Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
OK guys count me into the "Skyrim Obsessed" crowd. I think I might need a little help though.
To give some background, oblivion was the first type of game like this I played, I never really "got it" as I just layer it like a regular game, I never understood the closing gates stuff, I just played it like you would play GTA or something.
I never finished it or got too far into it. Now, playing Skyrim, I understand the concepts a bit, but I feel like I am missing out on a lot. For instance, I leveled up to about 10, and I keep getting these points to add to the constellations, but i never get anything out of it. How do I get to conjure people(which I added a point to), etc?
Secondly, how do I shape my character? So far I'm just running quests, killed a few dragons, and have 4 shouts, but I haven't been able to change my character in any way. Like some people are rouges or something, I just run around killing stuff with whatever axe I currently have picked up. Am I supposed to be getting better stuff eventually? Do I buy this stuff?
I keep paying my companion for archery training, but when facing a dragon, I literally do zero damage with a bow and arrow, once I started hacking at it with my sword, he died pretty quickly though.
So far I've done the thieves guild and the dark brotherhood, but other than that its just been some side quests and a few on the main storyline with the dragon borne stuff. Any recommendations on where I should be, or whats the best way to fully develop my character?
For instance, I leveled up to about 10, and I keep getting these points to add to the constellations, but i never get anything out of it. How do I get to conjure people(which I added a point to), etc? I don't see a "conjure people" perk but if you're talking about the basic skill of conjuration, putting points into that constellation tree makes you better at using that type of magic. e.g. Cast spells from that school at half cost or do more damage with that school of spells. In order to use that magic though, you need to find or buy a spell book that contains a spell from that school of magic. Once you learn the spell you can then cast it (given you have sufficient magicka). Some spells take a lot of magicka to cast and aren't suitable for novice mages.
Secondly, how do I shape my character?
Skyrim isn't your typical RPG that allows you to put points into skills when you level up, it's kind of the opposite. Your main level raises after raising your skills to a certain point. All the different constellations represent those base skills that you can raise. To raise that skill or "shape your character" simply use that ability during your adventures. Want to get better at archery? Use bows to take down opponents, damage dealt with bows will raise your archery skill. Want to become a rogue and move around undetected? Sneak a lot to raise your sneak skill.
I just run around killing stuff with whatever axe I currently have picked up. Am I supposed to be getting better stuff eventually? Do I buy this stuff?
By doing this you've been increasing your 1handed weapon skill (or your 2handed weapon skill if it was a 2 handed axe). It's probably much higher then your archery skill so that's why you're doing more damage with it. The higher your skill rating in a particular skill, the more damage you'll do with that type of weapon. Each weapon has a base damage that is modified by your skill level and the perks you've chosen. So better weapons do more damage, but if you're using a weapon that you're not skilled in it's going to be crap damage compared to using one you are skilled in.
Any recommendations on where I should be... You should be where ever you want to go. The best thing about Skyrim is that there is so much to do. I can guarantee you every person in this thread has gone a different way since the start of the game. Sure, a few people may have completed the same quest, but maybe not in the same way. The way I do it, I look through my quest log and find a quest that sounds interesting and try to follow up on it. Usually i get sidetracked before completing that quest. Sometimes, I simply go a direction on the map that I haven't traveled before and see what kind of trouble I can get into.
or whats the best way to fully develop my character? To develop you character, you just need to figure out what kind of adventurer you want to be. Want to be a stealthy assassin? Wear light armor and sneak everywhere. Use swords or daggers or bows and attack opponents that unaware of you and then looting their corpse. Want to be a brute knight? Equip some heavy armor and find yourself a huge two handed axe and charge into battle. Want to be a wizard spitting fire from one hand and lightning from the other? Equip some robes or light armor, learn some spells and roast your enemies from a distance. Want to be a combination of any of those? An assasin that has magic? You can do that too, just concentrate on using the skills and you'll get better at doing what ever you want.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The leveling system works in a different way than mmo's or other RPG's. The way you play your game or your play style determines how you level. So if you are using a 1 handed axe, you will see your one-handed skill level grow higher. You will do more damage using your one-handed weapon than you would a 2 hander. So in theory you should be putting at least some of the perks at each level into the skill that you are mostly using. At the same time, if you switch to a bow and try to kill something without really ever using it, you will not be effective with it. Your skills in each of these categories are a numerical value from 1-100. So you should see something pop up on the screen when you are using your one-hander that shows you one-handed skill level increasing.
If you wnat to play as a thief character than you need to play that way, sneak up on people, use daggers, alchemy for poisons, light armor, archery things like that. Your skills will increase in those areas and you will be more effective the more you do those. Remember to put the perks in the areas that you are using.
Spells will not automatically come to you. You need to usually purchase them or read them in a book. You can buy equipment that suits your playstyle or pick up the loot from creatures or people you kill. Every city appears to have a vendor or something of that nature that you can buy equipment from. Or you can craft your own by taking on smithing.
The game is pretty cool in the respect that you aren't confined by class archetypes. If you want a toon that wears heavy armor, casts spells, and uses stealth, you can. If you to use a dagger and shield and wear mage armor and cast fire spells at people you can do that too. My suggestion is to pick up the strategy guide or go to the Skyrim wiki and read up on the game a bit. It helps alot. The manual is garbage really.Comment

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
How's everyone doing in terms of money? I've got like 34,000 gold, but nothing to spend it on. I have all the best crap I can find atm, and shops still sell outdated crap most of the time. I've had the same armor and weapons for like 6 levels now, and none of the enemy's, drops or treasures are any better. I'm starting to see some ebony stuff here and there, but it's still very rare.-Ohio State-

Wondering if you have to move the main story along for shops and towns to get better gear.Comment

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I'm ridiculously frugal in this game, if I don't need it, I don't buy it, so a house is low priority.
At this point I think I'm at the threshold of when new equipment should start showing up soon(then again I found the next level of armors boots like 4 levels ago and haven't seen another piece yet), so I don't want to start enchanting stuff that will be obsolete soon, plus I'm crap at enchanting. I almost wish I was a smith so I could just forge the stuff haha.-Ohio State-

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I thought I did good saving just enough money for the 5,000 Gold house. I was tired of always being over encumbered, but you never know when you may need some of this stuff
I wasn't packing around candlesticks and pots, but the dragon scales & bones.... you just never know.
Right now I have around 1800 gold or so. THen again, I've only gotten to play the 1 1/2 days. Can't wait til tomorrowTwitter - WTF_OS

Been Grinding Smithing.
SpoilerSo I have been grinding smithing by making iron daggers, every 5 daggers or so is a new level and it only costs 1 leather strip + 1 iron ignot. Got to level 80 in about 2-3 hours. It would go much faster if I wasnt broke."Good music transcends all physical limits, it's more then something you hear, it's something that you feel, when the author, experience, and passion is real" - Murs (And this is for)Comment

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
No doubt. I think I had every house in Oblivion, since I try not to fast travel, I liked to have one close enough to every "keep". In my limited playtime w/ Skyrim, I still haven't visited all of the towns/cities. Probably 4-5 of them are all that I've seen.
Re: Smithing... That's what I intend to do as well. Do you ever get to the point where you don't need the grindstone, etc for smithing, ala oblivion where you can upgrade w a simple hammer that you've found somewhere?Twitter - WTF_OS

I make frequent trips to markets and sell all my loot, So I'm rarely in a position where it's an issue. I also have a companion/pack mule/decoy for back up storage just in case.

Oh yeah... I have a horse too. Forgot about that. I can't recall where I bought it at... but if I remember, I'll tell you where NOT to buy one. This thing is a flat out turd. At this point I'm hoping a dragon swoops down and puts him out of his miseryTwitter - WTF_OS

Bows are way overpowered it seems lmao. The brotherhood quest or overall theme at the guild creeps me out man. Especially the whole high mother casket thing. YeshLast edited by kingkilla56; 11-15-2011, 05:33 PM.Comment

Duuuude! Thanks man
That conjure perk I was looking at the conjure constellation and I was sort of waiting to "unlock" something, but just playing through the game, nothing was unlocking so I knew I had to be missing something. Im going to see what I can buy/learn and look around some of these towns. I have been conditioned from something like warcraft where you dont really purchase stuff from vendors, but I guess in a single person campaign type game, thats sort of the point lol.Comment
