Even when I pick up a pizza there's that dreaded tip line. I typically always tip even if I pick it up. I'll give $2-3...so not the usual tip.

It's my guilty conscience and the psychology behind is designed for me.

You should if it's a large order because it takes time to prepare. Time that those people probably aren't getting paid for.

Picking up a pizza, I don't think it's necessary at all. I won't judge you on that. But having worked that job, I always leave a few bucks. You can see it light them up when they get that unexpected couple of dollars. A couple bucks would pay for my dinner at work.

To me, it's just an extra $2 or $3. I'm already spending $10-$15, even while I'm still trying to make ends meet, it's worth it.

Who's prepping a take-out order that's not getting paid for it?

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

I meant if it's a server (some places have dedicated to-go people, some don't), they're getting paid the $2.50 or whatever as a server.

I served at Friendly's and it was a pain in the *** to do to-go and your tables suffered because of it. It didn't help we were always short staffed and the restaurant was a POS in general. When I worked at Olive Garden, they pretty much always have a to-go person on. At Applebee's, there was only one on when it was expected to be busy.

It probably doesn't help that every restaurant is different.

Really, it's because I've done the job that I leave that tip on take-out. I can spare a few bucks to make someone's day. That's my mindset.

If it were a massive order that required prep, I would tip. If I'm just picking up some buffalo wings, probably not. I feel like I might as well start tipping at Mcdonalds if I start doing that.

Next level, try tipping the waiter as soon as you arrive at the restaurant with a 10 or 20 spot depending on where you are at. You would be surprised at how good of service you get when you do that. I've done it a few times. It gives the suggestion that yes, you know they will deliver and give you top notch service. when doing this I have yet to be disappointed.

In general I tip well and usually get great service anywhere I go. They give free drinks, don't charge you for appetizers etc. Being nice and tipping well regardless always pays off. Don't be a shady Mccoy.

If you have disposable income and don't have a tight budget, yeah, maybe that's an option.

Not an option for this family of 5.

I have no problem giving a great tip if the waiter/waitress is really good. My wife and I went out to dinner for our anniversary last night and had a fantastic waitress. Very good the whole time we were there. When I got the bill, I noticed an error on it but didn't say anything. She actually came back with it and told me she saw she made an error and fixed it. She was already getting a good tip but that move guaranteed it. Had no problem whatsover personally handing her a $10 tip.

I don't know why exactly, but as a waiter it really bothers me when people do this. My job is pretty all-encompassing and I seat people also and every once in a while they'll tip me a bit while I sit them. It really just kind of irks me.

Maybe its the idea I feel they're doing it to "guarantee" special treatment/higher service. I firmly work by the idea of treating everyone the same way. Whether they're a regular that leaves $20 or someone that you can tell is a ~5. Don't treat anyone extra, just treat everyone well. And the tip-before-service thing is them saying "you should treat me better".

That's my view on it, I suppose.

As a fellow waiter/bartender, I agree. Tipping before probably won't make me treat you any better unless you put down a large amount of money.

Also, at my old restaurant, as the bartender I took care of to-go orders - which meant I had to leave the bar and my guests to go to the kitchen to get everything together and then pack up everything.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

I start at about 15-18 ish.

If you do a great job, you get around 25%.

If you suck at life, and make a ton of mistakes, you get 10%.

The smallest tip I've ever left was 3 cents, for absolutely terrible service. That only happened once. Other than that, I think the smallest I've ever left was about 15%

I get servers make below minimum wage. But they also chose to be servers. No one put a gun to their head and forced them to take that job. As such, I expect you to work for the money I give you.

And I don't have a moral problem with people that don't tip. It's not their fault that the system is screwed up, and it's not their fault a server is getting paid 4.50 an hour.

And I'm a server myself, before anyone asks...

As for tipping in other situations/jobs, I usually have arbitrary amounts I tip as flat rates, depending on the job. It doesn't make sense to tip delivery guys 20%, for example, because the amount you paid has no relationship to the amount of work they did. If you only ordered a 2 dollar slice of pizza, and they drove 10 blocks and brought it to your door, is it really appropriate to tip him 40 cents?

I usually do about 2-3 dollars for deliveries (more in bad weather or something), about 4-5 bucks for barbershops. Everyone else gets a nice hug.

Well it was just an example, but there are a lot of places in New York City that deliver pizza by the slice.

Tipping isn't a thing in Japan.

Some Japanese even get offended/upset if you try tipping them.

There are a few exceptions. Some Americans own businesses here, but if it's a Japanese employee I tend to not tip. I accidentally offended a lady at a Ramen joint when I first got here.

If it's a delivery service I still tip. If I'm out at a local bar and I'm craving some Gyoza, I don't mind tipping for the convenience.
