I also did the iron dagger smithing trick last night and leveled smithing up to around 89. It's nice having my Elven bow upgraded so much now. I only had to kill 2 people last night without my bow. I spent around 8000 gold getting my smithing leveled up though lol.

Hell no......buy yourself a pick axe and mine the ore yourself for free. OR you can just steal it from the forge in River Wood, Solitude and Riften. Solituted and Riften got houses FULL of Iron and Steel ore.

Far as leather...I kill every deer and moose I come across and just get my leather from them.

Frost bears, frost trolls, snow cats, and I pretty much use all my potions on the way up. All of a sudden the game says I'm ready for these beasts? I'm now scared to go anywhere!
Once you do the Greybeards quest, the crap hits the fan. You going to see dragons everywhere and over all just more powerful creatures period. I see so many dragons, bears and saber tooth tigers now it isn't even funny.

So I advise you to get good in smitting and make you some steel plate, dwarven or elven armor. And get good at making potions, much cheaper to make your own then buying.

    And FYI for everybody.........

Best 2 handed weapon far as damage is the war hammer.

Best single handed weapon is the mace.

I'm level 100 smitting now, all my stuff is legendary status. I got a nice little side job going too. I make steel plate legendary armor and sell it for 530 gold a pop. I also make fancy jewelry and sell it for 800 gold a pop.

      k. finally got Skyrim. can't be productive at life now.. annyways.

I'm pretty new to this type of game. Soo, should i try to focus on One-Handed or Two-Handed or can I just roll with both and get along fine. I really like switching it up but I hate to just be average at both.. I'm a beast of a Nord on my first play through by the way- lowly level 5 at the moment. I'm also having a difficult time deciding b/w the Heavy & Light Armor route too.. Ahh too many decisions. haha. I also wouldn't mind doing a little hunting with the bow & arrow, which has me thinking I should go with the light armor route.

Man, I can't wait to make another couple characters..

Can't go wrong either way far as 1 handed or 2 handed. Both have cool looking kill animations. I tried both.....

Sure it looked great walking around with an axe in each hand or just doing the shield & sword route. However, war hammer is just awesome, 2 handed weapons do more damage.

So if you going the one handed route, you going to need some good armor because you going to be taking more hits since it will take you longer to kill people.

If you a mage or long range type of fighter, rock the lighter stuff. If you like being at the front line, rock the heavier stuff.

        OR

Give your companion heavy armor and make them fight in the front while you chill in the back. The possibilities are endless.

I did the same thing when fighting Giants on my first guy. Come in, smack them once, then sit from a distance and use a weak novice fire spell. They died... eventually.

They are also the slowest at attacking. Maces/warhammers are high damage/slow speed, swords are low damage/high speed, and axes are in the middle.

josef, honestly your best bet is to just play for a little while until you start to get a good grip on the mechanics of the game. That way you can decide how you want your character to be and which weapons you favor. GMSS prefers the warhammers, I personally like being a "cloak and dagger" type player. A lot of it is personal preference and getting a handle on how the game operates concerning skills, perks, and all the various items to play with.

I finally got rid of that weird ice effect around my feet. That mess was so annoying. Turns out it came from an Ice Wraith and somehow one of it's spell effects got attached to me. Had to use the 'console' to remove it though, so no help for console users if it does affect you guys.

Madskillz hit the nail on the head. I choose a Redguard to start. At the start they have the benefit of one handed weapons over two handed. Having never played the an Elder Scrolls game before, I naturally fell into the mold of two handed, heavy armor, little to no magic guy. I want to be in the thick of the fight swinging my Greatsword, and Wuuthrad. So I now have a warrior that is great in a fight, with some side skill in archery. Just started to enchant my weapons about 8 levels ago. So, now I love what I have for a character. I can nail you with an arrow from distance to start a fight then come rambling in, with one of my go to weapons to finish the fight. I have high health and stamina to fight but my magic in only at 120, and I have it at that, because when I fight Giants, I will equip a hood that boost magic 30 points, then send a Fire Arconach (sp) at them and fire arrows from a distance.

I kind of agree with the whole not joining too many guilds but I don't feel like restarting. I'm part of 5. I joined the Companions early in the game because I just didn't know what I was doing. That's the only one I kind of regret.

Hopefully they patch that in for consoles.

What's the highest overall rating any of you have achieved so far? My character is in the mid 40's at the moment.

Is that an actual strategy, or just a happy coincidence that I've had happen the last two times I've fought a dragon? Maybe they actually can fly with a hacked up wing and I just got lucky? I'm not 100% on this, that's why I'm asking.

Just random based on the 40+ dragons I've fought. Sometimes they'll stay grounded for the whole fight and I can take them down in 10 seconds, others times they'll take a few hits on the ground and fly back in the air, no matter where I'm hitting them.
