For music it's pretty mediocre, but to me Airpods don't sound $200 better either.
To be fair, every time I originally would buy a pair they were kind of bundled with a new phone purchase or something of the sort.

I definitely crave comfort, noise canceling properties, case charging/finding capabilities (though where has that gotten me?), and audio quality. But you're right, I ain't shelling out that much for another pair if I can't seem to have any real luck with them.

I'm just going to do the right amount of research and go as cheap as possible.

I roll with the AirPods every day. I’m not even a super brand or Apple everything guy, but I have an iPhone so for ease it made sense to go for their version. I know in my gut having these in all day probably isn’t great, but I feel better about it being an Apple product then some random knockoff brand from Amazon.

For lighter, less intense use I’m sure a cheap pair would be fine. Having the AirPods case on me is as much a habit as grabbing phone keys and wallet. One thing I’ve done is grab a bright colored case so when I inevitably leave them around they’re a bit easier to find when it’s a bright red or orange.

I get the uses and why people love earbuds, but at least for home and entertainment use I still love a classic pair of studio headphones with a cable.

Oh, absolutely. I have invested thousands of dollars in studio headphone equipment for my home setup. Nothing gets better.

I got a pair of headphones with a changeable aux cord since we all know those cords get bent/damaged after using them for months or years.

Only one or two cables have been damaged since I got the headphones, but the headphones have lasted me about 7 years so far.

Not bad for what turned out to be a $40 prime day purchase (back when prime day actually had real deals).

I can't stand in-ear earbuds, mostly over-ear headphones for me. At home I'm on year 3 or 4 of my Sony's M3. Got some Beats by Dre Studio Pro for the gym because the internet said they were the least likely to fall off (in 2 years, so far so good). I do have a pair of Shokz open earbuds strictly in case the need arises on the road.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I usually don't use earbuds except for when I'm traveling but man, when I do I need strong noise canceling and long battery life. I need am upgrade because it's been several years but there's so many options it's overwhelming. Everything either has connectivity issues or build quality issues or isn't that good on the noise canceling or is a battery drain or whatever else.

I just hate the notion that your earbuds may die midflight and you're SOL on the noise front but that's where we are on the tech front. What can you do.

only reason I've moved on from wired headphones is the freedom to walk around

I have buds for podcasts, and some Crushers for music because I'm a bass honk. Also, this goes back to the weather thread (I'm all over the place lately), I'm not a thunder fan, I put the noise cancelers on just for that, it was wild the other day, needed a reprieve

Nothing grinds my gears anymore, after Spravato.

I was going to write a big post on here about it all, then I thought why bother, I guess that shows I'm changed eh?

Lol, if anyone is interested in my journey message me please.

sticky pain patches that immediately stick to themselves before you can apply them, then you try to fix it and they get stuck to the other side. Then you hurt your back even more reaching around trying to get everything situated
