This youtube series was an enormous help to me. It's a great guide, informative, and entertaining as well. Just watch these videos through and it'll help a hell of a lot with your enjoyment of the game.

I used them too when I started playing CK2. The videos really are great they are a good starting point for a new player.

1150 AD now.

I gained one province down south as it was just an independent count, and it made my southern border look a bit nicer. my Vassel King of Finland keeps on expanding making my northern border bigger as he is claiming all the De Jure lands of Finland.

Poland expanding some more into Denmark and Norway. I did have to come to the aid of Poland when Francia declared a holy war on them, that was a tough fight. despite Russia looking bigger on the map, I'm actually half the size of Francia(or used to be before the HRE broke away, more on that later) when it comes to actual holdings. I have 452 holdings while Francia had nearly 900.

now to Francia. It used to be in control by a Waldensian catholic heresy from the Karling Dynasty. I'm not sure how it happened(I'll have to look into more later), but the Karlings are no longer in charge and the new rulers are normal Catholics and Italians. since they were Catholic, they were able to recreate the Holy Roman Empire, and as such when the Emperor died, the Realm got split up between 2 sons and now there is a separate Francia and HRE, though they are allied as they are same dynasty. didn't take a screen shot, but middle Europe religion map mode is ridiculous. Catholic, Waldensian, and about 2 other heresies are everywhere.

Hungary was in huge trouble from Sunni Muslims who now have control over most of Greece and other old Byzantium lands. I decided to ask Hungary to join their war to help out(I would rather have a Tengri Hungary then a even bigger Sunni empire at my doorstep). They accepted and I treid to help out, but ultimately what saved Hungary was revolts within the Sunni empire(I think it's the Arabian Empire, but Muslim nations go by dynasty names in CKII).

Britannia is getting more aggressive in the Iberian Peninsula. so it seems Norse will take over Spain.

Edit: Also, I found the pope. He is in the southern part of present day Germany with only a single church in his realm.

not really, the Lands in Finland aren't that great, so I still have much more military. I have 20K in Retinue army alone with about another 10K in personal levies. If he starts to take over Sweden and Norway, I might get worried.

most of my other vassals can't rage war outside of Russia by themselves anymore, but Finland is not part of De Jure Russia Empire, so the crown laws don't apply to them it seems.

my biggest vassal is King of Ruthenia. I've had to beat him down a few times already, even though their ruler always likes me, they always seem to be part of the independence faction and try to break away.

made it to 1200 AD today. 50 years of changes.



I don't think I gained any land in these 50 years. I've mostly just defended from invasions and tried to help out Poland who was getting attacked by everyone. as you can see, Poland is no where.

I'm not sure what happen, but there is no King of Poland anymore, the title is gone(can be recreated if someone owns enough land). I fear this may be the end of Poland as I'm sure Francia of any one of the Catholic nations will take all the small Polish rulers.

Amalfi is just about done it seems. they were driven out of Italy by the Shia explosion from the Isalcasid dynasty. The Sunni Idrisid dynasty trying to reunite the Greek/Anatolian provinces, but Byzantium still hanging around trying to come back. Seljuk gained some more land and they are now my only southeastern border.

Britannia lost their lands in Spain due to rebellions and then getting holy warred.



The Religious situation.

Poland was able to spread Slavic to the Norwegian provinces before they had their troubles. the rulers in the Norwegian territories are still Polish culture and Slavic religion though.

Romuva still hanging out in Finland, but only a single count is left as a ruler.

Catholics have control of middle Europe again.

Tengri holding strong with Hungary despite having to defend from Muslim invasions and Catholic Crusades.

though just outside the screenshot, Shia have risen and control most of northern Africa along the Mediterranean coast.



Culture map.

Russian spreads throughout Russia.

Italian spreading to Germany and parts of France as the rulers of Francia and HRE are of Italian culture.

Scottish in Sweden. lol those crazy Scotts.

here is my map 959 AD

I've united Ireland and converted the left over Norse counties to Catholic. I'll be going after Skotland next, but right now I'm trying to wait. I'm in my late 50s so I'll probably be dying soon and with Elective succession, I have a great nominee, he is my top vassal, but for some reason the other vassals keep wanting to select someone else. I had to kill him as he had no titles and I wanted to merge my titles with my vassal's titles.

Not entirely sure how everything will work with that, but from the previous deaths, all titles have been passed, so I'm hoping to get them all in 1 person's hands without having to pay lots of money and fight him to take them away.

Denmark has the south of the UK for now, but most of the counties are occupied, so that may not last long. I just hope Skotland doesn't get them or that they are distracted and I can take over their north.

Brittany has 1 county, Russia has been broken up and doesn't exist.

I have to bide my time for 7 more years when my truces with Skotland and Denmark end. I have a great alliance with Francia and they actually provide troops for my 2 small battles recently. Now I'll just build my army up and do some scheming to help my movement into Skotland.

played another 50 years and the time has come to pay attention to my east and south borders as the Mongols have arrived.

Luckily they invaded the Seljuks, so I had some time. But that would only last for about 20 or so years, after the Ilkhanate took over Persia, then looked north and took over Seljuks and they now border me. In 1241, they invaded Russia(for Cumania). But they would find out that the Russian Empire have quite an army for themselves.

biggest single battle I've had in this entire playthrough so far, 152K Russians versus 115K Mongols. They attempted to attack a small stack of about 12K men I had, but I had the rest of my army on the way, so I was on the defensive and had more troops then they had with reinforcements. The defensive bonuses that Slavics get really saved my butt against the Mongols.

ah, crap. The Golden Horde now invades Russia as I was finally pushing the Ilkhanate back in their territory. I was able to end the war with the Ilkhanate really fast after this, and then collected my armies again to try and hold defensive positions.

The Golden Horde didn't stack all their units into 1 stack, but had several 30-40K stacks. There wasn't as big of a battle like with the Ilkhanate, but this was the decisive battle in the invasion.

78K Russians against 90K Mongols. Once again, I was on defense, so my bonuses really paid off in the end. I was able to finish off their troops and end the Mongol Invasion.

not sure why it was called 4th Mongol invasion of Cumania. The first was Ilkhanate attacking Seljuks, the 2nd was Ilkhante attacking me, 3rd should have been Golden Horde attacking me. not sure where the other one came from, but I guess that it not really important.

Europe in 1250 AD.

Poland reformed and fighting back without any help from me. They have even gained some land in Denmark/Sweden.

Byzantine Empire gaining more land, Hungary lost some land.

Holy Roman Empire took over Francia, then selected Francia as primary title. both are now Primogeniture succession, so this big Empire may stay fro some time unless a bunch of revolts happen. They will be scary.

Ilkhanate started out Old Tengri, but have since converted to the reformed Tengri.

Francia has double the troops that I do, so I would say they do. I may be able to defend myself against them if I can force them to attack my troops so I can use my defensive bonuses.

Ilkhanate have roughly the same amount of troops as me, although I haven't checked since our war, so they could have less now. When they spawn, I believe they invade with free units that don't suffer from attrition and they could have just been using them along with their normal levies when they attacked me.

that is definitely a big reason. Plus Poland is Slavic as well, so I don't really have much cause to go to war(and now that I'm reformed Slavic, I lost the ability to subjugate rulers). for Hungary, I think it would be interesting to see all the reformed pagans converted into EUIV and Hungary is reformed Tengri.

all these big nations have made Crusades, Jihads, and Great Holy Wars impossible though. I don't think a single one has been successful.

should be interesting in EUIV if things keep going the way it is. Norse Britannia, which I think will convert to Great Britain when converted. Huge Catholic France Empire(not sure how the papacy will work in EUIV with Francia controlling Rome though and the pope only in a minor baron church), Russia already formed(and Slavic Pagan), the Umayyads in Spain/Northwest Africa, Mongols in eastern Europe(and they are reformed Tengri), and maybe if the Byzantines can come back, they could play a big role in EUIV as the only Orthodox nation.

I think there is still one more horde invasion left, the Timurids. I've never actually played CKII up to that point, so I have no idea what to expect from them. I believe they usually invade in the south near Persia though(well if it's realistic).

not sure how many OSer are getting it(I pre-ordered it months ago). EUIV seems to be in the top 5-6 right now in steam sales, so it seems to be selling very well for a Paradox game.

In my Russia game, looks like Russia will be getting their first female ruler as the current ruler doesn't have any living sons right now. not that I mind though, as the female heir has a genius son waiting to take over after her(she was married Matrillineally, so her kids are of Rurikid Dynasty). also, she actually has the highest martial ability in the realm, so she could beat down anyone who apposes(too bad she can't lead armies).
