Re: No Man's Sky
Reading that the pre-order ship essentially skips over important parts of resource collecting and crafting. I'm glad I've held back on using it so far. Though there is an annoying pop up every couple minutes reminding you to redeem the damn thing.
Curious what other people decided to do with their first decision
Spoiler
I chose to not have the Atlas direct me. I'm hoping it's not a huge mistake.
Edit. Was able to change direction and went the other way.Last edited by CMH; 08-09-2016, 08:44 AM."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: No Man's Sky
No crashes here.
Just a really chill session for my first several hours with the game, learning how things work and what I'm able to do. Had a little bit of everything happen, from exploring to trading to both ground and space combat. Nothing seemed particularly overwhelming other than the game's immense scope. If you need an hint as to that size, bring up the galactic map once you get in space, go to free exploration mode and head straight for the brightest spot (which I assume to be the core and the end-game). I did this for about 5 minutes and STILL didn't get there, passing who knows how many planets along the way.
I will spoiler tag this part:
SpoilerSo, as you go through exploring the planets you'll run across different races of aliens. Each speak their own language and you're not going to have a clue what they're saying unless you interact with knowledge stones scattered around the planets. Each one gives you a word in their language (sort of like FFX's Al Bhed stuff). The aliens are worth seeking out because a lot of them seem to give you upgrade possibilities for your suit and ship.
Also - seek out Drop Pods. I've found 2 of them while roaming and both have given me suit carrying capacity upgrades (though the 2nd one cost me some units). You're going to find inventory space very limiting once you start mining all the stuff you need to build your equipment, so the extra space comes in very handy.
At least in the beginning, I've seen no need to hold onto the green stuff I find in boxes and such, or materials such as Gold and Aluminum - it all just eats up that precious carrying capacity I was talking about. They sell pretty well at terminals and can be a good source of income when starting out.
Remember to upload any new discoveries you make from the pause screen (even if you don't re-name them) - you get units (basically currency) for every one.Comment

SpoilerThat was the broken pod looking thing right at the start next to your ship, right? I figured that was gonna be some kind of handholding thing and just left it alone (then wandered and got lost in the aforementioned cave and almost died....lol).
Yeah the ship redeem thing is annoying. Now that I've built up my starting ship to that level I might just redeem it to get rid of that message...Comment

Re: No Man's Sky
Can't believe how stunningly beautiful and interesting the game is. Doesn't feel totally procedural. The variety of planetary and interstellar landscapes has surprised me so far.
The interactive scale is also something that blows my mind, and every inch can have something useful or interesting.
I love how connected to the world you feel with discovery and naming.
The moment you exit the planet for the first time is a legendary gaming moment for me.
Music is also as good as I've encountered in a game, and I'm often the guy who turns the music off completely in fps games.
One other thing that's been discussed already, man does that stupid redeem ship thing bug me. I don't want it, and I don't want to redeem it now. Can't I just acknowledge it?
As a jaded gamer I can't express how impressed and how fresh it feels. Amazing accomplishment by Hello Games in my mind.
Now we just need a NMS photography thread.Comment

Re: No Man's Sky
I have a few appointments this morning, but I'll be home later and jump on. I know people like to watch streams, so I'll probably steam my first time playing for a bit if anyone is interested and I don't forget.

Re: No Man's Sky
My copy is waiting for me at Best Buy. Plan is to pick it up on my lunch break, race home, and pop it in to let it install so that it'll be ready when I get home from work. I'm so tempted to skip tonight's kickball game (I play in a kickball league for fun) to dive into this.NFL: Bills

Re: No Man's Sky
Was planning to do the Madden trade-in today, but I don't want to risk being late back to work lol. I have a meeting right after lunch and the people at Best Buy always struggle to figure out how to do the Madden trade-in so I think I'll just go back to Best Buy another day this week to do that.NFL: Bills

Re: No Man's Sky
I love how the game isn't too hand-holding. It's not original Minecraft or Dark Souls, but it's not even close to a Ubisoft game.
The disorientation necessitating experimentation is a great component of the narrative, but I do worry how it will be received by a more general audience.Last edited by bad_philanthropy; 08-09-2016, 08:40 AM.Comment

I saw people on Reddit complaining that if you redeem the preorder ship, it basically skips the tutorials so you don't really know what you're doing.NFL: Bills
