Ray Liotta's bizarre acting in Goodfellas takes it down a peg for me, plus Casino has Don Rickles. I'd say it's situation where one was the bigger cinematic achievement, but I might prefer the other. I'd take Cop Land over both. Love that movie.

            Re: Uncommon Opinions

I like Cop Land, but it took a few viewings for me to come around on it.

I think "Goodfellas" is Scorsese's only true cinematic masterpiece. I think all of his other films that he is much-lauded for (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Gangs of New York, etc.) are either over-rated or outright trash.

I think he's an original filmmaker and I'm glad he makes movies, but I don't consider too many of his films to be truly great. I honestly think his opinions about other movies and filmmakers are more interesting than his own films.

Walmart is looking to remove cashiers and be self checkout only.

Imo, not sure how common it is, that's mainly a good thing.

However, I'd argue they should have "self checkout representatives". 1 person manning 6 or so checkout stations at a time. So if your store usually has 6 cashiers at a time, you can still have 2 or 3 employees watching over 12 or so self checkout stations.

I prefer self checkout stations over cashiers, depending how many items I have. I feel the bigger items or bigger quantities should still be handled by cashiers. Various items people have probably cheated the system (groceries especially). And bigger items it's harder to manage in that small checkout station, especially when the machines dont let you leave stuff on the checkout area.

Many times I'd rather just go, buy my items and leave. Don't care for the cashier interaction or asking me if I have a points card, want to sign up, make a donation, or needing to specify if I'm paying with debit or credit and if it's a Visa card.

They will. These won't go completely unattended. There are issues all the time at these things, specifically when it comes to payment being declined.

Walmart Grocery/Neighborhood Market will still need cashiers for the sole purpose of selling alcohol, though.

I do self-checkout whenever I can as well.

Biggest issue I've had with these machines is lack of detail about a promotion in the machine. They had a special on an item when you buy 2 or more. I scanned in both items but nothing showed up in terms of discounts. The person there insisted the discount would be applied once I checked out, but I never saw any so I just cancelled everything and went to a cashier.

I've gotten that as well, but when I tell the attending employee at the self-checkout they do an override. Again, they're needed still.

I figure when they're at their own little computer, they're monitoring our actions somehow and accounting for the items on the scale being equal to what we're paying for, or at least closely enough.

I always pick and buy my own broccoli, and wondered if I should next time choose a food item that charges less per pound. I'm not much for stealing, but I'm assuming the machine doesn't know the difference. An employee would, though.

                              I'm sure people do that.

One item is 40 cents a pound. The item you're buying is 2 dollars a pound. Enter diff info and see what happens.

Or if you're buying organic berries and you instead enter that you bought the non organic variety. That's about half the price, but would they pick up on that?

I've never done that, but I'd imagine there's a level of honor in place here, which as we know from the average person, it's a bad thing to do in business.

Main problem with self-checkouts is that when someone has a problem and requires assitance, the poeple who are supposed to provide that assistance sometimes seem less than thrilled about having to do so.
