. Here's my character with:

                          Steel greatsword (vanilla)
                          Quiver (scout armor mod)
                          Woodsman's axe (Jaysus swords)
                          Norse Sword (Jaysus)
                          Hunting knife (Jaysus)

It's not bad if you just have a few weapons you stick with. If you switch up a lot it's more trouble than it's worth.
