Re: How dare police officers and their family members follow the law

I once got a ticket (from a female cop) for performing an "illegal right turn" to avoid the car in front of me who couldn't decide if they wanted to turn into their driveway or keep going straight. She ignored the fact that I was in a hurry to visit my great-grandmother in the nursing home (which was about 3 minutes away from where the fiasco took place) whom had just had a stroke and I was rushing to check on her.

So, yeah, I was a bit salty.

How would a cop know if someone is a surgeon or doctor? I wouldn't let those people go... they contribute yes but its not the same risk. As I said, I wouldn't give a infraction to a military person because I come from that background.

If one got pulled over drunk then of course it would be jail time or whatever the penalty for that is... I'm just referring to minor violations.

In Illinois cops will let go military from I know, Marines anyway... personal experience and from what others told me. In a city like San Diego where there are tons of Marines I heard cops aren't nearly as easy. I'm sure factoring small suburban areas and big cities will make a difference as well.

We sort of are talking about apples and oranges. Drunk driving is not goind 35 in a 25 mph zone. You're right about that, and you are also right about San Diego. Don't think for a minute no military personnel get tickets. That's just not true.

Let's face it, it's a necessary evil. The same people who scream "where are the cops when you need them", scream when the cops are doing their job writing them a ticket. Cops at that time need to be somewhere else, "where they're needed".

Yeah...I understand the courtesy given to fellow cops...Just can't help but feel a little annoyed when you think of a case that a ticket is all ready written, the guy goes "Oh, I'm a cop" and gets the ticket ripped up. Just human nature not to like that

I think it is plenty fair. They risk their lives every day to make sure we are safe, so if they get off a speeding ticket, more power too them. It's bad enough they are very under paid for what they do.

I agree, I don't think its that big of a deal.

If one of you were a cop or military and got pulled over and a cop said oh, you're a Marine... have a good night sir and walks away. Would you stop him and say hey, I don't deserve this special "treatment?"

Wouldn't expect them to do that but I also don't expect them to whine about it if they don't get special treatment.

I do agree that creating a website whining about not getting the special treatment is pretty lame.

It's against the law to tear up a ticket once it's written. That happens in movies. You write a ticket, you'd better account for it.

They are making fools of themselves.

Something to consider. I worked ten hour shifts. Do you know how many shifts I went through, handled some tough, tough calls, and not one citizen was unhappy with what I did? The bad guy was, but not the citizen. Multiply that by many cops during the day, but let one joker do something stupid or against the law, and we all get steretyped, but, that's life.

I NEVER got a citizen complaint in all my years. I spent my entire career responding to nothing but trouble. Not once did I receive a call from my dispatcher that I was to go to a house that was having no problems, they just wanted to say "hi". It's a tough job.

Stereotyping happens...sucks but the bad apples always ruin it for everyone.

Hey, if I ever called 911 and asked for a cop to be sent out so I could chat and say "Hi" I'd be billed 200+ bucks and charged for abuse of 911

Amusing stereotype note, my dad just started teaching high school...whenever I talk to him I'll ask if he banged any of his hot female students lately

We call those investigative stops. To keep the street safe for you guys.

That's what I did. Folks, there is a warrant log at each police station. You would not believe how many people have outstanding warrants for their arrests. Take the city I worked in, around 28,000. I would say the warrant log had several thousand names. People from all over the county. So, if I thought there might be a guy with a warrant I would use every chicks&*t legal way to pull them over, for example, a light out over their rear license plate.
If the people were cool in the car, no ticket. We have to be able to use these tools.

How would you know or what was a clue that the guy might have a warrant, if he was just driving his/her car?

I know where you are going with this and he never said he pulled people over for no reason........anything that warrants a stop. Speeding, no tag, busted tail light etc. You pull them over and ask for their license and run it. If it comes back clean you give them a warning. If they have a warrant you arrest them.
