      Re: OS Pups Thread!

My oldest dog Miley, 10 years old, has had it rough the past couple months. She is just about completely blind due to cataracts in one eye and a detached retina in the other, just was diagnosed with heart failure, and a tumor in her mouth. It's been a mess. Because she is such a fit dog, she didn't show any signs of heart failure until a heart murmur was discovered at her annual vet visit. Her heart doctor said it was good it was caught because her heart was in such bad shape it could have killed her within a year. Luckily the heart issues are under control due to medicine and as long as it stays strong I'll get her cataracts surgery to restore vision to her eye. The tumor in her mouth has been an ordeal though, because of her heart I didn't want to rush into surgery so we tried chemo. This was not good, she had a really bad reaction to it a couple weeks ago and we nearly lost her. But she recovered fully from it and yesterday had the surgery to remove the tumor from her mouth. They had to remove the front part of her lower jaw, so no more front teeth! But she's past that now and hopefully results come back that all of the tumor was removed. No toys for a few weeks until her mouth heals up, that'll be interesting!

Anyway, here's a pic of Miley we took earlier this week. As you can see, she's still a happy and active pup even with the medical issues. Hopefully now that the surgery is behind us, things will start going good again. Miley was my first dog, so she'll always be something extra special to me.

Congrats on the GSD purchase Captain - I love these dogs... they're super smart but she will challenge you so you have to be loving but firm as well.

On side note, my buddy went into surgery yesterday. He had a cyst removed that was under his ear. Now at first it wasn't an issue but it got bigger, he kept scratching at it and it kept leaking\breaking. Since this was right by his head, I had no choice. So fast forward to today and:

The cone! - he's doing much better today than post surgery but he seems so depressed in that thing. I bought a Comfy Cone from Amazon and it will arrive tomorrow so I hope that is better.

If anyone has any tips with the cone, let me know. He gets the stitches removed 9/17 so everyday we get closer.

My dog Miley is in her first ever cone right now and she hates it too! Don't have any advice, just commiserating with you. Luckily Miley hasn't been itching at her mouth where her stitches are, so I have been taking the cone off when she eats and goes outside to do her business. She won't do anything but lay on the couch when it is on.

Same here... he just seems depressed and wants to sleep.

This is weird, and I know it's just a coincidence, but my dog has a little squeaky snowflake toy that he always ignores in favor of his other toys. Today, we had snow, and out of the blue he dug out the snowflake toy and was all about playing around with it

I know it was just a random happenstance but it was still pretty cool to me haha

I know most of you on this thread understand, so if you don't mind me venting for a minute ...

It's been a pretty agonzing week so far. My Cocker Spaniel, Rocky, has had an odd limp with his right front leg the last few years. I say odd because it always clears up within 24 hours of starting. I mentioned it to his vet a few times, and he said as long as it cleared up within a few days it was probably just a soft-injury and nothing to worry about it.

A couple of weeks ago, he started limping again. Only this time, it didn't go away the next day. So I took him to the vet last week to get it checked. They did some range of motion tests to try to find where it hurt, but Rocky - trying to be a tough dog - refused to flinch. So they gave him some anti-inflammatory medication to take, assuming it was another soft-tissue issue.

After five days of being on the anti-inflammatory, nothing had changed. So I took him back to the vet on Monday. They again tried some range of motion tests; Rocky again refused to flinch. So they took some X-rays. No fractures, but there was a spot near his shoulder that caused the vet some concern. He said he wanted to send the X-rays to Auburn (a top vet school) for a second opinion. I asked him what he was worried it might be and he responded with the dreaded C word.

We got Auburn's report today, and they agreed the spot is a cause for concern. While his vet says there is a chance it's something else, at this point it's most likely bone cancer. Rocky goes next week for a bone biopsy to either confirm or dismiss the cancer. And then we go from there. I'm hoping and praying the biopsy comes back negative, but it's hard staying optimistic.

I'm a grown man and have no problems admitting I've bawled my eyes out the last few days, including now as I write this. He's been the absolute perfect dog since I rescued him more than seven years ago. I'm terrified of life without him, even though I know it's coming sooner or later. Why do dogs have to be so damn awesome?

Good thoughts for Rocky. Auburn is a great place to go but guessing you still live in North Alabama like me, Blue Pearl Vet in Franklin treated my dog for cancer last year and just an hour and a half drive made it much easier for visiting. They were great and luckily my dog Miley came out of everything very well.

We were referred to Veterinary Regional Referral Hospital in Decatur for his bone biopsy, so we're headed there Monday. I'm holding out hope that somehow someway it's not cancer, but if it is I'll have some decisions. I'll definitely ask about Blue Pearl since that would be closer since I'm still in Madison.

Auburn is apparently running some sort of clinical trial for Osteosarcoma. In their report, they said Rocky may be eligible for it. I'll have to check on that too. Unfortunately, if he does have it, amputation of his leg may be the best thing for him.

Welp, the biopsy report came back today and unfortunately it is bone cancer. Both the specialist and his normal vet recommend amputation, so that's likely the path we're headed on.

                              This really ****ing sucks.

I'm taking Rocky back to the surgeon for his amputation tomorrow. It's the best thing for him, but I'm absolutely dreading it.
