    Re: The Order: 1886

I wasn't planning on getting this at launch anyway (partially remodeling bedroom, so no money available), but the reviews have convinced me to wait for a huge deal ($20 or less). This is a pretty tremendous disappointment, though to be honest I could see this coming from a mile away given the poor preview response this has gotten from day one.

I'm more interested in the fact that Sony would allow reviews to go up before launch, giving people time to cancel their pre-orders. They had to know it would get lousy reviews, right? Again, it previewed poorly and had developed bad word-of-mouth. I wonder how many sales were lost today based on this decision ...

The outcry would have shifted squarely to the embargo if they made the unusual move of requiring everyone to wait until the release to allow the media to talk.

As bad as everything this week was, that is one of the few things that could have made it a lot worse.

As I continue to play and enjoy the game, I have been surprised at some of the thoughts here. I went to metacritic expecting to see ALL the terrible reviews. No one metiuoned the 20 or so positive ones and the pathetic ones that are just ridiculous in terms of score.

Seems that the "let down" is the problem. Super high expectations and a lack of innovation. Im not defending any of it. But the game definitely has some good moments and incredible visuals and sound.

Yeah that would have been so much worse. Right now it's just a game that's getting bad reviews. If they would have denied early reviews, they would still have a game with bad reviews plus the idea that they were being deceitful with a product they knew was bad.

The problem is the hype nowadays. All this money they put into marketing.

              That's an excellent question.

And like I said on the last page, there's a few possible casualties here that really bum me out.

              1. I LOVE single player story-centric games. Game time is of no concern to me at all. As a result of this mess, games "like" this one will undoubtedly have a harder time getting greenlit. We all lose there. I hope everyone likes fetch quests, fluff upgrading and tacked on multiplayer! Sony will lose money big time on this game and my preferred gaming-types will suffer for it.

              2. By all accounts, this story-centric game ends on a cliff hanger. Ready At Dawn made a huge mistake there! I hope SO HARD that they at least wrap this story up over some single player DLC (which now I have to doubt would ever see the light of day unless it's WAY into development). So great! A new story driven game based on a new IP ends with sequel bait??? Damn. How can the story even feel fulfilling now if all of the loose ends are left loose when the credits roll. With this type of reception, a follow up is highly doubtful.

Again, I'm buying this game and I will post back after I play it. I'm just incredibly let down from everything I'm hearing.

Cancelled my paid-in-full pre-order and put it towards Bloodborne. Put this game #1 in my queue at GameFly. Seems like the smart play for me personally.

Will be going to Best Buy to get in on the the GCU deal, so thanks for the info!

I'll still get this eventually but I'm going to wait til it hits $30 or maybe $40. Don't care if the game is short but the reviews definitely make it sound like I don't need to be in any hurry to play it. If I didn't have a huge backlog I might grab it now but instead I'll clear some of that and grab this on sale later.

                      1. I'm the same way. I'm an old school single player gamer. I have no interest in multi-player or co-op crap and I especially hate it when either of those elements are implemented into the single player story campaign. Unity is a good example of this in regards to the co-op but thankfully, all the co-op stuff can be played in "private" (single player) but at the same time, it's still a negative.

Of course, there's one thing that I have noticed nowadays and that's the fact that most story based games are more times linear than open world. For some reason, open world games don't have as much focus on the story compared to linear games since there's so much other stuff in the game.

I do see gaming going more towards online, multi-player and co-op with each game, franchise and generation which im not a fan of but I figure that once this happens (or consoles going all digital, whichever happens first), im done with gaming.

                      2. One review I read said the story and ending was perfectly done. I don't know if that means it ends on a cliffhanger or not but at the same time, im hoping for a sequel as I want this to be a new franchise IP for Sony. I'm pretty sure that if there's going to be a sequel it's going to be based on sales, not critic reviews and scores and that's if the decision hasn't been made already. If the game does end on a cliffhanger, then im assuming that there will be a sequel down the line as more times than not, a sequel is usually already determined while the first game is being developed.

One thing that I don't want is - DLC. I'm not a collector and once im finished with a game, I trade it in towards my next game (or in this case, eventually an Xbox One). I'm tempted to buy The Evil Within again because of the three upcoming story DLC packs but at the same time, I already deleted the save game files because I wasn't expecting to be interested in the DLC.

I rather wait five more years for a far better sequel than some crappy DLC that's just being developed and released just to conclude the game.

I'm buying the game tomorrow as well but im still looking forward to playing through the game as reviews and scores never influence me one way or the other. Some of my favorite games were reviewed and scored low to bad. Haven't lost interest whatsoever and while I stopped hyping myself up with high expectations after Uncharted 3 and Hitman Absolution, im still hyped enough to where I want to play the game and see how it is for myself as opposed to reading what others think.

If anything, I think that The Order is going to turn out to be an "underrated" game because I see those who just want to play the game no matter what enjoy it more and think that it's better than what it's currently receiving.

It's crazy how starkly different these reviews are to the Kotaku/Polygon/IGN/Gamespot/Gameinformer/Eurogamer's of the world.

                        I appreciate the links!

THIS. Sony has practically wallpapered their services with this game. They're banking huge on it as their first big exclusive for the year, and it's becoming clear that it was a mistake. (Of course, we all know that quality has little bearing on success. It could sell big numbers based on the hype alone.)

Personally I think all the negative talk over the last week or so over the game's length, coupled with nearly universal negative reviews is gonna seriously hurt this game sales-wise. When I cancelled my pre-order at GameStop today the guy on the phone told me I was the 5th to do so far today. He specifically mentioned the Kotaku and IGN reviews being brought up.

I think this is gonna be a big story and that you may end up hearing about layoffs down the road at the studio because the game under-performed. Yup, I think this one is gonna leave a mark. Bummer.
