Technically it's illegal to obtain an assault rifle in the USA.

It's not as black and white as people want to thing it is. The "assault weapons" that people are discussing of have no more power or rate of fire than my hunting rifle.

So now we need to ask ourselves, how do you define an "assault weapon" to ban them? The characteristics at that point become completely cosmetic.

Background checks are instituted pretty much everywhere, but they'll only flag people with major background issues. My question in this case is, If this guy had attracted the attention of the FBI as has been reported...how did the purchase not get flagged? Did somebody drop the ball?

I guess my point is, it's a very complicated case.....much more complicated than people believe it is.

The gun wasn't even a AR. It was a Sig Mcx, such shoddy journalism. I've seen multiple articles saying the AR, a mass shooters weapon of choice, and it's not even a AR, Typical.

Semantics. People understand what an Assault Rifle is, most probably haven't heard of the Sig MCX. They're dumbing it down for the average person.

Media seems to have done a better job with facts on this one then other recent events, IMO.

FYI, if we're going to have a discussion on semantics....Assault Rifles are fully automatic weapons and have been under heavy regulation since 1934 and illegal for citizen ownership since 1986.

Have the media been better? I quit watch TV news years ago and just kinda read news on reddit now.

I was reading a Washington Post article and it was full of errors. The media has no clue. An AR is not an assault rifle.

I don't watch TV for news either, but the confusion around the events wasn't as prevalent as the Paris attack or Brussels. The one piece that was reported I can recall as being false now is that it was 20 people killed. Of course, it went up to 49 victims and the shooter.

Might be because it was on US soil instead of overseas and happened when most people were sleeping.

Federal prosecutors have convened a grand jury to investigate the wife of the Orlando nightclub shooter, seeking to charge her as an accessory to 49 counts of murder and 53 counts of attempted murder as well as with failure to notify law enforcement about the pending terrorist attack and lying to federal agents, a federal law enforcement source confirmed Tuesday to FoxNews.com.

BTW Kudos to Anderson Cooper and CNN for not mentioning the shooter's name or showing his picture at all last night during their coverage. I know one of the gripes people have about these mass shootings is that the media glorifies these people.

Well...That certainly wasn't the case last night and i'm sure the policy will stay in place where applicable.

That is a first, I remember when Time magazine had the Columbine Shooters on a cover, and of course the Boston Marathon Bomber on Rolling Stone. Made me sick. That's what they wanted.

For all the talk about "lone wolf" blah blah, he sure wasn't that alone. His wife was scouting targets with him including Disney stuff around and even drove him to the club on one occasion. She knew and didn't say anything. Oh but she "tried to talk him out of it," lol. My ***.

I'm going to Disney World this fall, and I really hope they step up security. I don't care if I have to get licked up and down by a bomb sniffing dog.

I want to go there to have fun, not get blown up.

To me the more details that come out the less it sounds like ISIS was involved. He did support them and they may have inspired him, but I don't think they had anything to do with this guy or the planning of the attack. Which honestly doesn't really make the situation any better because how do you stop people who just suddenly become sick in the head and concoct and carry out massacres like this.

                            Re: Terrorism in Orlando

Well if it's not "ISIS directly" and it's just someone "inspired" by them, then we should take a long hard look at what exactly is drawing these people to such an ideology and carrying out terrorist attacks.

I don't care whether it was an "official ISIS attack" or not. It doesn't really matter. They've told their followers to carry out attacks as they see fit and other groups do the same. And they have been. These are your "official ISIS attacks" anyway. That's why you have some ******* in France killing a cop and torturing his wife. That's why you have some guy in a Walmart in Amarillo today taking two hostages before being killed by SWAT. What's the distinction? That al-Baghdadi or Zawahiri didn't come themselves? What do people think is happening? I don't understand.

There really is no answer. We're just going to have to live with this. This is the new world. There isn't anything that can be done to stop this. Not when this ideology has spread like cancer across our country and across the world. As you see the events that have unfolded in the US, Canada, France, Belgium, Denmark, Australia, and various other locations throughout the world, it's not confined to one region of the world anymore.

There's alot that can be done, if our superiors can get their head out of their ***.

One of biggest strengths Isis has is it's reach on the web. Pro Isis forums. Message boards, newspapers. It's all in plain sight.

They aren't hiding anything, Omar is already on their front pages and it's being celebrated. Shut it down.

Give power to shut all this garbage down, that's not free speech. It's just garbage. Hate speech filled with intent to evil.

If you pledge any allegiance to thus group, support them in any way, it should be illegal and their will be consequences.

There has to me a massive crackdown on this kind if stuff, no more messing around. Because this should not be the norm in this country or anywhere else. There's no reason this should happen on the regular here. Absolutely no excuse for it.

I believe Isis is a ticking time bomb, their really going to hit us hard, and hell is gonna reign down on them. You can't simply piss off everyone in the world, and exist for very long.

The war on terror is probably never going to end. You can kill all of ISIS which is doubtful but another group will just pop up.
