I'm 30 miles west of Morehead City which is likely where the eye will come ashore in NC. Time to hold on tight.

      Re: Hurricane Irene

Irene won't be coming here until Sunday. They are predicting the storm will be worse when it hits New England. They haven't asked my part of town to evacuate yet. I'm leaning toward leaving early Sunday morning and heading to my mothers. She lives in the mainland , while I'm right on the coast.

Everyone stay safe over these next couple of days.

Yea, I made the decision earlier to just stick around here for a few days longer. Since it makes more sense to deal with it HERE as opposed to going back and dealing with the worst of Irene up there.

Everyone else be safe and be careful out here this weekend.

          Well this is a first.
1-Everyone getting off of work any time this weekend(FDNY) is required to either be available to stay, or get someone to cover for you. This is all weekend long.
2-Mandatory evacuations of some areas of N.Y.C.(this one is a direct result of the horrific response by N.Y.C. to the late snow storm this year......IMO this is a total CYA move. Whatever though)
3-The Rockaways are being evacuated and the Fire Companies that cover the area may be pulled off the island as well(this one would really surprise me. I can't even fathom such a thing)

Been raining steady for 3 or 4 hours now. Breezy, but nothing severe yet at my house.

                  Re: Hurricane Irene

The fact that Irene looks like she will skirt the coastline more than it looked like yesterday could be unfortunate news for those further north.

The storm isn't quite as strong as projected as far as maximum wind speeds go, but Irene has a huge wind field, so the effects of the storm will be felt over a very large area.

I just saw this on CNN.

What Irene could do to New York. It's really scary.

                      Let's hope this doesn't happen.

The show I watched the other day on the History channel had similar predictions. With New York City being so flat and close to sea level, storm surges would wreak havoc and sever flooding would not be surprising at all.

I had no idea how vulnerable NY was to flooding due to its topography until now.

It's a video from cnn.com explaining how the flooding would be terrible if a category 2 or 3 hurricane hit NY.

EDIT: Can you see it now?
