They can also be made yourself through Alchemy.

Somebody earlier was questioning whether alchemy was useful at all. There's one reason it is.

Edit: I've never seen potions that fortify Alchemy (only apparel) and they can't be created either.

Care to elaborate on the first point or is it spoilerific?

        Bad grammar on my part.

That's my second point and it was meant to refer to my first point that you can make fortify skill potions yourself.

There are a ton of poisons and restore magicka/health/stamina potions in the world but I haven't found many fortify skill potions at all.

Ah gotcha thanks. Yeah I definitely think you are right now (about there not being alchemy boosting potions) that I think about it. I've seen potions for improved blacksmithing and enchanting but not alchemy.

I wonder if the potion says something like "15% boost of smithing for the next 60 seconds" does that just mean say you are rated 65 it bumps your rating to 80 or if it means say you were making a piece of armour that gives you 100 protection it would now be 115 permanently if that piece was made during the 60 seconds?

LOL, same here. I keep killing my damn Dog, it's like the game wants the thing dead. There are times I won't be swinging remotely close to him and it will still hit him instead of the enemy right in my face. My F9 button has gotten a lot of work.

I'll try to explain it the way I see it. Smithing and alchemy/enchanting works differently when it comes to potion (or apparel) boosts.

In smithing each item can be improved by tiers; fine, superior, exquisite.....legendary. A minimum skill requirement is needed to get to the next tier. If you have a perk specializing in that specific type, i.e. steel or glass, the minimum skill level requirement is lower. Here, boosts directly influence your skill rating so if you drink a potion that increases smithing, and it's enough to get move your level to the next tier, then you can improve that piece of gear.

In alchemy and enchantment it is purely % based and has no tiers. The skill boosts are directly reflected into the strength of the potion or enchantment. So, unboosted, you create a potion that restores health by 50 points. Then put on some equipment that boosts alchemy by 20% and make the exact same potion, it will create a potion that restores health by 60 points.

My enchanting level sucks right now but I'm pretty sure this is the way it works in enchanting also. Unboosted, create a weapon with fire damage of 100. Boosted by 20% you could create a weapon with fire damage of 120.

The tiers are really just in name only, the magnitude of your smith skill still determines what the final ratings will be. For instance I go and create a steel dagger (8 dmg), honed at 100 smithing (23 dmg), honed with +15% bracers (25 dmg), with additional +20% potion (28 dmg). BTW, none of that effects the actual creation of items, so don't bother with potions when creating at the forge, just when refining.

BTW, the best two alchemy ingredients I've found for fortify enchanting potions are blue butterfly wings and snowberries, hagraven claws work too but are harder to get. For fortify smithing, blisterwort (mushroom) and glowing mushroom, also sabre cat teeth but I had a ton of the others.

Great point. Once Legendary is obtained this is true. There are tiers above Legendary that don't change the name on the piece but absolutely do change the stats of the equipment.

I just started my game last night out of fear of beating Batman too soon. Now I've played only a little of Oblivion and Fallout 3, but this feels like there is soooooooooo much more to this game. I literally do not know where to start. After I got out of the opening cave or whatever, I immediately left that guy I was with and got lost on a snowy mountain for awhile, killing a few bandits and ransacking their half-castle. I wanted to be an Argonian archer, but everytime I see that two-handed battle axe in my inventory my inner child just screams SMASH! I have no idea how I want my game to play out.

Just out of curiosity: is there anyone playing this that has tried Skyward Sword? I am sure it is good on its own merits, but somehow it feels "less than" after putting so much time in with Skyrim.

I've had this for 2 weekends and I'm hooked again.

Can't wait to run through the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood....

                          I'm a stealth archer/dagger guy.

Question on dual wield, do you hit both LT and RT (or R2 and L2 on PS3) for a sneak dual attack? I'm trying to figure it out and I'm only getting the 30% bonus. That's been fine for all the guys so far, but want to understand how to best dual wield more.

Also, I've only been using magic to heal myself, and haven't leveled up Magicka at all...is it worth it to do so (as well as trying to use some new spells) or should I focus on Archery, Sneak, and 1 handed for my perks?

I haven't put any points in 1 handed yet, but that's next at some point (want to get Sneak higher, and the Archery ones as well since that's my primary attack.

Just looking for some interesting discussion, I'd like to learn how best to lay my guy out....

Skyrim serial killer video from Gameinformer.com

We've seen plenty of interesting fan videos since the launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but there's been nothing as wildly creepy and disturbing as this one. If you're squeamish or easily freaked out, I recommend turning away now.

I'm essentially playing the same character as you. I mainly snipe every enemy with my bow while sneaking. I have the perk for the 15x damage for sneak attack with weapon but I just never use it. I find it hard to sneak all the way up on someone. Why not just shoot them with an arrow? That's my thinking at least. Sometimes you don't know if there's another baddy waiting around the corner.

I'm starting to learn how to make my own poison potions so I can start using those in conjunction with my sneak bow attack.

For healing I typically just use a heal spell. I think I only leveled up my magicka to 130 or so. I typically don't use it.
