re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Something that ExtremeGamer said that holds true for me when playing. You gotta be/have the right mindset. Tried jumping back on last night for a quick mission and it was disastrous. I tried to just run right through the mission and it was a lesson learned.
Can't wait to leave work in a couple hours to jump back in. Gonna grab a cold one and since i now have a better understanding of what i should be doing i plan on restarting from scratch.

Same here.
I tried to do a mission on my laptop at work.
No mouse....trying to hurry ....the smaller screen. I just didn't get the vibe....and playing with the touch pad is not good.
I'll just settle in tonight on the desktop and have fun again.

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Picked this up. I wasn't really following this too much, but I saw this thread and saw that Firaxis was involved (I had a good time with Civ Revolutions), so I decided to give it a shot. I'm enjoying it a lot. It's really well done. I'd love to see more turn-based games so I hope this does well.
I do have a question about the combat though. How does the fog-of-war work in this game? I've kind of been assuming that the part of the map that is visible is what my soldiers can see, and that enemies won't show up on the map until one of my soldiers spot them. So I've tried to position my soldiers based on this assumption. A couple times however, it seems like aliens have kind of materialized out of thin-air to outflank my guys. Based on where they popped up it seemed like my guys should have seen them. Do the aliens have some kind of teleport ability, or do I just need to be a little more careful?XBL: TancComment

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Jesus ****ing Christ.
Had a 3 hour save going where I lost NO ONE, in fact, I had barely even got hit during this run through.
So I shoot down this UFO, a small one, so I'm thinking "Well, this will be a piece of cake" although I still decided to send quite a few skilled guys.
Searching around the swamp...of North Dakota *Yeah, you figure that one out*, I come across the UFO...which had two commanders in it. Okay, slight problem, but I can handle it.
Then come 6 floaters that were out on patrol. Okay, now I'm in a mess...THEN THE ****ING MUTONS COME!
At this point, I'm wondering how I'm killing anything. My guys were making a valiant effort to eradicate them all, but the commander managed to take over the rookie, who I stupidly gave a laser rifle. My damn sniper, who I wish I could demote, decided now would be a good time to miss every single time I try to hit the mind control commander.
Meanwhile, my left flank was getting wiped out. I managed to take down a flying saucer thingy, two drones, the mind control commander, and all of the floaters before losing 4 guys to the Mutons who were basically having target practice.
The only two who managed to survive were the cowardly sniper and the damn rookie, when I decided to go into the UFO and use that for some cover. I had the sniper stay outside and used the rookie to flank them. It worked, but the cost...ugh.
I love this game, but I was seriously wondering WTF was going on there. I mean, damn, you think that was enough for a small UFO, guys?Too Old To Game Club

PC Patch Notes
"We wanted to let you know the details for the PC update for XCOM: Enemy Unknown that went live today (10/11/12). I've included the notes on this patch below:"
Various visibility/hiding optimizations
Multiplayer text chat support (press J to activate)
Mouse button 4/5 will switch soldiers in the Barracks
ESC hides the movement grid, if you do not want to commit to a move while it is activated
Squad Sight ability optimization
Fixed issue when equipping two grenades with Deep Pockets.
Fixed Rapid Fire sometimes consuming too much ammo.
SHIVs that are damaged will no longer become unusable.
Fixed some hangs/soft crashes in tactical combat.
Replaced software cursor with the operating system cursor to reduce lag and framerate dependence.
Fixed rendering bug which causes some soldier’s hair to appear as if it is rendering on top of environment fog.
1080p movies are now used at all times on the PC.Joshua:

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Thought I was doing good keeping guys alive. That was until the first terror mission. I was so dead set on rescuing the civilians that Stallone and Schwarzenegger got taken out. Poor Stallone was slaughtered by a chrysalid (which SUCK by the way).
This game is too good for words. Back to making dough to try and launch satellites over more countries.Comment

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
So after starting my career today I've completed 3 missions with 1 dead. (American)
All the choices and repercussions are simply amazing.
I literally take 20-30 minutes a turn as I'm so freaking afraid of getting someone killed....
Going to keep going until Yankee game..then back to it after the game.Joshua:
