my local self checkouts are starting to use the scanner as a swiper for drivers licenses, so we don't have to worry about distracted/lazy employees taking 10 minutes to come check the ID after they finish the convo with their friends

which, in a strange twist, contrasts from my greater concern about jobs, people need to get paid to stand around and do nothing, we can't let automation take over

I've never done that, but I'd imagine there's a level of honor in place here, which as we know from the average person, it's a bad thing to do in business.
I'm sure they've calculated the cost of estimated increase in inventory shrinkage (aka "theft") that these self-checkouts provide, and weighed it against the cost of hiring someone to do the checkout, and it's come out firmly on the side of automation. Basically, companies know it's a little less convenient and they'll get ripped off more if they go to automated self-checkout, but as long as it's slightly less expensive than hiring someone to do the job, that's all they need to know.

This, exactly. Also, sometimes no one is around or they're helping someone else....there goes your time savings right there.

Speaking of automating jobs, how long before we stop altogether having drive through speaker boxes and just let people choose from a screen and pick it up that way.

I'm sure some places are like that already, but many still require the person taking your order through a speaker box and not taking your order correctly, or claiming you can't do certain modifications when you can easily do so on the app.

I liked the ending of Far Cry 5 which I just completed. From what I've read online that sounds very uncommon.

Maybe it's me being basic when it comes to getting something like a Publix sub, but speaking of customization I always feel like I'm wasting the persons time when reading out an overly complicated order.

And it sounds so particular too.

"I'd like 2 burgers. First one is lettuce, extra cheese, tomatoes, onions, no pickles, no relish, no ketchup, bbq sauce, toasted bread. Second is lettuce, tomatoes, onion, no cheese, relish, ketchup, and pickles on the side.

Also a small Pepsi with extra ice, a medium ginger ale with no ice. Small fries with ketchup ontop and medium fries with some ketchup packets on the side. I also have this coupon on my phone for a free dessert as well."

"Um sir...this is a Starbucks. Burger place is on the left"

But seriously, it's so much easier from your phone doing what you want, then just going there and being like
"Hi, I'm here to pick up my mobile order. Order #181."

I wouldn't mind this if Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski were "already" retired, but I want to squeeze two years out of both of them in Tampa if possible, so I'd like to see this season happen.

It would've been cooler if there were fans in the seats for it, but whatever.

nice segue for my next uncommon opinion: Brady plays more 4 years and Gronk still retires before Brady. again.

Based on the heat I've gotten on Twitter from complete strangers for saying this, I guess it's an uncommon opinion:

Sitcom laughtracks help make some moments funnier.

Yes, theres times its overused or a moment just isnt actually funny, but these regular mainstream sitcoms like Big Bang Theory, Friends, Seinfeld and others I enjoy and aren't bothered by the laugh tracks.

Some seem to be very bothered by laugh tracks and can't even stand shows that have them.

While you're not wrong, that's exactly why they have the laugh tracks. Those moments otherwise wouldn't be funny, that's part of the point. They're trying to let you know "Hey, this is our attempt at injecting humor."

People can't stand laugh tracks for those few reasons: they don't want to be told when they're supposed to laugh, it likely indicates the material isn't funny enough to stand on its own, and because characters have to "pause" for the laughs to occur those are seconds of filler wasted instead of filling it with substance.

Now, I watched a nice YouTube video on the history of the laugh track and why it has gone the way of the dodo, and it's actually quite interesting. Let me find that link for you.

I don't mind if it's a live audience tbh. I do tend to key in on someones laugh, like the Marine Biologist episode of Seinfeld, this woman has a really loud laugh when Kramer pulls out the golf ball.

the laugh track is just the TV version of typing "lol" online, or adding laughing smileys to a social media post

in the most dumbed down form, it's saying "this is meant to be funny", the same way it exists in other forms today

I think I prefer canned audience laughtrack to forced live audience laughter. There's something bizarrely comforting about the laughtrack on MASH. And let's not forget Scooby Doo.

I think I prefer the live audience sound. When I go back and forth between Boy/Girl Meets World and hear the difference, there is definitely something missing in GMW when it comes to the laughter. It's the natural and sometimes spontaneous laughter effect that came from a live studio audience in Boy Meets World that made everything all the merrier.
