You basically have to get into the Jarl's favor. In Whiterun, that happens as soon as you kill that first dragon. After that you don't have to progress the main story line at all.

Found out something new and awesome yesterday. When you upgrade the gear on your companions, you can send them away and later go get them again they will still have the equipment you gave them. Very good deal. I'll gear them all out differently according to my needs and desires. Off the top are their any mage companions? Don't tell me who exactly I just want to know if there are any.

I was sitting on about 50k so I went and bought the house in Markath and decked it out. Sick crib, alchemy and enchanting lab right next to each other. Weapon and armor displays. Only thing I'm missing is a backyard with a smithy, but it's cool. I spent about an hour, no lie, trying to get that Golden Claw that I rescued for and subsequently stole from the guy at the beginning of the game to stand up straight.

What sucks about trying to decorate your house manually, when you exit and come back, it looks like a tornado whipped through your house.

I spent some time setting up my beer and wine cabinet with a bunch of different bottles I had hoarded only to come back later and find them scattered all over the dining room. The corner where I had set up my musical instruments looked like Jimi Hendrix had visited and had his way with them.

I don't know if you guys think having a companion is bad when it comes to getting in the way, try that + a dog following you as well and it gets real fun. Every time I tried to arch anything one of them would creep in the way, hell the dog would actually push me and screw up my aim. Not to mention all the blocked door ways and cramped corridors. One way halls are are a gamble.

At least They're good for cannon fodder still though.

I'm goin to go through a second play through as a Mage and from what I'm seeing it's all based on what you want to wear, I've seen heavy, hide, leather, robes that all can regen magic, boost destruction spells, etc. Plus with the disenchanted, rechant options you could deck your Mage out with heavy armor, enchant the armor then be a walking tank. There's so many ways to go about it, that's the beauty of Skyrim.

A big factor for mages when picking armor is movement speed. If you're trying to run away/keep your distance from a tough opponent while wearing heavy, good luck. Both light armor and heavy armor trees do have a perk that removes all weight and movement penalties though. I think they are at skill rating 50 for light and 70 for heavy.

Once those perks are obtained a heavy armored mage could be a kick *** tank mage. It'd just take them longer to get the perk.

I'm sorry, but being evil in this game is just soooooo much more fun. Right now I'm having a blast playing a maladjusted Orc psycho with a hair trigger temper. Anyone who gives me an attitude is as good as dead. In Riverwood, the poor blacksmith's wife got it when she told me she was "spoken for". Big mistake, lady.

Who else here wants to run about 4 different characters just to experience the game in different ways?

I am having a blast playing as my rogue wood elf, but I cant help but want to play also as a mage/ conjurer or tank of a nord. So many different options. I may put more time into this game than any game I have ever played before.
