Re: How dare police officers and their family members follow the law

i have a rule for my self, i never write any tickets that unless it matters for safety. sure i've stopped people for all kinds of reasons, some what we call chicken s#it reasons, but we are doing it for your safety. We call those investigative stops. To keep the street safe for you guys.

That's what I did. Folks, there is a warrant log at each police station. You would not believe how many people have outstanding warrants for their arrests. Take the city I worked in, around 28,000. I would say the warrant log had several thousand names. People from all over the county. So, if I thought there might be a guy with a warrant I would use every chicks&*t legal way to pull them over, for example, a light out over their rear license plate.
If the people were cool in the car, no ticket. We have to be able to use these tools.

Then you get to other things like DUI, etc...would people not ticket for those?

I think you will find this particular mindset has changed. It was our policy that if you got pulled over for drunk driving, oh well, good luck.

The reason being is the liabilty for the department. Let's say I stop a Highway Patrolman.
He blows an .08. He's getting arrested. If I let him go, even let someone come and pick him up and take him home and he goes out later and drives, kills someone....I can kiss my arse goodbye and will be held legally responsible. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but the word has been put out and you'd have to be a friggin' loon to let a DUI cop walk.

And trust me. I know there are people like you out there. And even when I put my life in danger for you, you can still call me an arsehole. Water off my back, but I'm glad I'm retired and don't have to listen to this kind of crap from people like you.

Had to laugh at a hispanic gang member one night.

        "You're only stopping me because I'm a Mexican". (inferring I'm a racist)

        My retort was.....

"Tell my Mexican wife that." He had nothing else to say.

Re: How dare police officers and their family members follow the law

Your very welcome. I dealt with mostly appreciative citizens, even though almost 100% of the time I was sent on calls that dealt with something extremely negative.

I once told a rookie cop who LOVED to write tickets this....

"Do you want every citizen in this town to have their own personal ticket from you? Wait to you get the sh#4 kicked out of you one night. You won't see one citizen come to your defense."

            It opened his eyes.

Re: How dare police officers and their family members follow the law

As far as cops pulling over "others" and letting them go... its true as I have seen it. While enlisted in the Marines I got pulled over and showed my military ID and was let go on the spot. While enlisting my Staff Sergeant got pulled over and was let go on the spot as well. Same thing happened to a buddy of mine as he claims.

Now if I was a cop I would have done the same thing. It would just seem bad giving someone serving your country a ticket for speeding or some other minor violation. Unless of course you're from the Navy... kidding.

                EDIT:

Those stating cops are two faced for letting military/fire fighters/cops go... well its easy to sit there and make that judgment based on never putting your life on the line like all these brave men and women do. Am I saying its right? No but I'm not sayings it wrong either, depending on the infraction.

There are crooked people in all organizations... bad cops... I've even met some bad Marines. But don't label an entire group because of a few bad people. Remember, they're doing this for you.

Well what about a surgeon? He or She certainly saves lives, it would be pretty uncool to give them a ticket. Or how about that guy who works for the electrical company...without people like him, we would freeze in the winter. Police and Military are important and appreciated, but there are alot of other people that make some pretty important contributions to our society....so where do we draw the line?

                    I think that's a very good point. I guess it's subjective.

Re: How dare police officers and their family members follow the law

some cops suck... i remember I was 16 and got pulled over for doing something I saw everyone else doing (very stupid).. I cut through a "do not enter" sign I saw everyone passing through.. so I did it... then I hear sirens and I'm like "oh boy..." in order for me to have pulled over when he caught up to me, I had to.. cut through another sign to you know, park it... this cop had a field day with me.. he gave me a ticket for having red lights on my hood (where the washer fluid comes out) in broad day light.. a ticket for this air freshener I had lol he said it was obstruction of view... a ticket for cutting through the sign I cut through in the first place and another ticket for the other sign I cut through to pull over

i said "i had to pull over there, if I would have turned, you probably would have assumed that I was running from you" and he said "well... you were going to cut through it anyway"

He also gave me a ticket for only having a junior license... and threatened to impound my car if I didn't get someone to come pick the car up on the spot.

I hated cops from that point on..

However, on the parkway... i had to take a piss bad, so I was driving a little faster than usual but didn't notice that the car i was kind of "riding" in front of me was an unmarked cop car, so he pulled me over and let me know that I was driving a little reckless.. i told him the problem and he let me go and said "just slow down"

Some cops are cool, some are douches....

I gotta start being more careful on the parkway though... I'm starting to see "taxi cabs" pull people over now

cops usually don't write Dr's and Nurses tickets because they may be the one saving their life one day. At least the cops I know. Basically other Law enforcement officers, firefighters, Dr's and nurses get a warning for speeding.

Cops should definitely not write me a ticket because I could be fixing their computer some day.

You see, this is what I have a problem with. A cop should know the standard. IF ANYTHING he should be more likely to get the ticket. I just don't get it.
"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."

My quality of life would seriously take a hit if my computer was out of commission. I woudn't be able to come on OS, or get Heel's CHoops sliders....it would be a disaster.

Cops shouldn't give actors, musicans, or athletes a ticket either because they entertain them.
